Rand Paul Says Obama Jabs Could Harm Oil Spill Clean-Up, Doesn't Want BP 'To Go Out Of Business'

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul said Thursday that harsh criticism of BP by President Barack Obama's administration could contribute to the oil giant's demise and harm its ability to pay for cleanup of the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The comments came in response to blistering criticism by Democratic opponent Jack Conway at their first appearance together. Conway blasted Paul for saying in late May that Obama's stance toward BP was un-American and anti-business. Those and other comments by Paul led to a backlash at the time that caused the Republican to retreat from the national scene for a couple of weeks.

Paul said Thursday that BP should pay for the Gulf cleanup, but that Obama administration's sharp rhetoric could help imperil the company.

"I don't want them to go out of business when they can't pay for the mess, and that's what that kind of rhetoric could do," he said. "I want BP to be in business so it can afford to pay for the mess."

BP said this week it has spent $3.12 billion so far in response to the spill, including attempting to contain oil, paying claims and reimbursing the U.S. and local governments. By comparison, BP posted $17 billion in profit from its vast operations around the globe last year.

Conway, who has run a low-key campaign so far, came out blasting Paul for the past comments on BP and for expressing misgivings about applying a portion of the Civil Rights Act to private businesses.

"Accountability is not going on national TV and saying that it's un-American to go after British Petroleum," said Conway, the state's attorney general. "Accountability is not having a world view where you think the government basically should never touch business whatsoever."

Paul fired back by linking Conway to Obama on health care and environmental issues while speaking to a large gathering of county officials at a Louisville hotel. The opponents are seeking to replace Republican Sen. Jim Bunning, who is retiring.

Paul, a Bowling Green eye doctor who promotes himself as a political outsider, said he would be willing to hold up Senate proceedings with a filibuster to try to prod other senators into taking up a balanced budget amendment.

"If I am elected, I will ... force a vote on the balanced budget amendment, and I will, if necessary, filibuster to be heard on the issue," he said. "Our country needs it, and someone's going to have to stand up."

Afterward, Paul said in an interview that he would prefer pushing the balanced budget proposal through the normal Senate process, but said there are times when a filibuster is justified.

"I think the deficit ... is such an enormous problem that it might warrant bringing things to a halt and having a discussion about it for a few days," he said.

Paul didn't offer any specifics about how to erase the nation's mushrooming deficit. He said each federal program should be reviewed to determine if it can be cut, eliminated or privatized.

Conway campaign spokeswoman Allison Haley later called Paul's support for a balanced budget amendment "empty rhetoric" unless the Republican backs it up with specifics on how to eliminate the deficit.

If Paul's serious about the balanced budget thing, the answer there is pretty straightforward, cut ALL federal programs by 10%, across-the-board. If they don't fire people, then they can start cutting paychecks. Somehow, our government got in the habit of habitually overrunning the budget, so put it right by figuring out the concrete steps of reversing the situation. Filibustering is nice, but the truth is  Read More...

Coastal Sheriffs have the right to issue arrest warrants for British Petroleum officials and should do so ! Why the coastal Sheriffs have not done so thus far is anyone's guess.

Wow, I can't believe how many people on here are pro Rand Paul. Read the Post, watch what has happened to the wildlife. You all should be shamed of yourselves for talking about saving BP. To Jigg 5, those people live in Gulf because it is their home. To the rest, Rand is a racist, self promoting,TWIT!

A business that could be destroyed merely by "that kind of rhetoric" is probably a business that the free market SHOULD take out. Many people think *Ron* Paul's libertarian ideals are merely a veneer for racism, and I won't argue with anybody about that one way or the other. You're entitled to your opinion of the guy. But at least Ron knows how to stay true to laissez-faire economics. Junior there just exposed himself as a craven corporatist. No room for interpretation there.

It's embarrassing how many people are so uninformed of his true stance on the issues. Maybe you should read more than the sound bites?

Oh, poor BP. If those people on the Gulf don't want oil in their water, why do they live there?

Who cares if BP goes out of business? Who cares if no other oil company ever drills in the gulf again? Who cares if oil producers move out of US waters? Americans can afford to pay much more at the gas pump than they are now. Let them all move out or go out of business we americans need more exercise and riding bikes would be much better for them. Who cares about the oil companies at all?

Shouldnt he be worried that BPs Gross Negligence has put alot of citizens out of business?. Shouldnt he be worried that BP has removed alot of people from the group of tax payers and forced them to be tax reciepients? I think Mr Rand has his priorities wrong.

Rand, the next time you see good old Tony from BP, why don't you just rush him and give him that great big French Kiss on the Mouth that you obviously are dying to plant on him! BP broke the rules, didn't have a contingency plan for disaster...COST CAUSER PAYS!

It is as if they think NO voter is listening to or understanding what they are saying. Their craziness would be somewhat comforting but for the incompetence of their opponents and the nagging feeling that, for a majority of actual voters, they might be right.

I find things stuck to the bottom of my shoe that I'd rather eat than listen to this guy and his crazy views. Yeah, we know who's funding his career and what he really cares about. He and Sharon Angle should get dumped on an island far, far away.

Paul says Obama's stance against BP is "un-American and anti-business". This is not an American company. This is a foreign company, doing business here to make a profit from our resources. To blame a foreign company for destroying the fishing industry in the Gulf, and it is destroyed, it will be DECADES before it will start, start to recover. And lets not forget the tourist industry. How many business's will go under without tourist coming to the beaches?

What is un-American is Paul supporting a foreign company over American small business.
