White House Defends Record Of Political Support For Democrats (MEMO)

White House Democrats

WASHINGTON -- Facing criticism from House Democrats, the White House circulated a memo Wednesday that details all the political help that President Barack Obama and administration officials have given to the party's candidates.

The White House portrayed the memo as a regular update of its political operation, but the timing suggested otherwise. The memo came as congressional Democrats, fearing disaster in the fall elections, have expressed frustration with the Obama team and its effort to help Democrats.

In a meeting Tuesday with rank-and-file members, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi lashed out over White House spokesman Robert Gibbs' recent comments that Republicans could win a majority, according to an aide who was present. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was private.

On Wednesday, Gibbs defended his remark about the House, but hastened to add that he doesn't think that will happen. "I don't think I said anything that was politically shocking," Gibbs said during his daily briefing with reporters.

The memo describes how Obama and his team are working with candidates ahead of this year's midterm elections. The White House plans to dispatch Obama across the country at least once a week between now and Nov. 2.

So far, Obama has appeared at 32 political events during his presidency and attended hundreds more in swing states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida.

"The president, vice president, first lady, Cabinet officers and senior staff have participated in 187 political events in the last 18 months, all with the intention of directly supporting candidates on the ballot in 2010 or building up the infrastructure of party committees," according to the memo provided by a Democratic official. "(Forty) more events are currently or tentatively scheduled and dozens more will be organized in the next few months."

Congressional Democrats have pushed Obama's circle to do more. Many fret that the White House is ineffective in using the heft of the presidency to help elect Democrats to statehouses, the House and Senate. In private, several Democrats said they worry Obama's team is more focused on its own 2012 re-election bid than the midterm elections that would shape the final two years of the president's first term.

Confidence in the White House political operation was shaken after Democrats lost the Massachusetts Senate seat in January, and governorships in New Jersey and Virginia last year. With Obama's popularity waning and voters frustrated with Democratic control of the White House and Congress, political aides have braced for a brutal election season.

Hoping to stem losses, Obama's inner circle reviewed their schedules and have escalated their political travel. White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel has appeared at fundraisers for candidates, such as Reps. Baron Hill of Indiana and Tim Bishop of New York. Emanuel's deputy, Jim Messina, spoke at a fundraiser for Senate hopeful Alexi Giannoulias in Illinois. And Education Secretary Arne Duncan has campaigned for Sen. Michael Bennet, a Colorado Democrat who a tough primary challenge.

House Democratic leaders, critical of Obama's political team, were set to raise their concerns during a White House meeting Thursday evening. They also planned to talk with the president about Gibbs, who is both the administration's top spokesman and a senior adviser who started working for Obama during his 2004 Senate campaign.

WTF gives with the Democratic Party's leadership? Gibbs sounds suspiciously like a quitter--hardly an impression that will energize the base, or generate cash flow. Irrational it may be, but more and more, I get the uneasy feeling that President Obama is whispering, "Is it okay if we're not Republicans?" behind his hand to Mitch McConnel.

WHAT DEMOCRATS NEED IS NOT VARIATIONS ON THE THEME BUT A METAMORPHOSIS.

It is going to happen, all that is in play is how it comes about and the personal fate of the individual lives and politicians involved. Any historically minded person knows that what Democrats are trying to bring about (in terms of reform or improvement or just keeping up with problems) in all the areas from environment, education, economy, etc., are definitive and inevitable and the Republicans have good points in terms of making it economic, minimal waste and size of government, BUT it takes getting it through the meat grinder.

There is a neutral way to describe things that describe the status between the "players" and let them make the most of it. Circumstances dictate that they comply with gravity and the laws of human behavior so it is inevitable anyway.

Basically both sides are being too "idealist"---that is the best warning to give them. They are promoting positions that are too shallow, one-dimensional and not thought out as much as they think.

No use warning that the "Sarah and Beck Phenomena" is precarious---both sides are hoping that these "wild cards" or "jokers" help their side in elections. What can help in terms of warnings is to get more input from political players who have been around in terms of winning elections. Where both sides are short is making too many impulsive, short-term investments.

hey gibbs?
Want a landslide? Go all out for the American people instead of the rich and corporations.

I'm tired of the 24/7/365 campaigning from both parties.
We DESPERATELY need publicly funded elections and a campaign period of maybe 3 months.

Memo to House Democrats

Obama sold out on every single bill you tried to get passed for him, compromising and waffling when it came time to get Senate approval. What makes you think he won't sell out on you too?

After Incurring the wrath of Nancy for his statement suggesting they may lose the House to Republicans He had to alter his statement somewhat. The last thing Democrats need is for Obama to run around the country begging people to support them for reelection. His track record hasn't been all that great lately.

The overall problem with Democrats is that they have not figured out how to organize a change-progressive-reform agenda in a populist method that gets the support of the public.

There is no simpler way to say it. It started with the medical reform effort that came across as controversial and elitist ("we know better than the public, they will support it later when it takes effect"). It is just very difficult to do. Obama knew he was going against the advice of his most experience advisers and going out ahead of the public.

This carries on to other issues such as immigration. The White House is pursuing an unpopular approach. Mainly because it does not explain things on the street level. Admittedly it is very difficult, but they are also not entirely realistic. They do not seem to understand that illegal immigration can't be controlled just on the border, but through inspections in the interior. This means that the states will have to help through their police forces. The unfortunate result is that illegal immigrants, most of whom are themselves the victims of economic desperation in Mexico, will only receive some form of relief after the problem will have appeared to be subsiding. But the White House, through the Justice Department, is trying to take the side of illegals, in the eyes of the majority of Americans. Very difficult situation.

Obama is just not receiving top notch advice on how to connect with the majority of Americans.

"Obama is just not receiving top notch advice on how to connect with the majority of Americans."

Obama is connecting with the majority of americans.
The problem - for Obama - is said majority rejects what he has to say.

THE EXTORTED STATES OF CORPORATISM - AKA THE U.S.A.

In today’s America, the banking, wall street, oil, insurance, medical, pharmaceutical and MSM industries are all OPEC-like CARTELS and MONOPOLIES that use their extortionate profits to BUY POLITICIANS and the government POLICIES they formulate. Our Supreme Court voted along party lines, 5 to 4, and declared that BUYING POLITICIANS is LEGAL.

We ARE NOT a DEMOCRACY or a FREE ENTERPRISE SYSTEM anymore; we are a PLUTOCRACY whose rich CORPORATIONS are BRIBING the PEOPLE’S career REPRESENTATIVES to enforce the greed of PROFITEERING and sacrifice the welfare of 99% of it’s citizens. Only the RICH are served by today’s BOUGHT and PAID FOR political/government officials.

From President Obama on down, CAREER POLITICIANS are allowing/abetting the EVIL of MONEY to DRIVE AMERICA INSANE and to BANKRUPT and DESTROY everything that was once PRINCIPLED, CARING and DECENT in American society.

IF President Obama is unwilling to FIGHT THE RIGHTEOUS FIGHT and sometimes LOSE, he will PERPETUATE and STRENGTHEN the tentacles of moral and ethical corruption that are literally STRANGLING THE LIFE OUT OF ALL THINGS AMERICAN!

IT’S NOT AMERICAN GOVERNMENT THAT WE THE PEOPLE SHOULD FEAR……IT’S AMERICAN CAREER POLITICIANS WHOSE VOTES AND CAREERS ARE BEING SOLD TO RICH ELITISTS!

Without strictly limiting campaign financing to PUBLIC INDIVIDUALS ONLY with maximum contribution limits AND also implementing SHORTER term limits, corporations will BUY POLITICIANS because today’s politicians are more concerned about THEIR CAREERS than what’s in the best interest of “we the people”.

Gibbs doesn't serve the WH well, nor does Axelrod. They both need to go. They are 2 uninspiring men who were good for the campaign behind the scenes but are jneffective for governance.

I guess you're as good as the people you surround yourself with. He can't be out there everyday selling his agenda.

But this is the message I would give the president (pretty presumptuous of me): Mr. President, you have a golden opportunity to do the right things (as you expressed during the campaign) .. Please be a leader and take that opportunity and reelection be d@mned ... If you are to lose the next election, then go out with the biggest bang this country has ever known. That will set us on the right course. History will be good to you even as a one-termer.

Well, you are probably correct that they would do that if they take over the House.

However, I will note that you mentioned nothing, not one impeachable offense that they have on him. Nor will you.

About to say the same thing. What impeachable offense? There is no article in the Constitution that allows impeachment of a President because you don't LIKE him. That's what elections are for. Also, the Senate is the judicial body for impeachment and it will still be solid Democrat. Nice try, Americanium.

Too many democrats have undermined the Obama administrations goals. Thus, they have cut their own throats. The only way they have to win is to pass a progressive agenda between now and the election even if that means reconcilliation on every measure in the senate. If one democrat and 40 republicans vote against a bill the democrats are going to be held responsible and the republicans rewarded. It is not fair but that is how it is received by the masses. Might as well go out doing good for the country even if it will be republicans taking credit for it after the election. Put the country before your reelection! That is change we can believe in.

We only need 51 for reconciliation. It's also in the Constitution - majority vote is 50 plus 1. Funny how the TP'ers don't care so much about that aspect of the Constitution.
