'Doomsday' Seed Vault: Senator Benjamin Cardin Leads Bipartisan Trip To Hand Deliver North American Chili Peppers To Remote Arctic Facility

Global Seed Vault

As an historic climate bill is stalled in the Senate, some United States legislators have decided to reach across party lines and lead a bipartisan effort to address climate change in their own way.

Seven congressmen, led by Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), spent their 4th of July on a long trip to the arctic, where they hand delivered seeds, including those of unique North American chilies, to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault located on a remote Norwegian island.

The vault, which opened in 2008, contains the seeds of more than 525,000 crop varieties, and was constructed as a fail-safe back-up plan to protect the existing world food supplies from destruction in the event of a large-scale catastrophe, built deep inside of a mountain to withstand rising sea levels and even a nuclear explosion.

Senator Cardin's entourage not only delivered an assortment of chili peppers, but seeds for many other crops -- like melons, peanuts, and beans -- from the United States Department Of Agriculture's National Plant Germplasm System in Fort Collins, Colorado.

In a press release about the delivery, Senator Cardin said:

"The world is interdependent when it comes to crop diversity, the essential raw material needed for a healthy and robust food supply. As we manage the impact of climate change and other natural and man-made disasters around the world, the seed vault in Svalbard will be the safety deposit box that ensures we can keep that food supply intact."

Cardin was joined on the expedition by Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL), Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ), Senator Tom Udall (D-NM), Representative Louise McIntosh Slaughter (D-NY), Representative Robert B. Aderholt (R-AL), and Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX).

Did a Dem have to lead the way in bringing chili peppers? All next week the GOP will claim he was pandering for the Latino vote! LOL

As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.
08:20 PM on 07/14/2010
Exactly. They can afford to fly themselves and their entourage up to the Arctic, but when it comes to helping citizens with an unemployment extension then suddenly we don't have the money.
09:34 PM on 07/14/2010
They were doing it to highlight threats posed to food security by climate change. I doubt these are people who are voting against unemployment benefits.

How bizarre. Did they place the pesticides used to foul up the planet in the first place in the vault too? Anyway, in the event of a nuclear holocaust (which of course will cause a run on people wanting to eat chili peppers) would the soil and water even be safe enough to plant them? Shouldn't we also be concerned with keeping our water potable and conserving it? Without water the seeds wont do us much good. Again, for some reason I find this trip to be a bit bizarre. Was a Monsanto rep there too? Afterall, Durbin is part of a group trying to push GMOs in foreign aid as well. Besides, should a catastrophe of that magnitude strike, we already know Congress will be taken care of while we are left out here to die and fend for ourselves. So sorry, I don't find their trip altruistic at all.

Wow, those were my thoughts, too. Imagine a devastated planet and somebody trying to get to the vault. Where was that exactly again? On a remote arctic island? We are so fooled 24/7 and the real sad thing is how many people buy into this stuff. Seems they're all on the 'Weekly World News'.

Have these seeds been touched in any possible way by Monsanto? Are these genetically modified?

I have an idea. Destroy the seed vault and all the seeds in it. And make damn sure that we don't take the planet a point where our descendants would have to be going into a seed vault to plant a victory garden.

Save your indignation for something useful. They waste more money by being in session.
