This is great! Why can't we do this in Los Angeles??

American obesity is one hurdle for this program, our complete lack of respect for community property is yet another. Spokane Washington, my hometown, had a program like this 10 years ago. Volunteers fixed a few dozen old bikes, painted them lilac purple to deter theft, and let them loose downtown. Worked great for about a month, until 30+ bikes ended up in the Spokane River.

I'd like to think that our society has progressed a bit in those ten years, but I'm sure the fate of the bicycles would remain the same... though the timeline might stretch a bit further.

My guess is, that people of London are a bit more responsible. I hope it works great, and sets a model for the rest of the world!

It works pretty well in Paris with over 10000 bikes at 750 locations. Should work in London as well.

That's the same bike-sharing program we have here in Minneapolis, except ours are neon green. It's been really popular here, so hopefully it works great in London.

I've seen this work in Paris and it's great. Hope it catches on and spreads to more US cities.

I pray this is a huge success and catches on. I love bikes and they are the most elegant vehicle man has.

Sadly a lot of Americans would have to lose a bunch of weight first before even attempting bike riding. I know a lot of people who are intimidated by biking and would never consider this.

My husband bikes to work every other day, 25 miles round trip, for years. He is 55 but looks like 40. Exercise is the butter burner.
He thinks that cars are one of the contributors to obesity.
When we went to Europe we know the people are trimmer because they walk and they bike.
If more people will bike, walk or take public transits the BP of the world will have less clout.

It's true. When I lived in Europe I walked everywhere all the time and was incredibly fit despite large quantities of Guiness. And (I'm a little ashamed to say) it took a visit here from my mother-in-law to realize that I could easily walk to the local T@rget shopping center which I had always driven to before and a number of other local shops and businesses. We could all do it more.

A little off topic but I have been a big fan of renewable energy for some time. We have solar, wind and now magnetic energy is making a debut. www.youtube.com/watchv=Hs4GXH5Q3Rk&feature=related

Wow, not even one comment. I guess fitness and creating a better world with less pollution and consumption doesn`t make it on the agenda. It is a pity most people have no foresight as to where humanity is going. www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-QA2rkpBSY

This is a nation of obesity while the health care cost is going up faster by the year. We paved more black tops for cars than city parks. Fast food everywhere while the physical education in public schools are losing fundings. I mentioned that my husband rides his bike to work every other day and rides most weekends for recreation. His action is helping a little to cut pollution and his gasoline bill.
OT, we also dry out clothes on clothes line, and buy local grown food in our neighborhood farmer's markets. We just have to go back to basics.

An insightful comment on a sad situation. This country has a long, long way to go before it is where it needs to be mentally. The physical health will take care of itself, of we can get to a healthy mindset regarding the value of physical exercise and the benefits of doing the simple things, like getting on a bike.
