Iowa Tea Party Billboard Compares Obama To Hitler, Lenin

LUKE MEREDITH   07/13/10 10:30 PM ET   AP

Obama Hitler Tea Party

DES MOINES, Iowa — A billboard created by an Iowa tea party group that compares President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Lenin is drawing sharp criticism – even from fellow tea party activists who have condemned it as offensive and a waste of money.

The North Iowa Tea Party began displaying the billboard in downtown Mason City last week. The sign shows large photographs of Obama, Nazi leader Hitler and communist leader Lenin beneath the labels "Democrat Socialism," "National Socialism," and "Marxist Socialism."

Beneath the photos is the phrase, "Radical leaders prey on the fearful & naive."

The co-founder of the roughly 200-person group said the billboard was intended to send an anti-socialist message. But Bob Johnson admitted Tuesday that the message may have gotten lost amid the images of fascist and communist leaders.

"The purpose of the billboard was to draw attention to the socialism. It seems to have been lost in the visuals," Johnson said. "The pictures overwhelmed the message. The message is socialism." He said he didn't know of any plans to remove the sign.

But others in the tea party movement criticized the sign.

"That's just a waste of money, time, resources and it's not going to further our cause," said Shelby Blakely, a leaders of the Tea Party Patriots, a national group. "It's not going to help our cause. It's going to make people think that the tea party is full of a bunch of right-wing fringe people, and that's not true."

Blakely also expressed outrage at linking Obama to Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany who oversaw the killing of 6 million Jews and whose invasions of neighboring countries led to World War II.

"When you compare Obama to Hitler, that to me does a disservice to the Jews who both survived and died in the Holocaust and to the Germans who lived under Nazi regime rule," Blakely said.

John White, an Iowa coordinator of the Tea Party Patriots, said that he can understand the North Iowa group's perception that Obama is "Hitler-esque," but he thinks the billboard is offensive and unproductive. White said that he planned to discuss the matter with national tea party officials.

"I fear they may end up in some kind of trouble over it, because it's basically slanderous," White said. "I don't know that it's the message we want to send. I'd much rather see billboards that say 'Remember in November. Get Out and Vote.'"

The billboard is owned by Waitt Outdoor of Omaha, Neb. Waitt general manager, Kent Beatty, said the company didn't have a problem with the message.

"We believe in freedom of speech," Beatty said. "It doesn't reflect our views, necessarily."

The White House declined to comment on the sign.

One person who welcomed the billboard was Dean Genth, a Democratic activist from Mason City, a city of 30,000 people just south of the Minnesota border, who said he thinks the sign lays bare the views of tea party supporters.

"I welcome them to continue to spew that kind of stuff because I think it's going to do a lot of good for the good Democrats around the state," Genth said.

(This version CORRECTS what billboard says to `Democrat Socialism' instead of `Democratic Socialism.')

Another of instance of the Tea Party bearing false witness against its neighbor. How much more evidence do you need? If you are in the Tea Party, looking the other way won't do. If you are wise, you must expel these fools from among you. And if you open your eyes, you will find there are MANY to expel. You point at the Republicans and Democrats. But, please, take the beam out of your own eye first.

And actually, isn't Democratic Socialism drastically different than either National Socialism (Nationalsozialismus, or Nazism). And Marxist Socialism is not primarily what Lenin followed, he derived Leninism from his interpretation of Marxism. Also, isn't Nazism directly at odds with many of the concepts of Marxism? In fact, Hitler didn't like the inclusion of socialist as a word defining the Nazi party. Regardless, this billboard is very much like putting a donut, a wheel, and a CD on a billboard and saying "Holy CRAP - they're all round! You know what this means, don't you?!..." Draw your own conclusions (and visit our website if you don't know what those conclusions should be - nudge, nudge...)

"We are socialists, we are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions." --Adolf Hitler

Sarah Palin's comments on the NAACP resolution condemning "ELEMENTS" of the Tea Party as racist: "The charge that Tea Party Americans judge people by the color of their skin is false, appalling, and is a regressive and diversionary tactic to change the subject at hand"

vs.

Hey Tea Party, Can we quit the namecalling and talk about the issues, or is that too embarassing for you?

Well James the baggers can't really talk about the overwhelming issue that has their panties in a knot. It would not be politically correct to admit what the REAL problem is.

I believe the constant hurling of the word "racist" at any opposition to Obama is really starting to hinder rational debate. Look in the mirror before you start projecting.
03:14 PM on 07/16/2010
I partially agree with you here, b-dob. However, the constant ignorance by MOST of the right of actual, real racism and race-baiting by SOME on the right (acknowledging that "race-card playing" certainly happens on the left as well) also needs to be looked at. It seems like most Tea Party people hide their head in the sand despite clear and significant evidence of racist elements within their movement.

WHen are the ea Party organizers going to ask those all those people at their rllies not to bring signs like that? The rallies I have gone to, sponsored by MoveOn or OFA ask that people ony bring signs pertinent to the rally. You should have seen the health care rallies, none of the tea party showed any awareness of anything relevant. Honestly, I think most in the tea party are not really racists, they are just narcissistic. BUt some of those people are racists, and that's a fact, and they seem to have no problem letting the worst elements into their midst.

Frankly as someone who believes Team Obama (by their own words) are extremely bad news for our Republic to compare him to Hitler is inaccurate & not helpful. I have no doubt in my mind that he is indeed a socialist, however Hitler - PLEASE!!!
BTW, it's interesting to note that James Carville's firm Democracy Corp polled the folks with the following result:--

"The latest poll by Democracy Corps, the firm of James Carville and Stan Greenberg, has Republicans leading on the generic ballot among likely voters, 48 percent to 42 percent.
Deep in the poll, they ask, “Now, I am going to read you a list of words and phrases which people use to describe political figures. For each word or phrase, please tell me whether it describes Barack Obama very well, well, not too well, or not well at all.”

On “too liberal,” 35 percent of likely voters say it describes Obama “very well,” 21 percent say “well,” 21 percent say “not too well,” and 17 percent say “not well at all.” In other words, 56 percent of likely voters consider Obama too liberal.

When asked about “a socialist,” 33 percent of likely voters say it describes Obama “very well,” 22 percent say “well,” 15 percent say “not too well,” and 25 percent say “not well at all.”

In other words, 55 percent of likely voters think “socialist” is a reasonably accurate way of describing Obama."

Team Obama Socialist?? --- DUH...........

All I can say is the world is watching and reading ....America is starting to show it's own hypocracy...There use to be a saying..Anyone can be President ...I guess that only applies to certain people...For the TeaBaggers to make such a claim...is a slap in the face of history and intelligence. As an outsider looking in I am losing respect for your country....time to step up and show that this kind of hate mongering and racist tinged politics has no place in America.....time for Americans to walk their talk...

Let me get this straight. You honestly believe the left didn't constantly compare Bush to Hitler, burn him in effigy, etc...? Seriously?!
10:59 PM on 07/18/2010
The left hung Bush in effigy and made movies about killing Bush. If anyone tried that with Obama, they would be called racist and arrested.

Hear in Nebr. they are red necks of the worse kind! They hate colored skin people! They have to set up plants, bussiness in communities that are Hispanic freindly. Thanks to the Freindly people of Fremont Ne. our first Racially abuse case took place in a store there when they passed the Immigration Bill. Young kids are now getting in on the racial name calling accross ne. That kind of crap is exactly the excuse the inner gangs are waiting for to go to war with each other! The Tea Party & civil rights meeting may result in a teachable moment, perhaps where wisdom, and reason prevail if it’s not distorted for political gain. I wonder if I can see Jealous’s birth certificate?

Guns are dangerous, and the “man, “ Benjamin Todd Jealous is simply doing the job he was elected to do.Watching debate in America is sometimes like a good episode of Hawaii 5-0.

At any rate I’m “just saying” that’s my opinion on guns, and the nation’s oldest civil rights movement you can take it, or leave it.

Again, I may change my mind on this subject in a month, or so, I’m just a woman after All:}

. I’m known to change my mind on occasion so I might say they should be visible next week so we can see where the jerks are in the crowd, and watch them carefully.

Further the .www.naacp.org is compelled by votes, and resolutions to carry out member approved actions that protect the American public whether it be in speeches, or scholarship funds for college students desiring to improve themselves as Americans, and contribute to its greatness through all colors, races from crème to cocoa, and dialects. The NAACP is a transparent movement where you can probably read the resolution online, and watch the speech on YouTube just as you can see the Tea Party on CSPAN, FOX, or MSNBC.
