From the "Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover" department: An analysis by the Southern Regional Education board found that the starting annual salary for teachers in Alabama, $36,144, is the highest in the nation.

Despite this distinction, Alabama ranks below the regional and national averages for average pay among all teachers.

From the Dothan Eagle:

Average beginning pay for teachers in the SREB states topped national averages for the first time in 2007, meaning starting teachers in this region, on average, make more money than their counterparts nationwide.

The national average for teacher salary is $54,319 per year.
