Tea Party Group's Chief Spokesman Mark Williams RESIGNS After NAACP Controversy

The Tea Party Express has accepted the resignation of former embattled spokesperson Mark Williams.

WASHINGTON — The Tea Party Express has accepted the resignation of its chief spokesmen after he was widely condemned for satirizing the NAACP as an organization led by "Tom's nephew" and "head colored person."

In a letter released Friday by the Tea Party Express, conservative radio personality Mark Williams told the organization he wanted to break ties with the group so "the media and our domestic enemies" would move past the episode. Williams resigned as chairman of the group last month after one of his blog posts forced the National Tea Party Federation to expel the Tea Party Express.

The resignation as chairman was not enough to quiet the criticism, though. A complete cut was required, Williams wrote.

"We are in a war for the future of this country and the left and their allies in the news media have decided to use my personal comments and views as a weapon to injure the tea party movement and conservative activists," Williams wrote. "I am going to continue to fight on the side of liberty but it is clear that doing so with any affiliation with the Tea Party Express is not the best way to do so."

Williams' fiery blog post on July 15 criticized the NAACP and its president, Benjamin Todd Jealous. Williams said it was satire; the NAACP said the post was more evidence tea party activists condoned racism.

The tea party – thousands of community groups that promote limited government, free markets and other conservative and Libertarian principles – has resisted any notion of centralized control. That has opened itself to criticism when individuals make offensive comments.

At its meeting earlier this month, the NAACP approved a resolution calling on activists and others to "repudiate the racist element and activities" within the tea party movement.

Williams countered that the NAACP itself was racist.

This moment in history will certainly go down as a period not good for minorities. What we thought would be a great period in our history with the election of our first black President, we now see has brought out all the previously unspoken prejudices and racist attitudes of some people. From this racist attitude sprung the Tea Party claiming it suspiciously and suddenly wanted the country to correct its decades long history of fiscal overspending and cut the size of government. They claimed we needed a president like President Reagan with his tax cut philosophy, but ignored or were ignorant of the fact of his deficit spending and tax increases. They happily latched onto people like Palin, Beck, and Limbaugh who indirectly spoke of racism by attacking the President even before he took his oath of office. FOX News, advertising itself as being "Fair and Balanced", helped or maybe even was responsible for launching the Tea Party. And now we're seeing false and manufactured evidence of reverse racism from people and news organizations, like FOX News, who after being caught promoting false accusations come out the next day either being suspiously silent, or playing the victim.

This is a period in our history I'm not proud of being a part of. I'm not ashamed, but proud to be called a "liberal" if for not only to disassociates me with people like Palin, Beck, and Limbaugh. How much longer is our country going to fall prey to these fear mongerers?

Like a child, the Tea Party is poking the fence to find out what the limits of racist and outrageous positions are. Let them continue to paint their own image. Let us, ordinary and decent citizens, continue to rise and hammer into dust blatantly racist comments and positions.

Am beginning to think we all need to pull out our poodle skirts from storage and turn in our stilettos for saddle oxfords. Perhaps we are virtually living Back to the Future.

Funny how his resignation came after the NAACP accused the Tea Party of racism. In typical sleazeball tactics they claim they are not racist, then blame the NAACP for accusing them of being racist and then push out their Chief Spokesman for being, wait for it, wait for it, A Racist!!!!!

Exactly. It took his letter he wrote to put the nail in the coffin where they saw how he was cut instead of seeing it earlier.

domestic enemies? war in our country? wonder what the response of many of these folks would be if the draft were declared tomorrow and they had to face the realities of going to a real war that many of our folks have died fighting or are fighting? they love to talk their paranoia, conspiracy, and fear propaganda to make themselves the leaders of a movement going nowhere.
