Shirley Sherrod says that she was forced to resign from her position at the USDA after her comments were taken out of context.

The NAACP has retracted its initial statement condemning those comments and says they were "snookered." They are calling for the administration to reconsider Sherrod's ouster.

***UPDATED*** 7/20/10, 12:46PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the woman Sherrod allegedly discriminated against considers Sherrod a "friend for life" and insists that she worked tirelessly to save her family's farm.

82-year-old Eloise Spooner says Sherrod "kept us out of bankruptcy."

"Her husband told her, 'You're spending more time with the Spooners than you are with me,' "Spooner told the AJC. "She took probably two or three trips with us to Albany just to help us out."

Sherrod also told the AJC that the incident took place 24 years ago, and that she told the story in order to emphasize the need to move beyond race. "The story helped me realize that race is not the issue, it's about the people who have and the people who don't," she said.

ORIGINAL STORY

Shirley Sherrod, a USDA official in Georgia, has resigned after publicly admitting that race played a factor in her decision to limit how much aid would be given to a white farmer.

Sherrod, who is African American, made the comments during a local NAACP banquet on March 27, according to information displayed on the video. A clip of her speech first appeared Monday morning on BigGovernment.com and aired that evening on Fox News.

Her resignation as the agency's state director of rural development was quickly accepted by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. He cited a zero-tolerance policy and told CNN that he was working to "reverse the checkered civil rights history at the department."

In her controversial speech, Sherrod discussed the first time she was "faced with having to help a white farmer save his farm." She claimed that during the conversation, the man "was trying to show me he was superior to me."

"I was struggling with the fact that so many black people had lost their farmland," Sherrod told the crowd. "And here I was faced with having to help a white person save their land."

"I didn't give him the full force of what I could do."

During the portion of her speech posted online, she mentioned that Chapter 12 bankruptcy had just been enacted for family farmers. That protection started in 1986, more than two decades before Sherrod joined the USDA. She added that the incident "opened my eyes."

The website for the department Sherrod last oversaw has a notice clearly stating that the USDA "prohibits discrimination in all its programs and activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, and marital or family status."

Sherrod appears to have a long record in the civil rights movement prior to her USDA appointment, which came almost exactly a year ago. It's possible that she has been on the other side of the "checkered history" that Vilsack referred to.

The Rural Development Leadership Network lists her as a board member and has a page congratulating her on the appointment. In that announcement, they state that Sherrod and her husband, Charles, were part of a multi-million dollar settlement against the USDA based on civil rights claims from the 1980s. The case wouldn't be settled until May 12, 2009. She was appointed to her USDA job two months later.

A picture on the RDLN website shows her standing with her husband next to a sign for the Charles M. Sherrod Civil Rights Park in their hometown of Albany, GA.

NAACP President Benjamin Jealous issued a statement late on Monday saying his organization was appalled by Sherrod's "shameful" actions.

The NAACP has recently been embroiled in a heated debate after passing a resolution condemning the tea party movement for tolerating bigotry. Mark Williams, spokesperson for the Tea Party Express, responded by calling the NAACP racist and was later expelled from the National Tea Party Federation for a racially charged blog post. Tea party activists are now planning a summit to combat racism.

According to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, the local chapter of the NAACP has also firmly rejected Sherrod's comments. They further report:

Sherrod, 62, lives in Albany. She was appointed to her position in by Obama in July 2009 to manage more than 40 housing, business and community infrastructure and facility programs, and more than $114 billion in federal loans.

Before that, she had served as director of the Georgia field office for the Federation of Southern Cooperative/Land Assistance Fund.

WATCH SHIRLEY SHERROD AT THE NAACP BANQUET:

FULL STATEMENT FROM NAACP PRESIDENT BENJAMIN JEALOUS:

Since our founding in 1909, the NAACP has been a multi-racial, multi-faith organization that-- while generally rooted in African American communities-- fights to end racial discrimination against all Americans.

We concur with US Agriculture Secretary Vilsack in accepting the resignation of Shirley Sherrod for her remarks at a local NAACP Freedom Fund banquet.

Racism is about the abuse of power. Sherrod had it in her position at USDA. According to her remarks, she mistreated a white farmer in need of assistance because of his race.

We are appalled by her actions, just as we are with abuses of power against farmers of color and female farmers.

Her actions were shameful. While she went on to explain in the story that she ultimately realized her mistake, as well as the common predicament of working people of all races, she gave no indication she had attempted to right the wrong she had done to this man.

The reaction from many in the audience is disturbing. We will be looking into the behavior of NAACP representatives at this local event and take any appropriate action.

We thank those who brought this to our national office's attention, as there are hundreds of local fundraising dinners each year.

Sherrod's behavior is even more intolerable in light of the US Department of Agriculture's well documented history of denying opportunities to African American, Latino, Asian American, and Native American farmers, as well as female farmers of all races. Currently, justice for many of these farmers is being held up by Congress. We would hope all who share our outrage at Sherrod's statements would join us in pushing for these cases to be remedied.

The NAACP will continue to advance the ideals of America and fight for freedom, justice and fairness for all Americans.

Watch her speech on the NAACP's website. I've quoted the first part below:

"Now, I grew up on a farm and didn't want anything to do with agriculture, but she (?) was right! There are jobs at USDA. And many times there are no people of color to fill those jobs cause we shy away from agriculture . . . we here the word agriculture we think only of working in the field. You heard of a lot of layoffs, have you heard of anybody in the Federal Government loosing their jobs? (Audience laughs) That's all I need to say."

I can sure see why Obama picked her. What a dedicated public servant.Watch her speech on the NAACP's website. I've quoted the first part below:

Hypocrites of the highest order are running this site. Go down to the original article FROM THIS SITE.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/20/shirley-sherrod-resigns-usda-naacp_n_652185.html

Where is the mention maybe we should wait to get all the information?

Where is the mention that this is Brietbart and Fox News so we should all take it with a grain of salt?

They appear to be taking the video as though it is the full story, just like everyone else in the country did, including the rest of the media, the NAACP, the Adminstration.

If they had waited and said they were going to review the entire situation before they fired, and someone who was apparently an admitted racist was on the USDA payroll, he would have been hammered twice as hard and the right would have been screaming about how they are all racists in the White House.

Think about this. Fox news lies (by presenting unsubstantiated allegations as fact), but it's Obama's fault because they believed our reporting. PRICELESS LOGIC!

First time poster...hi all.
The lady was fired after her comments were taken out of context. What government dimwit would drag an employee through the mud without taking the time to review the entire issue? Looks like the blame is sitting firmly in Mr. Vilsack. Yes, she struggled with some racism over 2 decades ago...and overcame it. Good for her! I do wish that in her speech she hadn't made the story so commical and that her NAACP audience hadn't found it worthy of a laugh.

As usual, the comments to an article reveal more about the persons who respond that anything the author of the article wrote.

One of the first lessons I learned in college was "Consider your source." The NAACP, USDA, all who were, as Jealous said, "Snookered" by the story of racism by Mrs. Sherrod deserve to have their brains washed out with a strong, natural soap.

This devious organization deliberately poured through numerous NAACP tapes to find one snippet to use, out of context, to discredit a dedicated human rights worker and organization. Senator Byrd changed-grew from a member of the KKK to a noted supporter of human rights. It took him years to change.

Mrs. Sherrod made her choice more than 20 years ago, even though her father was murdered by the KKK. She saw the humanity of all people. She never acted on hateful feelings. The farmers she helped are her friends. Hers is a story of reconciliation that no uninformed, fearful hater can conceive. Hear it ALL.

Action by hate filled, conservative reactionaries is the same tactic done to Reverend Wright; digging for one item--out of context-- to discredit a life's work, ignorant of Liberation Theology and hundreds of years of discrimination and death to people of color. His church includes whites. He nor Sherrod are racists. Their attackers are, and are ignorant (do not know.)

The shame of ignorance is beyond belief, knowledge and thought. It is insane.

It appears to me that the tail is wagging the dog.
This brings up several questions for me: First and foremost, who is responsible for this fiasco? Before demanding the resignation of Ms. Sherrod, why didn’t the White House and the Department of Agriculture make an attempt to verify the video and/or request specifics from Shirley Sherrod? Why would they trust the web posting by an individual who is known to post inaccuracies, specifically when they involve the Obama administration? I think all of these questions should have been responded to prior to the administration's rush to judgment!
I think it is too little too late to now say, as Tom Vilsack the Secretary of the USDA, is now saying, we will review the situation. It is like closing the barn door after the horses have run away. This rush to judgment has embarrassed Shirley Sherrod. I am very old school and was raised by parents who believed, if you wronged and embarrassed an individual you owed tha person an apology. That apology must be as public as the embarrassment. The White House and Secretary Vilsack should fly to Georgia, immediately, and ask Ms. Sherrod to forgive them for their rush to judgment. Do not fly Ms. Sherrod to Washington, DC to make a public appearance at the White House. This needs to take place on her turf. This administration needs to inconvenience itself as much or more than it has forced this former employee to have to endure.

Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow did an excellent job on the Sherrod matter, tonight(Wednesday). CNN has also done a fair job. I forced myself to watch Fox Noise to see how they would handle it. Sad! I never watch Fox, and about two minutes was all I could take. I was nauseated and felt as if I was in an alien world--honestl!

The sad part of this story is that what has been lost was the message that "HER" story was trying to convey. If Fox had bothered to read the entire story rather than the "creatively edited" version it chose to promote, their was a very poignant message on "growing past" racism that was totally lost on Fox. I'm not sure whether this lady was maligned more by Breitbart and Fox's despicable distortion or the treatment that she received from the Obama administration. Ms. Sherrod deserves more that a mea culpa..."a pound of flesh" would be about right. Roger Ales has plenty, but a lawsuit might hurt them more.

Fox minions are very slick--just not smart.
Of course they heard the full tape, but knew the damage they could do by editing as they did. We can hope that the veracity of the full story backfires on their calculated scheme.

Well, I agree that they knew that there was more to the tape, but chose not to secure it because that would deprive them of the cover of "deniable plausability". It's amazing the number of people that choose to be duped by Fox.

You're an army of one Gloria...even O'Reilly admitted his error. If any racist was exposed, it was Breitbart. Besides, if you look at his aurgument, it's pretty lame. He's basically saying, "It's okay for us to be racist, because you are too!" Racism in any form is reprehensible.

You really should read, or listen to the entire story. It was about a "life-lesson"...a "teaching" moment that seems to have totally eluded you. Life presents you with choices just as it "colors" your responses to those choices by your experiences. This lady had great justification to give in to her baser insticts, but she chose to grow beyond her prejudices...a lesson for us all.

"We heard the lies and accept them passively and formed an opinion supporting lies." This is what's wrong with America. We are intellectually lazy subscribing to the lowest common denominator of thought? Our nation is spiraling down in ignorance as we stop reading, thinking, allowing other to think for us while we spend most of our time watching reality TV and MSM programs with pundits who are paid to keep us divided.

With the exception of CBS, the programs I have watched this morning are not mentioning Fox News as a major player in this corporate media manipulation only Andrew Breitbart. There is nothing new about race baiting, these tacts have been used on poor people over and over again. Yet, we never learn and continue to buy into it.

As Shirley Sharrod proves anyone can change including a bigot.

"A man who views the world the same as fifty as he did at twenty has wasted 30 years of his life."
01:35 PM on 07/22/2010
You are so right when you say "we are intellectually lazy...". In addition, I also believe we have developed a 'Mickey D" mentality whereby everything must be responded to, acted upon and resolved instantly. We expect our meals in less than 60 seconds, our crimes solved in 47 minutes and our problems resolved via a 24 hour news cycle. Life is not that simple. It requires work, time and responsibility.
08:05 AM on 07/21/2010
Tried to tell people on these comments last night: whites are not oppressed by blacks in any way. They never have been, and no amount of b.s. out of context tapes will make it so.

Get your facts straight before believing what you're told and quit allowing places like HuffPo and others to lather you up about race.

Andrew Breitbart: I Released Sherrod Tape To Discredit The NAACP

"...Breitbart admitted that his “journalism” had a naked political agenda. That didn't seem to give Hannity any pause. How about the rest of the media?

Not surprisingly, Sean Hannity jumped on this story. He's ever eager to accuse black people of racism and ever tolerant of those who are bigoted against blacks. Maybe that's why he never mentioned all the dissembling Breitbart did on Hannity last year with regard to the ACORN videos..."

I said as much last night in the first Shirley Sharrod thread, that Fox/Breitbart were targeting the NAACP with Sharrod as a scapegoat. All the race rage on Fox, KKK, stormfront, CofCC, VDARE, FAIR, etc will never take down the NAACP. So I'm not sure what made Breitbart think he was so special.

Never trust Andrew Breitbart
by Kate Conway

"...The latest Andrew-Breitbart-manufactured phony scandal is just one more nail in the coffin of Breitbart's already dismal credibility.

Breitbart was the first to post video falsely suggesting that Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod had discriminated against a white farmer -- allegations that are rapidly unraveling as they churn through the media.

The fact that Breitbart's poorly researched accusations are falling apart should be no surprise to those familiar with his handiwork..."

I saw Breitbart on one of the morning shows trying to excuse his actions. I couldn't help myself and had to flip over to the 3 Monkeys Morning Show (Fox & Friends) and Steve Doucheb@gz was trying to backpedal away from that story so fast, it was almost comical. That show is full of nothing but haters and I don't understand how they get their ratings. That woman is just a total ditz.

I would sue Fox for this. Sue the pants off of them for defamation. Sue Brietbart. Make him find out what "doctoring" a video will get for you in the punitive forum.

They appeal to a very specific audience and Fox feeds it what they want to hear and that justifies their hatred for this President and his policies. They hate him even when those policies are in their best interest.
