Alvin Greene's Embarrassing Cash Haul: Only $1,000

Alvin Greene

WASHINGTON — Democratic Senate nominee Alvin Greene still hasn't raised much money in his bid to unseat Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina.

Five weeks after stunning the party with his primary win, the unemployed veteran and political novice said he has raised about $1,000. DeMint, the incumbent, had more than $3.5 million on hand after his last filing.

Greene, who recently set up a donations page on his website, said he remained optimistic. He said it's the issues that count, not money.

Candidates don't have to file financial reports detailing their expenses and contributions until they hit a $5,000 threshold, so Greene has not yet filed any paperwork.

Folks, here's some food for thought, I know some of you support Alvin Greene's hope to be elected to the US Senate over Jim "DeMinted". I know it's a long shot for Greene to win. But for those who've unfairly maligned Greene as crazy, unstable, st up id or mentally re tar ded, think about this.

Issues we can almost assure Alvin Greene would strongly support if he's elected over DeMinted are:

Obama worked very, very hard to go from an ordinary guy to being the President. I am saddened to see how much people marginalize that kind of effort. I can't imagine the effort Obama put into his career trajectory, to reach so incredibly high without any kind of political lineage or family wealth.

In a way, it's understandable. The American Dream is to become vastly rich and powerful without actually working. But when we stop and think, who should we look up to? The guy who just raised his hand and got picked at random? The guy who didn't bother to campaign or fundraise? That's the guy we hold forth as an example? This is no better than the conservative obsession with Sarah Palin. Palin was "ordinary," and look how she turned out.

If a man can't even be bothered to hold a rally, how can you trust that he'll buckle down and do the work in Congress? It's not easy, you have to manage an entire office of staff, and make a lot of decisions on how to vote on literally thousands of bills. A guy who can't even leave his house to meet the voters, is that a guy who can do that much work? Reporters have to track him down and twist his arm to answer questions. Can he really handle Congress? Why would anyone think he could? What proof has he given?

Tehixe, the SC Senate election is still almost 4 months away, yet you're behaving as if DeMint has already won the election! Remember, Greene has only won the Democratic primary election, not the actual mid-term Senate election. That said, what makes you so cocksure that Greene won't hold some political rallies or make his positions better known in the immediate future for voters to make better informed decisions about him? You do realize it takes money to hold rallies, to travel around the state, to open a campaign office, to print documents, to pay staffers, etc. You've already written Greene off as inconsequential and unworthy of any serious consideration.

"Can he really handle Congress? Why would anyone think he could? What proof has he given?"

Well, you show us some actual proof that he cannot do any of these things? Greene is a college graduate from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. He has spent 13 years serving in the Air Force and Army. Therefore, we can at least surmise that he's not st up id or slow-witted or mentally re tar ded or emotionally unfit or totally unqualified to serve in a political capacity...unless he proves otherwise. That proof has yet to be determined. Much of what we know now about Greene is mostly speculation, wild-eyed opinions, unconfirmed conspiracy theories and pure conjecture on whether he's qualified to serve or not serve in the US Senate.

I'm not sure that he won't, I'm sure that he hasn't. If he does, then good for him. But I'm not going to hold my breath, given his lack of enthusiasm so far.

He's the one running for office, the burden is on him to earn votes. "You can't prove he's no good" is not a good enough reason to vote for him. He has to prove that he's worth electing. Whether he is or not, he hasn't tried to prove it. That makes me skeptical. Someone claims to want the job, but then doesn't take any real step to get it, beyond paying the filing fee? It makes me wonder if he really wants the job, or if he's competent enough to put a basic campaign together (which he has, so far, not done).

I would be angry about all this if it wasn't South Carolina, and there was no incumbent. But with an incumbent republican in such a red state, it really doesn't matter who runs. The democratic nomination was just a punt anyway.

Fellow HP posters, I do see quite a few posters emotionally and politically supporting Alvin Greene and wishing him the best against Jim "DeMinted". Please, if you admire and support what Greene has done to this point that appears to have turned SC politics on its proverbial ear, please donate a few dollars to Greene's campaign. His donations go through a PayPal site and there is no fixed amount you must donate.

A donation of a single dollar or $5, $10, $25...whatever you can spare and whatever your hearts tell you to donate could make a difference. Please donate to help him mount a respectable campaign if you can. The "little" people, the "salt-of-the-earth" common folks, the socially disenfranchised, the "nobodies" in our society who often don't get an opportunity or a fair shake to grasp the brass ring often can and do make a difference when they're given the opportunity.

I think many disenfranchised Americans have a golden opportunity here to make a strong statement against the political power and corporate power structure in this country by electing an outsider..a man beholding to absolutely no one except to the people who elected him. It would be so refreshing to see Alvin Greene elected instead of the many "bought and paid for" politicians we now have. How much worse can Alvin Greene ever be when compared to many current politicians and especially to Jim DeMinted?

I wish you would have described his politics... what he believes in and stands for. I'm not going to support someone just because he's garnered a little attention. This is fast becoming a "cut off your nose to spite your face" kind of situation. What a shame.

That is of course your choice to make and I won't even try to convince you. If you weren't so lazy and have bothered to do your own research, you'd already know many of Alvin Greene's political positions, as generically simple as they may be right now.

If you do not want to donate to Alvin Greene, then don't! If you are a South Carolina resident and do not want to vote for Alvin Greene, then don't! It's really that simple.

TeeSC, basically Greene has said he supports job programs and trying to help the struggling middle and poor class people. His heart and politics seem to be sincere and in the right place, so let's give him a chance. What a shock it would be to old teabagger DeMint to be upended by a naive newcomer.

The thing is, Greene hasn't spoken up for the little person or the salt of the earth. He hasn't spoken up for anything! People were saying they didn't know who Obama was after he campaigned for two whole years. This guy has not campaigned at all, and we're supposed to trust that we know who he is and what he stands for? I'm a democrat, but I won't support a democrat who doesn't take a clear stance on any issues, or even demonstrate that he has grasp on the issues or is competent to run a senator's office.

...people have said that...

...people were saying that...

...I heard others say that...

Obviously, you let others either control what you think or let them do your thinking for you. As for me, I like to gather my own facts and ideas to form my own opinions on the things I support. Are you even a resident of South Carolina who actually can vote for Greene? Well, I am not an SC resident, I am a PA resident. Therefore, I have no political dog in this fight and if you aren't an SC resident, then neither do YOU!

But since you claim you are a Democrat, and since Alvin Greene has won the Democratic primary, no matter the circumstances, tell me then...what should be done? Under the current circumstances, what should SC Democrats do? Should they ignore it all and give in to the ReTHUGlipigs without a fight so Jim DeMinted can cakewalk into another Senate term totally unopposed?

As a claimed Democrat, what do YOU think the Democratic Party and the SC Democrats should do?
