Obama Accuses Republicans Of Holding Unemployed Americans 'Hostage'

JULIE PACE   07/19/10 06:13 PM ET   AP

Obama Rose Garden Speech
President Obama delivered remarks at the White House on unemployment benefits.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama took aim at Republican lawmakers Monday, accusing them of holding the public hostage to Washington politics by blocking extended unemployment benefits for millions of out of work Americans.

"It's time to do what's right, not for the next election, but for the middle class," Obama said in a presidential jawboning statement in the Rose Garden Monday morning.

Lawmakers have battled for weeks over legislation extending unemployment benefits to workers who have been out of a job for long stretches of time. The last such extension expired at the end of May, leaving some 2.5 million people without benefits, with hundreds of thousands more losing benefits each week.

The Senate is set to take up the measure again Tuesday, immediately after the swearing in of a replacement for the late Sen. Robert Byrd. Filling that seat will give Democrats the 60 votes they need to block a Republican filibuster.

Obama's argument has become a familiar one, as Democrats try to use the Republican blockade of unemployment benefits as a wedge issue heading into the November midterm elections.

On Monday, he sought to cast his Republican opponents as hypocritical for having voted for extensions of unemployment benefits when his Republican predecessor, President George W. Bush, was in the White House, but not now. He accused Republican leaders of subscribing to what he called a misguided notion that providing unemployment aid to people lowers their incentive to look hard for a job.

"That attitude, I think, reflects a lack of faith in the American people," Obama said.

The president said that the out-of-work people he hears from are "not looking for a handout. They desperately want to work. Just right now, they can't find a job."

"These are honest, decent, hardworking folks who have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own."

The $34 billion needed to extend benefits would be borrowed, adding to the nation's mounting debt. Republicans have tapped into the public's anger and concern over the national debt, saying they would support extending jobless benefits only if the bill was paid for.

"Everyone agrees on extending the additional unemployment insurance, but the Democrat way is to insist we add it to the national debt at the same time, while blocking Republican efforts to pass the same extension without the debt," said Don Stewart, spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said extending unemployment benefits amounts to "emergency spending" that justifies higher deficits. Under GOP presidents, he told reporters, most Republican lawmakers agreed, but now they are insisting that extended benefits be paid for.

If the unemployment rate remains above 9 percent three months from now, Gibbs said, benefits may need to be extended again.

Maybe those folks could find a job if Obomber would quit holding the job creators hostage to ridiculous taxes...

I agree the C17 or any other piece of military hardware that is just being purchased because there is a P.O. number assigned to it should be scrapped. The tax increases on the top 2% is a horrible idea, many of these people are business owners that will use this money to employ people. In fact tax increases of any kind on anyone at this time is just totally irresponsible and short-sighted. He needs to create a business friendly environment instead of the uncertainly that he has created now. Very little hiring will be done until there is either a change in Obama"s approach to business or until Obama is un "employed"

Obama is accusing the GOP of using this issue as a political tool to "gin up the right" for the November elections when in reaity he is the one playing the "big game". Mitch McConnell has introduced a bill to extend the benefits that Obama says the GOP is against saying that unused stimulus money be used to pay for it.When there is over $400 billion of "stimulus" money that is still unspent it is nothing short of recklessness to increase the deficit rather that use these funds. Worse yet Obama is being "less than truthful" when he simply says that the GOP is against the extention. The only difference between the President and the GOP is how to pay for it.

"less than truthful" is putting it very nicely.

Unemployment benefits are critical to economic recovery. We have to help people to survive until we can reset. Here's a visual comment on the role of the Republicans in obstructing fair and necessary aid to the unemployed:

If we want to keep the budget balanced, I'd suggest we eliminate all subsidies for oil companies. We could eliminate funding for the C-17 transport plane, which the Pentagon does NOT want. We could eliminate all subsidies for producers of sugar, beef, and pork - All of these products endanger America's health and add to our medical bills. We could also raise the tax rates of the upper 2%. These are all good ways to finance unemployment benefits.

1st just to make the point I am not eligible to draw unemployment because I am an employer.
2nd I have only had one job since the end of march. Very unusual for me.
3rd I think they should extend unemployment my employees can still draw because they have not been off that long. But there are lots of people that are out of work for a long time.
4th If they don't do something to get the people working the rich people are going to find out that their wealth is going to be worthless. Remember it is just paper it not like it is something real.
5th. republicans need to get out of the way and let us fix their mess. It is what we do best.
Just look at history and you will see that everything the conservatives break the liberals fix.

You need to re-read history. Libs can take credit for this - it's been 18 months. Spend spend spend spend spend spend spend spend spend What? we have unused stimulus money? let's not use that...what the? does that make sense to you as a business owner?

I know many people would LOVE the chance to speak or go to an event with Obama. Especially to speak about the country's current issues. Anyone in Chicago or Chicago area or willing to come to Chicago can go to this event at the Cultural Center with him. Check out the details here: http://bit.ly/93iTC8

Unemployment benefits are important to the out of work people as myself and millions of others, I depend on it to pay my mortgage and since June 4 until now my mortgage is 2 months behind. congress continue to get paid regardless, think about the backbone of this country and do what is right. STOP making excuses and pass this bill so the people can have some relief.
11:37 PM on 07/20/2010
there is money available in the stimulus bill - why not use that?

According to trickle-down theory—a redirection Trojan Horse used by republicans to trick the general electorate into supporting huge tax cuts for the wealthy, and infamously labeled by Bush 41 as “voodoo economics,” cutting taxes for the wealthiest will boost the overall economy by creating jobs and increasing wages, which, in turn, will improve the standard of living for working class Americans. Rubbish! Republicans want to protect the rich first, hoping that the benefits they receive will eventually trickle down to the ordinary people. Strangely, no reputable economists have ever voiced belief in Reagan’s trickle down theory, choosing instead to rely on those pesky things called “facts.” 2001 to 2008 registered the weakest job and income growth in post-war America. When Bush entered office, 9% of the population was living in poverty; by 2008, that number had swelled to 17%. Under Bush, the number of homeless Americans increased 23%, unemployment doubled to 8%, monthly job growth was the worst of any cycle since 1945, household income growth was negative for the first time since tracking began in 1967, and the number of Americans receiving food stamps went from 17 to 48 million. Bush claimed tax cuts for the wealthy would create jobs. In fact, the private sector loss 650,000, and only 2 million new jobs were created, as compared to 22 million jobs created under Clinton. Republicans equal deficit.

All so true, and obvious to anyone with a brain who isn't warped. The effectiveness of right-wing disinformation machine on the American electorate is just unreal. Thanks for posting that concise and easy to read and digest synopsis.

Like the President said.Unlike what Mitch and the party of Hell No would like folks to believe...unemployment benefits is not some sort of welfare. These people had jobs..just remember that....bet you not one of the ones who received Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy are in the line or without health insurance...Not ONE.

Copy and paste your resume to the end of this petition. Let Washington know that we are not lazy, we’ve always worked, and we want to go back to working! This is an open letter to all of our leaders throughout the United States. It is meant to show them that there are many of us Americans that have worked faithfully for years in this country and want nothing more than to return to work. We are tired of the name calling and would like to see some real solutions towards job creation in our country. We are not lazy. We want to work. We need the extended benefits to keep us with a small amount of funds in order to keep looking for employment. These benefits in no way provide for a lifestyle that we want nor desire. http://www.change.org/petitions/view/americans_for_a_working_america

Thank you for bringing the comments on this article back into focus. People (R,C,tp) have been ranting about everything except the issues at hand, the state of UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS in America.

My favorite part:
"I dislike having to ask for assistance, but I am out of options other than to ask for your continued support of extended unemployment assistance. This small amount does not cover all my financial obligations, but will keep me afloat to persevere in my job search. These are extraordinary times and to deny the extension could, for some people, make the difference between being homeless and facing starvation."

Outstanding words!

I have a tenant who's gotten to the point he doesn't have $$ to put gas in his car. Since our area has no real public transportation, it's really hobbled his efforts to search for work or get to interviews. Poor guy's desperate.
