Why Didn't I Think Of That? 14 Obvious Inventions You Could Have Easily Thought Of (PICTURES)

First Posted: 7/12/10   Updated: 5/25/11

You ever see a new product and immediately think "I could have thought of that?" and then repeatedly kick yourself for the rest of the day for not being a gazillionaire? Yes yes, we've all been there. And we're right. We could have been gazillionaires. All of us. Yet for some reason we didn't patent our "pizza scissors" or "remote control bottle opener." Like fools! Anyway, the people behind these products have. And now they're just rubbing it in our faces while we're not sleeping on a pile of money.

When i was 6 i thought of picture frames that showed a slideshow. A year or two ago, when I was at staples, "D'oh!"

I sketch out the idea for noise cancelling headphones while I was on generator duty in the Navy. Never followed up on it. Years later when I saw that Bose had built them I kicked the poo out of myself.

My Monte Carlo had these swivel seats back in the 70's - I think they were called captains chairs. Nothing new about this one.

Those are all useless gimmicks.

If they are "obvious" they are technically not "inventions."

I recall that Chrysler first offered swivel bucket seats in their cars in the late 1950's, I think, in the Chrysler letter-series 300 coupes. Other automakers offered swivel options for bucket seats as well, especially in vans. The bendable bike that locks onto itself when bent around a pole sounds like a good idea as well, but bikes do withstand a lot of abuse, so I wonder how the frame would hold up in the long run. Already there are two-piece bikes that bolt together in the middle of the frame, so it can be carried in the trunk of a car, or locked together on a pole. The gum package, with the removable wrappers and used-gum storage area sounds like a good idea as well. The Retrovision glasses look almost like the old Ray Ban Wayfarers, or the Real D 3-D glasses issued by the movie theaters. The Pizza Scissors look like a good idea as well-cutting a hot-out-of-the-oven pizza can be hard. The Nintendo harmonicas are a good way to recycle first-generation Nintendo game cartridges.

My sister had a '73 Monte Carlo that had swivel chairs. It was next to impossible to get out of the car without swiveling the chairs, but there wasn't enough room to turn both the driver's and passenger's chairs at the same time. So, one person had to get out, turn the chair back around, then wait for the other person. When it came time to get back in, the person whose chair was facing forward had to stick themselves half into the car (after the other person had gotten in, of course) in order to release the swivel mechanism. It was a horrible execution of what might appear to be a good idea. I think they were only offered the one year. They might have worked better on a wider car, but the '73 Monte Carlo was a big car by today's standard.

Nah, they did it for 4 years across the GM A Body Platform (73-77) I have a 75 Cutlass with them. I don't seem to have a problem with them either.

It is amaing that people can create such useless junk and convince other to spend their money on it. This stuff will head straight to Goodwill after 5 minutes of use.

I wish someone would create a sunscreen that was a visible colour when first applied but turned invisible after a couple of minutes - I'm tired of weird sunburn patterns because I missed bits when applying sunscreen!

Swivel bucket seats for drivers are more than a half-century old. Chrysler had them in the 1950s and 1960s; Ford had them by the 1960s; and GM was still offering them in the 1970s.

I wish someone would invent a car horn that could be switched on to friendly "toot" thereby alerting the car in front of me that the light has changed or back to a "look out!" blast.
