Huffington Post     First Posted: 07/14/10 12:32 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:05 PM ET

To your employer, you are what you tweet.

While most of your Twitter updates may be harmless--whether it's the latest viral video or what you had for breakfast--voicing an opinion on Twitter, even if it's not expressly critical, can land you in hot water and out of a job.

We've taken a look at 13 people who were fired over their Twitter posts. Was it excessive or did they earn it? Vote in the slideshow below.

'Cisco Fatty' Loses Job Offer
1 of 14
After an interview at Cisco Systems, Connor Riley (aka @theconnor) confessed in a tweet that she would hate the job but relish the "fatty paycheck." When a channel partner advocate for Cisco Alert stumbled across her Twitter account, theconnor's fate was sealed. "Who is the hiring manager," the Twitter sleuth wrote. "I’m sure they would love to know that you will hate the work. We here at Cisco are versed in the web."

The story became an overnight sensation and earned theconnor the unfortunate nickname "Cisco Fatty." Someone even created a website called CiscoFatty.com.

As a Hispanic, I find that tweet was ethnically insensitive. White, Black, and Asian are races. Hispanic is not. Sort of my humble opinion but the U.S. Census says that Hispanics can be of any race.

you know, i actually agree with you and am glad, that as an hispanic, you acknowledge that. i live in ny and we have healthy dominican and puerto rican communities and i've often gotten frustratred trying to explain that hispanic is not a race. there are black hispanics and white hispanics, etc. so i'm glad that you have set the record straight.

Are you kidding? She essentially commits a crime and the waiter is the one who was fired? Probably for his lack of discretion. Eff it--she's cheap and inconsiderate! It's a $14 meal *plus* tip, betch! Pay up!

If you have anything negative to say about your job or people, do it in a forum that is private. Twitter is for fun and meaningful information. You won't be able to us Twitter if you can't pay your phone bill with no income.

what absolutely fascinates me is the fact that the Library of Congress has been cataloging and archiving every single Tweet... I think from day one.

The people you work with make all the difference to me. My only complaint to the boss, any boss, is that they hire jerks and expect me to weed them out. I find it easier to just work somewhere else where they care about their employees.

why shouldn't she be called out for interfering with someone's livelihood? I hate how people seem to think that celebrities are entitled to privilege and the average joe deserves to be trampled underfoot.

Tips are how servers stay alive.

Some companies are investing an inordinate amount of time spying on employees. I can understand prospective employees. But, if a worker is meeting or exceeding their job expectations, why fire them for some unflattering remark--which may in fact be the truth--about the company? If anything, you'd want to use the information like an employee survey to identify areas that might need improving. This type of stealth survey would probably have more cred...

More disturbing to me is the one who was fired for having a sex blog in what's described as a "secret", i.e. anonymous, manner. Her Twitter account was under initials. Whatever happened to free speech? Yes I realize the First Amendment doesn't legally prohibit a private nonprofit from forbidding someone who talks about subjects they don't like from holding a job with them - nor should it. But it's sort of the principle of the thing, you know what I mean? Granted, I'm too distant from those involved to know much else than what it sounds like...

I do wonder which nonprofit it was though. A Christian charity, perhaps? That or a children's charity are the only ones that I would think would have a huge (legitimate) image problem with their employees GASP admitting anonymously online that like everyone else they're interested in the general subject of sex. The woman should talk to Regina Lynn - she can probably give her some tips on how to turn the blog into something that might support her now that she's out a job. :P

The really funny thing about the California Pizza Kitchen guy is that his "real" persona is just as much of a phony act as his waiter persona. What--did this guy grow up in a rap video? Keep on keepin' it ril, Timothy DeLaGhetto. Stay fly.
