Things are going to get worst for illegals before they get better.

But it turns out that it’s the Rhode Island police who insist on enforcing the law."

I'm all for immigration reform, but this seriously smacks of Repub political wrangling more than anything else. They don't really have a leg to stand on with that "Obama's not doing anything about immigration" - this administration has actually stepped up deportations in a HUGE way, far exceeding the deportation rate under the Bush administration. He's taken a lot of flack from the left and from pro-immigrant groups for it.

There are leaders on both sides who would rather have us all fighting than making progress and asking for change. Open your eyes, and learn to think for yourself. If only Thurgood Marshall were alive today, he would be supporting the Arizona law!

1975 US v Brignoni-Ponce case:

"Large numbers of native-born and naturalized citizens have the physical characteristics identified with Mexican ancestry, and even in the border area a relatively small proportion of them are aliens. The likelihood that any given person of Mexican ancestry is an alien is high enough to make Mexican appearance a relevant factor, but standing alone it does not justify stopping all Mexican-Americans to ask if they are aliens." (Majority opinion joined by Marshall)

Note: Mexican appearance is a relevant factor but not alone sufficient justification. That is PRECISELY what the Arizona law says.

Thurgood Marshall was, in this case, on the money, correct, objective, and reasonable. It isn't racial profiling--one is not profiling a race. One is PROFILING THE PERPETRATORS! This produces a set of characteristics which allows one to more readily identify other perpetrators.

As the Marshall opinion said, the majority of Hispanics along the border may be legal, but the majority of illegal aliens along the border are Hispanic! (I paraphrase, to be sure.) Thus Hispanic appearance SHOULD be A FACTOR in deciding whom to ask for ID.

I have never talked to anyone as afraid as you. This is incredible. Tell me in what way is othe President destroying the union? Give something concrete, a formula if you will that can be run forward and backwards as all legitimate formulas work. He gave us a Healthcare package and you have been told to say that is socialism but did they tell you why it is? Did they also inform you as to why Socialism scares you? What do you think would happen to your life under Socialism? Be careful here for I have lived in Europe and spent a lot of time in so-called Socialist countries. Any distortions or lies about socialism are easily sorted.

One more point sparky. These words cannot be verified as they were transcribed from a campaign debate. But we can agree that he did have questions about slavery as many people at the time did. However, if you read about his and his presidency, his thinking on this completely changed. A couple of other quotes:

"In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free -- honorable alike in what we give, and what we preserve. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best, hope of earth."

...And his most famous...

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

Absolutely right. There was huge debate about such phrases as all men being created equal simply because many of the founders didn't actually believe it. The text of the Declaration was scrapped a couple of times, as were other documents because of some deeply held views which, I had hoped, this country had left behind awhile ago. And yet, here we go again, with a group of people that appear to want to take us right back to that. Our founders were not all great people - they all participated in something great, but were not all great unto themselves.

Racists don't change their stripes. I have the entire maternal half of my extended family as non observant LDS members, all originally in Salt Lake City, but some have migrated to Vegas. One cousin who married a half Spanish half Chicano woman, and one his sons who favored his mother was treated exactly opposite his slightly older anglo looking brother, He was called SP*C, and beaten by thugs in his class, his whiter looking brother with red hair, was a star athlete.
Feds should bust into Utah and find this organization some believe comes from a social services agency, and charge these folks with RICO like the mob. Knowing NOTHING happens in Utah outside the LDS control or approval, and knowing the maggots in West Jordan who have elected rabidly anti-gay bigots....it shouldn't be hard to find where this sh*t came from. My grandparents lived in an area of SLC which was becoming a high density Latin@ neighborhood, so the agencies inside SLC proper should be looked at closely.
