Yes, how about Luis Alberto Urrea? Finalist for a Pulitzer, Edgar Award winner, American Book Award, New York Times notable book mention, Lannan Literary Award, Kiriyama Prize and others. Surely he is worth a mention in this article?

I loved Smith's "White Teeth". I'd also add Wole Soyinka, one of my favourite authors, who's at the U of Nevada.

I took classes with William Gass, Howard Nameroff and Carlos Fuentes at Washington University in St. Louis.

Glorious teachers, all.

I'm more curious about how many of these famous authors actually do the majority of teaching for their courses. I know that some celebrity profs rely on TAs to do the bulk of the teaching and they only show up once or twice during the semester.

My class with Michael Cunningham, along with all the other courses he taught at Yale, was a 15-person seminar. No TA.

I'm surprised that Salmon Rushdie is even still ALIVE, much less teaching-- what with the ongoing fatwa on his head....
03:54 PM on 07/20/2010
The fatwa was lifted in 1998.

Well, I haven't seen him mentioned in the comments yet, so I'll put in a plug for Joe Haldeman. He was a student at the Iowa Writer's Workshop, then also taught at U of I for a while. Currently he teaches at MIT.

If you're not into science fiction, you probably wouldn't recognize the name. But he's highly respected in the field, having won several Hugo and Nebula awards.
