This was a weird and telling statement by Bolden. Now the White House is backtracking from the story, no doubt because of the reaction by people HERE in America!

Bolden is nothing but a Human Shield for Obama's iananity...an honest and honorable man, probbly the best qualified ever to hold his post, ordered by the White House to march across a nice green field to trip landmines and draw sniper fire...
And he is taking fire from all sides, including friendly fire (White House) and fire from those(otherwise intelligent conservatives; hugh Fitzgerald for one) who should see him for the "civilian" he is in their political"war" against all that is Obama.
today I took Hugh to task for his rabid assault on Bolden in what should have been an attack on Obama and HIS policies.

Well, thanks to the muslim mathematician, Al-Khwarizmi , who invented algebra in the year 820. It probably was as useless then as it is now.

Obama sends Hilary Clinton to South America to announce that Obama will sue the state of AZ over their illegal immigrant law.
Obama sends Charles Bolden to Al Jazeera to announce the Obama has changed the mission of NASA.
WTF??

Obama announces : The primary mission of NASA: making Muslims feel good about themselves...because NASA really doesn't have anything else to do.

Or maybe these people just made what they thought was a small sop to local prejudices to suck up, and it was spun to be "administration policy"! Both sides do it, stinks either way.
I go after Hugh Fitzgerald of Jihad Watch today for that

When I first heard of this story yesterday, I did several Web searches to find its source. At the time my search yielded two apparently right-wing-leaning blogs and a seemingly right-wing think tank. All had the same story, word-for-word. Now, it has popped up on Fox News in similar format with little added to it. Has anyone asked the administration about it? Has anyone asked the Arabs? Has anyone else transcribed the radio broadcast? Did anyone else hear it?

I think there has been a lot of reaction to something that may or may not be a story.

Here is the original interview - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e857ZcuIfnI

And they did ask the administration about it - They said that Bolden was talking about outreach, not the entire NASA mission

And you are right - this is a lot of reaction about something that really isn't a story

Bueller? Bueller?? in the interview you linkied to, the head of NASA said that before Obama chose him, Obama made it clear to him that the primary mission of NASA is to reach out to Muslims and make them feel better.

From VIPER-HP

As a former NASA subcontractor on Shuttle and Space Station for years... this is nothing new.. The Shuttle was suppose to cost 30 million to launch... lots of laughter.. it was a known lie to promote a cheaper design, so that money could also be spent to develop a space station during that same time frame that was never built. All the reasons for the space station were fabricated as it was the reason for the Shuttle... How is that gravity free research paying off? And the Space station was suppose to have been completed more than a decade ago at a fraction of the budget.

As much of a waste as I think NASA is and we are a country that needs to start making Computers, microwaves and flat screens more than we need to go to MARs. I say get out of IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN and close half of those 700 foreign bases, cut the defense budget in half (350 Billion for fighters that cant fight???) and I'm more than willing to waste a little money on NASA... Heck double or even triple its budget, NASA will at least find an acorn once in a while!

And by the way if you spent a few months at Johnson Space Center watching how contracts are awarded and bid, you would never complain again about the Soc Sec Administration or Food stamp programs. White collar welfare is not pretty.

Not suprising (about Johnson Space Center and the fake budgets).

Suprising (former space subcontractor thinking NASA is mostly a waste).

I love space and can't believe we don't consider it to be much more important at this time. It is one of the few areas we could have maintained superiority over other countries, but alas, now even Japan has shamed us with their landing on a comet and bringing back samples.

There is a way to make NASA much better - have it focus on industry creation, rather than as a jobs/pork program. Things like Obama's proposed Commercial Crew program

The white sands test facility is in Las Cruces, New Mexico not Texas. (look at the map) The Marshall Space Flight Center is in Alabama not Tennessee. (look at the NASA map). They're pointing closer to the Oak Ridge National Lab (ornl.gov) which is actually in Tennessee.

http://fellowships.hq.nasa.gov/gsrp/centers/

It's an amazing coincidence that so many NASA (brilliant scientists and engineers and brilliant defense contractors) in southern states, and we still lead the nation in high school drop outs, teen pregnancies, low educational achievement and the list goes on and on. There are several reasons for this. These centers are self serving and only benefit a handful of people of a certain skin color. And NASA and their lobbyist ties to military defense contractors are very vigilant to make sure things stay this way.

Actually
No, its not that surprising, since LBJ was president when they were setting them up. He saw it as part of the way to revitalize the south.

Also, Obama is trying to move them away from being just about defense contractors. But there are more than a few people who don't like it

Yes, and Governor Perry had the audacity to wonder why the Johnson Space Center was in jeopardy of losing funds about three months after his appointees devalued evolution and required a section on intelligent design as another "theory" in the state's science curriculums.

The biggest task in my view is this agency administrator, must go back and repair what the previous fraudulent administrators, Sean O' Keefe and Griffin bent over backwards to lay to waste on behalf of GWB and numerous university scientists. Yes, NASA was deeply politicized in the previous administration.

Are they going to launch an end to the Israeli/Palistnian conflict rocket? Are they going to orbit a craft to end the wars occupation and oppression of others by invading forces. How about a mission to the planet 'leave us alone"?

Go back to Sarah Palin. At least she shreeks when she lies.

You may have to trim down your wish list otherwise they may ask for billions in funding to accomplish the mission. Don't forget cost overruns because certain people in high places (military defense contractors) need to live high on the hog.

The day they landed a spaceman on the moon there was a war going on just north of us in the South Asian peninsula then, and daily we saw on the TV the horrible things people could do to each other.

My mother said...not impressed with the pictures she could hardly see..."they can spend money to put a spaceman on the moon, but cant spend time sitting down to end this war.

outreach should not be limited to a single religion and Mr. Bolden specifically stated that outreach to the Muslim religion should be a priority. This is laughable!

So, this article has less than 100 posts so far but if you mention that Sarah Palin got a new hairdo on HP and you will see like 10,000 posts. Too funny.
10:42 PM on 07/07/2010
It just shows the mentality of the Liberals who habitually read HP.

Very few are concerned with dismantling of American institutions (change you can believe in!) but as you said, go absolutely deranged with anything Palin. Their hatred has made them irrational, illogical and devoid of critical thinking.

So glad to see that there are still a few concerned rational people who cannot believe what is happening to NASA under Obama. I bet this was not the change that you thought you were getting!

Obama isn't dismantling NASA. And no, it isn't just focused on outreach to Muslim nations. The fact that Obama eliminating Constellation, which was killing NASA, is proof

I think Palin was a big part of why McCain lost. She has no ideas beyond a few sound bites. But, this story is ridiculous. The idea that the head of NASA would think his "foremost" duty is to make Muslims "feel good" about themselves is beyond absurd. And why Muslims in particular?
