Jeb Bush's Rand Paul Fundraiser Awkwardly Takes Place On Anniversary Of Disability Act

Governors Race Brady

When former Florida Governor Jeb Bush hosts a fundraiser on behalf of Senate candidate Rand Paul on Monday it will symbolize, in more ways than one, the uncomfortable union of opposite poles of Republican ideology. Bush's brand of pragmatic conservatism stands in contrast to Paul's Tea Party temperament. The Kentucky Republican, likewise, often touts his independence from the GOP, citing the antiquated Republicanism of the Bush clan as an example.

And so it seems almost appropriate that the two would team up, of all days, on the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

ADA, which made it illegal for employers to discriminate against the disabled, was a signature piece of domestic legislation for Jeb's father, former president George H.W. Bush, and not merely because Congress forced it down his throat. The 41st president pledged his commitment to the bill starting with his acceptance speech at the Republican Convention. "I am going to do whatever it takes to make sure the disabled are included in the mainstream," he said.

Indeed, when the legislation was celebrating its 19th anniversary, last year, the elder Bush put out a statement, congratulating President Obama "for taking some time today" to commemorate its significance.

"We can all take pride in how much the ADA has accomplished, which is evident every time you attend a sporting event, ride the subway, or go to work," the statement read.

Then there is Paul. The Tea Party candidate caused a stir the day after winning the Republican primary when he wavered on saying whether he would have supported landmark civil rights legislation had he been in office at the time. Tucked away in that same interview was a similar question about ADA. Did the legislation go too far, asked NPR's Robert Siegel.

"I think a lot of things could be handled locally," Paul said. "For example, I think that we should try to do everything we can to allow for people with disabilities and handicaps... I think if you have a two-story office and you hire someone who's handicapped, it might be reasonable to let him have an office on the first floor rather than the government saying you have to have a $100,000 elevator. And I think when you get to solutions like that, the more local the better, and the more common sense the decisions are, rather than having a federal government make those decisions."

It stands to reason that Paul's skepticism about the reach of ADA won't be a major topic of discussion when Jeb helps usher in $500 to $2,400 fundraisers. An invitation for the event, obtained by the Huffington Post, shows that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) will also be in attendance.

But that doesn't mean the topic won't be discussed at all. Paul's opponent in the Senate race, Attorney General Jack Conway, is hosting a press event at the state's capitol to mark ADA's 20th anniversary. Asked to preview the event, Conway's press secretary, Allison Haley, said the candidate didn't have prepared remarks. But, she added, "Jeb Bush is certainly on our radar screen today."

I wonder if Paul expects this hypothetical "disabled folks work on the first floor" company to hold their board meetings on the 1st floor if and when a disabled person moves into upper management. I guess Paul is in favor of glass ceilings for the disabled. This particularly rankles me, as I am disabled. I can walk up stairs, no problem, but the guy in the wheelchair has more in common with me than I do with Rand Paul.

Rand Paul and others like him seem to really want to do away with the United States. They harp on and on about "States Rights" and how all these different issues are better left to the "States" to decide. We are the United States and we do have a Federal Government and people like Rand Paul just need to get used to it.

Liberals are against state's rights until the feds do something the liberals don't like such as raiding medical marijuana clinics authorized under state law or interfering with state governments implementing assisted-suicide laws. Then they scream about state's rights, and rightfully so, but the hypocrisy is hilarious.

Conservatives have been opposed to states rights ever since the Union took away your right to own people. The states rights controversy is aimed at one day returning to those halcyon days where a white man could own a black man and conservatives can rest happily. And you know it.

Either we are a nation or not, you cannot have both any more than be slightly pregnant. Thanks to state rights child predators can move from state to state since each has its own rules, laws, and most importantly, their own way of tracking people through driver's licenses and other official documents.

strictly reading what's in this article, Paul is saying it should be up to the local government, rather than the fed's dictating solutions on how to help the handicapped get around. So it's not like he is against handicapped people, just debating how best to help them. I disagree with Rand, it's good we have a national law which mandates accomodations for the handicapped. And who's to say the ADA wouldn't allow an employer to work out a first-floor arrangement for this hypothetical worker?

As much as I detest the Rands and the Shrubberies this really is a STRRRRRRRETCH trying to turn this anniversary thing into 'news'.
Please do not tell us what we should be irate or upset about. I know that journalism thinks that is it's job nowadays, but really -- don't!

Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed,
Then one day he was shootin at some food,
And up through the ground came a bubblin' crude.

Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.

Well the first thing you know ol' Jed's a millionaire,
Kinfolk said Jed move away from there
Said Californy is the place you ought to be
So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly.

Hills, that is.
Swimmin pools, movie stars.

The Beverly Hillbillies!

"...at the home of D. Talmadge Hocker" (first name must be something not-nearly-preppy-enough, like Donald)...Who wants to bet that Mrs. Hocker's name is Muffy?

Love it -- Tom Wolfe himself couldn't invent a better old-south-fatcat-conservative name if he worked on it for a week.

WRONG!

They should be prosecuted under our RICO laws.
Then, offered up to the World Court for war crimes prosecution.
But, under no circumstances should they be deported.

Of course they back a party 90% of the teabaggers are the same republicans who elected Bush!!
It's a name change nothing more. Republican power brokers are using the same uninformed and misinformed people they used to elect GW Bush twice.

the tea party is a lot of individuals so this in no way supported by every tea partier, I can assure you.

In Rand Paul and Jeb Bush's world....the "have's" don't have to accommodate or even acknowledge the existence of the "have-not's". They both grew up with a silver spoon in their mouth, an Ivy League Education and a marriage to the "right kind of girl". Their exposure to people with physical challenges was very limited because one had to be very wealthy and successful to even be included in their snobby circle of friends.
So is it any wonder that their sense of entitlement and elitism extends to the world at large? They have no problem spending lavishly on themselves but morph into financial misers when it comes to investing in their own country or provide a safe environment for their employees.
It reminds me of the slumlords infecting most major cities, who are more than happy to collect rent from people forced to live in squalid conditions because of their level of poverty and property owners who refuse to spend a dime cleaning up their slums.

Your characterization of Rand as cold-hearted and miserly is misplaced.

---------------------------------------

In 1995, Rand founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic, an organization that provides eye exams and surgery to needy families and individuals. Rand is a former president and 17 year member of Lions Clubs International, which is dedicated to preserving sight by providing eyeglasses and surgery to the less fortunate around the world. In recognition of his outstanding and sustained efforts to provide vision care to Kentuckians in need, Lions Clubs International has awarded Rand many of its highest commendations, including:

â– Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services, Lions Club International Foundation
â– Lion of the Year Award, Bowling Green Lions
■President’s Award, Bowling Green Lions
â– Fines E. Davis Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Service, Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation
â– Governors Appreciation Award for Sight Conservation, Lions Club International

In addition to his work with the Lions Clubs, Dr. Paul has provided free eye surgery to children from around the world through his participation in the Children of the Americas Program.

A large part of Rand’s daily work is dedicated to preserving the vision of our seniors. In 2002, The Twilight Wish Foundation recognized Rand for Outstanding Service and Commitment to Seniors.

Yeah, let's just forget his talk about dismantling civil and human rights. I mean, who cares if black folk can use bathrooms or drink from fountains or go to private schools or live where they choose.

Unless you are black, of course.
05:51 AM on 07/27/2010
"provided eye surgery to children from around the world".

One thing that you DON'T want -- and fortunately, most hospitals agree -- is a surgeon who is not board-certified to practice as a surgeon. And Rand Paul isn't. He is doing the world no favors.

His logic is a bit off...if it were handled "locally" no one would hire that handicapped person because it would cost them an arm and a leg to give them that mobility, however if it was mandated the disabled person wouldn't have to worry about the employer worrying about that because he has already paid for it in advance and therefore will be more likely to hire said disabled person.
11:54 AM on 07/27/2010
ummm...he just said it would be less expensive if handled locally so actually the federal laws are more damaging to the employment of disabled people. They are still discriminated against even with this federal "oversight."

No whats more damaging is if the employee doesn't already have the suitable equipment to help disabled persons because then there's a clear disincentive to hire such person.

actually, may be not, since a lot of people are fed up with the republicans and democrats, seeing someone who is willing to stand up for state's rights, local government, and a smaller, fiscally conservative federal government would be a real "change we can believe in." The problem is bush was not fiscally conservative at all, he ran up record deficits as well as expanding federal government uncontrollably. We have to look at government like our households, we can't spend over our incomes without repercussions and neither can the federal government!

i notice that people who don't want to hurt the republicans feelings. when they no theirs huge problems with them even thinking of running our country. they say a lot of people are fed up with-and then they lump republicans in with democrats. but totally not true democrats have been trying to pass good laws and get something functionaly done. but the party of NO!! is really in the way of progress once again not helping so it's the republicans only saying NO NO AND NO!!!
