Dexia Towers

Inhabitat.com:

Thinking about turning on the news or heading to Weather.com to check out the forecast? Bo-ring! Wouldn't it be infinitely cooler if you could just glance over at a giant skyscraper illuminated by a rainbow of 72,000 LEDs to let you know whether it was going to rain or be sunny? Well that's exactly what the Dexia Towers in Brussels do.

If you're outside looking at this building, don't you already know what the weather is?

Sure, lets waste energy to tell you how much energy you will need tomorrow to escape the weather... doh!

We don't need no stinkin' thermometer to beat Baker City.

We got the weather beacon that tops out at 321 feet.

I don't know if they still do it, but at one time, if you went into the building, they handed out wallet size cards with info on the weather beacon.

When I was a child, a local bank had a huge "weather ball," perched on the top of it's headquarters building, downtown, and smaller ones scattered around the city on branch offices and billboards. It would glow different colors to indicate the forecast weather and blink for precipitation. There was a nice little jingle to help remember what the colors meant. That was a long time ago, but it was as accurate as today's forecasts with the "rock star," weathermen and women with their satellite tracking and doppler weather radar. I miss it.

145 meters? That ain't no skyscraper!
The commonly used term for buildings under 200 meters is "high rise".

LEDs use 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs...but imagine how much energy they would save if they turned off all 72,000 LEDs...

True, but - for example - if a foodstuff is promoted as having 1/3rd the amount of carbs and fat, you then don't go and eat 3 of them as a result? :)

Thankfully all of those lights aren't incandescent bulbs, but it still isn't cheap to light up. :(

Seriously? What a waste of money. Right below those lights there is a homeless man looking for food. At least he can see what he is looking for a little better now I guess.

OK, now that's just plain cool. I could see us using something like that in So Cal for indicating smog levels, seismic events, how much BS is spewing from Sacramento... endless possibilities!

I can see them doing this on the new WTC site . . . for the terror alert level.

Take the quick poll at this interesting new website that just launched today . . . . idea clearinghouse and NOT A BP OR GOVERNMENT WEBSITE : http://www.bpspillsolutions.com/BPspill/mainPolls.asp

What a waste of electricity. People can find out what the forecast is going to be on Weather.com. How many people are gonna see the building anyways?

Get off your computer now before you waste any more electricity.
