Iran Hairstyles: Country Cracks Down On Men's 'Dos

First Posted: 07/06/10 11:37 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:00 PM ET

Iran is cracking down on expressive hairstyles...men's hairstyles, that is. The Daily Mail reports that the country's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance is creating a catalog of acceptable hairdos for this month's Modesty and Veil Festival.

Among the new regulations, no long hair or ponytails, no mandatory beard and a bit of gel is okay. Those with illegal 'dos are taken to police stations where they are "unceremoniously and inexpertly shorn," according to the Mail.

Imadinnerjacket wears stubble on his face and it's supposedly considered pious. The really religious don't cut their hair at all.
It must be tough being a bum in Iran, all the shaving and grooming to look despicable probably takes all the fun out it.

Didn't everyone on this board have a Dad who would drag them into
the Barber Shop and shear them good when only one hair touched their ears?

My private high school allowed zero facial hair -- AND Bikini Waxes-(just kidding:)
06:21 AM on 07/08/2010
No my dad is awesome. He didnt care about my hairstyle as long as my hair was clean

Thus the demonization continues - will people here never learn?

It is a stupid rule. There is nothing in Islam about the hairstyles of men and women. It is an excuse to control and oppress people especially the unemployed educated young male and female. It may be noted that Iran has one of the highest percentage of unemployed young male and female graduates.

Agreed! Idiocy~

The most misleading part about this is that Ahmadinejad et. al., in a subtle and non-public way, have actually loosened the morality apparatus AND EVEN SPOKEN OUT ABOUT IT (as Haaretz reports from a June 20 TV interview): ""We consider it an insult when a man and a woman are walking in the street and are asked about their relationship. Nobody has a right to do that." Yes, he has separated himself from the very function of the revolutionary apparatus that dictates what hair cuts are appropriate etc.

So, this is just false news and intended to emphasize an OLD Iranian mistake in domestic policy. It's not currently a huge issue as this article makes it out to be. LIke I said, they've tried to gain some ground with reformists as of late, so the morality police DO NOT REALLY bother people nearly as much as they used to. AP = All Propaganda, once again. HP, find a new news source -- this ones become a one-trick pony.

Sorry, but the so-called mostly uneducated thugs known as the morality police do make life miserable for the people especially the young and educated.

And here I thought when they ransacked students dormatories and arrested all the students in secret raids that counted as "bothering people" - but what do I know, I don't speak farsi. For the record you can't critique Israel unless you speak Hebrew
