Kenny G To Prince: Internet Is Not Dead

CARMEN CASTRO   07/ 8/10 08:59 AM ET   AP

Kenny G Prince Internet

NEW YORK — Kenny G isn't bowing down to Prince.

The saxophonist candidly joked in response to a recent interview in which Prince said the Internet is completely over.

Kenny G says if the Internet is dead "then I must be dead, too, 'cause I use it all the time." He adds with a laugh: "Maybe I've got a sixth sense, and I only see dead people. I don't know."

The 54-year-old admits the majority of his audience may not be as "Internet and download savvy" like fans of singer Rihanna, but he knows he must use the outlet to promote his music.

Prince refuses to use digital platforms to distribute his music. But Kenny G says he will do what it takes to stay connected, especially since he just released a new album, the R&B-flavored "Heart & Soul."

This might be the first time ever that I find a reason to like Kenny G.

Prince on the other hand has become a reclusive freak and John "Cougar" Melloncamp is a whiny has-been who thinks the internet is evil. Those two can fade into obscurity fast enough.

Prince may be off the wall a times, but his artistic contribution is unassailable. Kenny G is one of the worst excuses for a musician I've ever come across. I expect his audience isn't, as he says, internet savvy. They're not very musically aware either.

And, BTW, there are many other musicians who agree with me on this. We can start with Pat Metheny, who has publicly excoriated Kenny G for his lack of musicality and artistic integrity.

Mr. Prince said, "I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else [digitally]. They won't pay me an advance for it, and then they get angry when they can't get it....All these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you." Sound about right. There is a reason all the music stores are gone and concert ticket prices are too high. Bands can't make a living on "free music" and have to charge high prices for concerts. When was the last time there was a really big selling CD on the market? Ten years ago and it was by the Beatles. Proof is in the pudding.

Do we really need two has-beens to gauge the relevance of the internet?

Stupid article. Where's the Prince quote, HP? This is just an opportunity for Kenny to plug his album.

If Kenny G schools you, then you're the one who's over.

In other news, Orion, Boxcar Willie, and Vanilla Ice have sided with Prince, while Mungo Jerry, Bell Biv Devoe, and the remaining members of the Bee Gees have embraced Kenny G's love of cyber-marketing. Stay tuned for updates as they occur...

Prince is just having a temper tantrum due to record companies not being reliable and internet users swapping his music. He just needs to adjust his business model so he can make money and put his stuff out there. Pay per song, pay what you can afford, etc.

Price, baby, money don't matter, remember? You're an artist, not a banker. Don't forget that.

I was shocked that Prince would say something so short-sighted...Kenny G gets it, I think I will go and buy his new album instead....maybe...

But then you might actually subject yourself to listening to it, which could permanently damage your faculty for musical appreciation.
