LeBron James Announcement Slated For ESPN Special On Thursday

TOM WITHERS   07/ 6/10 11:26 PM ET   AP

Lebron James Announcement

AKRON, Ohio — LeBron James' dramatic and historic free agency will have a fitting conclusion – on TV.

ESPN reported Tuesday night that James will announce his future NBA plans during a one-hour special on its network at 9 p.m. Thursday. ESPN's Chris Broussard said James' "representatives" contacted the network and asked for the unusual arrangement.

It is not known which team James will join or where the announcement will take place.

The two-time MVP and marquee name in a stellar free-agent class also featuring Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, recently met with six teams – the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets.

Both James' publicist Keith Estabrook and ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz declined comment to The Associated Press.

Citing anonymous "independent sources," Broussard reported James' group requested they be allowed to sell sponsorship for the special with proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

James' agent Leon Rose and business manager Maverick Carter did not return phone calls and e-mails from the AP seeking comment.

Earlier, all his fans got was a tweet out of James.

With the Summer of LeBron trudging along, James opened a Twitter account and posted his first message on the social networking site. Although he provided no information about his future plans, he offered something as the NBA awaits the decision on where he'll play next.

"Hello World, the Real King James is in the Building," said the tweet from KingJames, which by 11 p.m. EDT had more than 187,000 followers.

After arriving for the second day of his skills academy on Tuesday four hours later than expected, James spent six hours at Rhodes Arena in meetings and playing ball with several Cavaliers teammates against high school campers before heading home. He didn't speak to reporters before pulling away in his customized Dodge pickup.

"That's the question," Cavs teammate Daniel Gibson said when asked what he thinks James will do. "I don't know. I'm here with the hanging-out, having-fun LeBron. I'm not out here with the business LeBron."

Estabrook confirmed the superstar joined Twitter, a place where Wade and Bosh often post details about their public lives off the floor.

In the past, James poked fun at athletes for giving details of their daily routines on Twitter and Facebook, but at the prodding of New Orleans guard Chris Paul, his U.S. Olympic teammate and closest friend in the league, the two-time MVP decided it was time to join the fun.

Now, if he would only announce which team he's going to.

James arrived at his Nike-sponsored skills academy at the University of Akron at 3:15 p.m. for the second day of the camp hosting many of the nation's top high school and college stars.

James did not speak to reporters before walking into Rhodes Arena with former Cavs teammate Damon Jones. James wasn't dressed for a workout, and was not visible when organizers cleared the media from the school's arena at roughly 4 p.m.

James' plans still are a closely guarded secret. Until his announcement, other teams are positioning themselves to make a run at the 6-foot-8, 260-pound All-Star – or Bosh or Wade, or maybe a combination.

There have been various reports that Toronto was working on a sign-and-trade deal with Cleveland for Bosh, and that James is trying to convince him to join the Cavaliers.

However, a person familiar with the talks said the Cavs have spoken to the Raptors and several other teams but that no players have been discussed and nothing is close to being finalized. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations.

Cleveland can offer James a maximum-length deal worth $30 million more than any other team. But if they re-sign him, the Cavs would have no more money to sign a player of Bosh's stature unless they open room under the salary cap. Teams can not sign players before Thursday, one day after the new salary-cap figure is announced.

Miami and Chicago could be interested in making a similar deal with the Raptors.

With all this swirling around him, James seemed as cool as ever when he arrived for his camp as outside temperatures hit 94 degrees.

Dressed in a white Nike T-shirt and orange shorts, he entered the building just as the college players were finishing their second session of the day. He shook a few hands and plopped down on a sideline table before moving to a courtside chair. Shortly after he arrived, his two young sons, LeBron Jr. and Bryce, came in with former high school teammates Dru Joyce III and Romeo Travis.

As their dad was in meetings with Nike executives, the two boys wrestled for the basketball and took shots on the floor.

Later, one of James' bodyguards brought in a bag believed to contain the star's workout gear, and Gibson arrived looking as if he was ready to play some ball. And that's exactly what he did, teaming with James and Cavaliers Jamario Moon, Jawad Williams and Christian Eyenga in some full-court scrimmages against high school players.

The prep stars won the first game against the pros.

While James is the star attraction in this summer's stacked class of free agents, other players have either stayed home or found a new one. On Monday, Amare Stoudemire agreed to a five-year deal with the New York Knicks and said he would continue to recruit James to join him.

I just saw the commercial for a Signature Lebron James iPhone 4. Its looks real nice and will be very popular despite the fact it only vibrates and has NO RINGS.

This is actually quite funny. I am quite certain the hour is going to be taken up with an indepth analysis of the "new" team and how they will structure players around him. It reminds me of Tiger Woods and the man love ESPN has for him. They must know where he's going or they are spending tons of money developing a 45 minute segment for each one of the teams he might go to. I'd love to see those outtakes but I'm guessing they'll get burned out behind the building afterward. My only joy will come is if Lebron throws them all for a loop and signs with someone like the Timberwolves. Wouldn't that make for a mad scramble? Of course being a small market team the Wolves could have Lebron and the last two years of basketball players from the U of MN. I'd say grads but we all know the U of MN doesn't graduate its players, they merely run out of eligibility. Go Wolves, make my summer!

I thought when he was just a talented poor basketball player - he wanted nothing but to play in Cleveland and give as much as he could to the charities? Ohio was his life and he wanted to stay there.

Oh well - money changes people. We'll hear about a scandal in Miami pretty soon...

Besides the love of the fans, the organization really can't give him what he needs to achieve what he needs to in his career. I'm sure he will still maintain his image in the state, but he needs to do what's best for him professionally too. I'd love for him to stay, and I hope the rumours aren't true, but I see his argument. We're talking about a potential reimagining of the Celtics and Lakers in the 80's. If Carmelo goes to Chicago next season, man. Chi-Cavs Eastern against the Lakers.

A swing and a miss at trying to demonize Lebron for wanting to maximize he global value in a way that probably cant be done in Cleveland.

People often pursue bigger and better things while maintaining their commitments in the city they left. Case in point McNabb has several charities and camps in Philly that he still runs.

What type of scandal in Miami are you waiting on? This seems like one of those " I know he's up to no good we just havent caught him yet" type things. You keep an eagle eye on him for us and tell us when he slips up OK?

You guys do realize that you're all offended by a TV production right? I mean the guys spends more time and money on charity than most athletes or entertainers, yet you all hate him because he's smart enough to promote himself and be charitable simultaneously. LOL What a bunch of cynical jealous losers. You should be happy for the guy and the Boys and Girls Club. How much do you give? What selfless charity do you do on a regular basis?

Its much harder to say I'm wrong about this guy. Yeah he's putting on a spectacle right now but everything he's done outside the NBA points to him being a stand up guy and a great role model.

Other athletes would pay millions to a PR firm to generate this much interest. Instead Lebron and his friends do it all themselves.

OH well hate on haters. The kid will probably reach his billion whether you hate him or not. He might even win a championship in the process.

. Lebron grew up with nothing, dreamed of providing for his family and friends and is doing so. He plays a game for a living. He works hard and is highly compensated. This allows him an those associated with him to live well and give back in major ways. I'm not seeing to many negative points here.I hope he keeps doing what he's doing. It's obviously working.

While I think this whole spectacle is absurd it's not as absurd as the backlash LeBron's getting. Geez Louise, the guy's having a Peter Brady "party celebrating me"...yeah, it's a little tacky, but he's not committing crimes, for gosh's sake.

Brett Favre must be kicking himself. I bet he wishes he thought of doing hour long ESPN specials announcing whether he's going to play or not.

He wants a championship.

Either Boston or Orlando.

His new nickname will be "LeRaven," because he feels like he has to leave Cleveland to win a ring.

Chicago and Miami make the most sense for a title pursuit.

But....

The LeBron brand will take a hit if he goes to Dwayne Wade's team, and he will always be in Jordan's shadow in Chicago. But at least in Chicago, it will be HIS team.

My advice is to sign a 3 year deal and go to South Beach. This way he can keep NY and Carmelo on the radar.

Melo should go to Chi town man. Melo, Rose and Noah is way better than Bron, Wade and Bosh. Better mix, more diverse skills, better balance, more longevity. Plus they could use Boozer for a sign-and-trade.

That sounds good...if the money fits.

You can put Noah at center, Melo at the 3 and keep Boozer at PF. Melo needs to let go of that NYC fantasy.

Miami, if they can afford him. Because while Florida doesn't have an income tax, New York's personal income tax is 8.97 percent and the rate in New York City is 12.62 percent (include the state income tax). And now, New York politicians want to raise the rate even further.

Miami will not affect his endorsements negatively and he is a laid back character, at least the image he has cultivated, and that will be enhanced by a city like Miami.

Cleveland should have seen the writing on the wall this season. Towards the end of this past season the guy didn’t care enough to put on an uniform and play 2 quarters.

MJ would never do that to Chicago. He must really laugh at Lebron and ESPN.

I agree, he seemed to quit in that game 7 with the Celts. I don't know about before that this season; he's allowed to have bad games too. I wonder about the West rumours. Honestly, the guy carries his team and his team does him like that?
07:40 PM on 07/08/2010
Really? It's all speculation ... you don't think MJ would've left Bulls if he didn't win in 91 after what 7 seasons? Or Kobe left Lakers if he didn't win after Shaq left... ? Remember who the coaches are... Jackson ... Jackson > Brown
