iPhone 4 Antenna Might Cut Calls, Apple Engineer Allegedly Warned Jobs

SEE UPDATE BELOWLast year, Ruben Caballero, an Apple senior engineer and antenna expert, reportedly warned Apple CEO Steve Jobs that issues with the phone's antenna could "lead to dropped calls," writes Bloomberg, citing a source "familiar with the matter."

According to Bloomberg's report, Caballero "informed Apple's management the device's design may cause reception problems, said the person, who is not authorized to speak on Apple's behalf and asked not to be identified. A carrier partner also raised concerns about the antenna before the device's June 24 release, according to another person familiar with the situation."

Despite record sales and rave reviews, Apple's new iPhone 4 has come under fire for what some believe is a design defect with the phone's antenna, which is integrated with the smartphone's case. Consumer Reports, along with iPhone users, report that gripping the phone so that one's hand covers the lower left-hand side of the phone results in service disruptions.

Apple will be holding an iPhone 4 press conference Friday amid recall rumors. Shortly after the iPhone's launch, the company also announced that it was looking to hire antenna engineers.

UPDATE: An Apple spokesperson has responded to the Bloomberg report. "We challenge Bloomberg BusinessWeek to produce anything beyond rumors to back this up. It's simply not true," he said.
