Coco Rocha, Size 4 Model, Says Being Sidelined For Weight Gain 'Hurt'

First Posted: 07/13/2010 1:03 pm Updated: 05/25/2011 5:05 pm

Model Coco Rocha recently talked to FASHION Magazine and she had some interesting things to say about the offers she's turned down:

She has said "no" to more things than most of her peers have said "yes" to, from Dancing With the Stars ("not a good career move, probably") to shooting with Terry Richardson ("I've shot with him, but I didn't feel comfortable and I won't do it again").

Richardson, if you remember, has been called degrading to women and accused of "waggling" his privates in front of models.

Rocha also talked about how she felt when she was sidelined by the modeling industry for being a size 4:

"It hurt at the time. But now I say, 'You can't dance with everybody. Someone else will come along.'"

I've never heard of her but she is very pretty.

My first reaction is to think she is crazy for speaking out about being too fat, look at her, if anything she is much prettier than most models because you are not distracted by her bones. But, this is the reality of the modeling industry. Today, it is not like back in the 80s and 90s supermodel heyday where models were curvy and amazonian. Today the ideal is the "clothes hanger" that doesn't distract from clothing. Hopefully with the recent press around plus size models, Coco Rocha and the increased popularity of "average" sized people on TV, we are heading into another era of slightly larger, healthier looking models.

If, and only if the hanger can walk.

size 4 = 12 year old boy's body. Nothing womanly there.

who wants "womanly?"

straight men, that's why you are confused.

um... not true at all. I'm a size 3 to 4 and my body looks nothing like a 12 yr old boy's. I've got breasts, curves, and a booty.

Don't make a generalization that's not true.

In this same section there's a story about heavier-than-a-size-4 women doing a lingerie shoot. The comments on that thread were disturbing. People popping off to strangers things they'd never have the balls to say to a woman's face. I think HP would do well by dispensing with the stories on women's weight (PS - where're the stories about Jack Nicholson, Vince Vaughn, etc. and their girth?), and how they're embraced or not by society. I think we're all pretty well versed in diet, exercise and self-esteem as the keys to health. And if not, I highly doubt a blog is the place to bone up on the issue. I'll get off my stool now.

Huffpo should go on a diet and spend an entire week without publishing stories about women's weight.

I used to be a size 3. It is frightening to look back and see how bony I actually was. And she's being shunned for being a size FOUR?? Bravo to Coco for being an oh so spunky girl with a good head on her shoulders! Love the attitude in her pictures!

Ms. Rocha has done some body image activism, but after I asked her a question about height, she basically implied that I was crazy (I even made a video about this on YouTube). Totally weird, huh?

Bravo to Coco Rocha for not working with a photographer who would degrade her. That takes some guts to turn down a job - and a paycheck - for your dignity and self-respect.
