Target Homophobia? CEO Gregg Steinhafel Defends $150K Donation To Anti-Gay Politician, LGBT Community Angered

Target

A campaign contribution to a well-known anti-gay politician in Minnesota has become a rather large public relations nightmare for Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel--and the store now faces boycotts and backlash from the gay community.

Target's Chief Executive Steinhafel said gay employees have been concerned about the money helping state Rep. Tom Emmer, who opposes gay marriage. Target gave $150,000 to MN Forward, a group staffed by former insiders from outgoing Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty's administration. MN Forward is running TV ads supporting Emmer.

The Associated Press reports that Emmer is a fiery conservative who lauds Arizona's strict approach to illegal immigration, once advocated chemical castration for sex offenders and wants to lower taxes. His profile contrasts with Target's moderate image in Minnesota, where the company is known for donating to public school programs, food pantries and the annual Twin Cities Gay Pride Festival.

Following the money trail, the Minnesota Independent has also linked Emmer to a Minnesota Christian "punk-rock ministry" that supports the killing of gays and lesbians.

Learning that Target would lend financial support to someone like Emmer angered many LGBT shoppers and gay rights supporters. The Human Rights Campaign, which previously gave Target a 100 percent approval rating for their treatment of LGBT employees, issued this statement Monday:

"Target has worked hard to create a fair and equitable workplace for its LGBT employees, and should be proud of its leadership in this area. It is for this reason that HRC is very disappointed in Target's significant monetary contribution to Minnesota Forward, a group supporting the most clearly anti-LGBT candidate for Governor in Minnesota. We have reached out to Target to express our concern over this contribution. While political contributions to support candidates are not a factor in HRC Foundation's Corporate Equality Index, HRC finds it puzzling that Target would take great steps to support LGBT inclusiveness while simultaneously helping a candidate who shamelessly rejects equality for LGBT Minnesotans."

In an email to Target staff, Steinhafel responded to the criticism.

"We rarely endorse all advocated positions of the organizations or candidates we support, and we do not have a political or social agenda," Steinhafel wrote. "As you know, Target has a history of supporting organizations and candidates, on both sides of the aisle, who seek to advance policies aligned with our business objectives, such as job creation and economic growth...Let me be very clear, Target's support of the GLBT community is unwavering, and inclusiveness remains a core value of our company." (Read Steinhafel's full response here.)

Meanwhile, some gay rights advocates are considering a boycott of Target over the ordeal. In Chicago, openly-gay state Rep. Greg Harris, who celebrated a Target opening in his district last week, told ChicagoPride.com he hopes Target will rethink their support of Emmer.

"Companies like Target need to understand that they can't have it both ways when it comes to issues of our basic rights, and that the facts will eventually come out. I hope that they will rethink this contribution and find a way to make it right," Harris said.

A Facebook group dedicated to boycotting Target has also gained momentum.

Money from Target's top executives has gone mainly to Republicans. Former Chief Executive Officer Robert Ulrich, who retired last year, gave $617,000 during his time as Target's leader, most of it to the state GOP. Current Chief Executive Gregg Steinhafel has donated about $25,000, almost exclusively to Republican candidates and causes, including at least $1,000 to Michele Bachmann's "Victory Committee."

Some times it's better not to say anything, than to try and defend yourself Mr. Steinhafel. Basically Target cares more about how a canidate with treat it from a fiscal point, than it does its employees and customers from a human rights point. Profits before dignity. Sorry, I thought you made an honest mistake, now you are telling me it was a calculated decision. You lost my business.

With the recent revelations about some of our biggest corporations and the political views of those who hold power in those companies, it is time for a movement similar to the Move Your Money campaign which is getting people to switch their banking needs to local banks and credit unions.

Let's REALLY support small business and start shopping locally from those businesses that support progressive values.

Anyone who participated in the whole foods and organic movements over the past 40 years knows the power of perseverance of mundane, daily purchasing to create big change. As a dabbler in such, the Target money has reawakened that flame in me. I'm sure Mr. Steinhafel just won't be able to get around it with half measures and lies.

That T. didn't draw the line at a "Pro-business (sic)" candidate who ALSO endorsed murderous rhetoric (as did the entirety of MN's GOP both in cash and convention space for the hate rock ministry) is wrong. That violent fuse is also my fuse, and many other LGBT people feel the same...and it's the reason why S's explanation doesn't fly. Can "we don't agree with them on everything" be acceptable to anyone with the memory of Matthew Shepard and 1000s of others fresh in our minds?

All of which to say that in the past 5 weeks I'm back at the farmer's market, planning to expand my home garden into the fall and add new space in the spring, back in the local hardware store, buying specialty goods at fine shops in Louisville (we're fortunate to have a vibrant local base of shops though it is largely eroded). I have one big box retailer left to me right now...Costco...and I am watching them closely. In the future, if disclose laws fail consumers need to stay out of "The Box."

To CEO Gregg Steinhafel,

To CEO Gregg Steinhafel:
Do you have any associates on your staff responsible for investigating groups you are going to contribute moneys to before you take that step? Did you ask the stockholders if they approve of the decision to contribute to this group? It sounds like you missed a few steps in the process and made a unilateral decision that will come back and bite you in your corporate a**. Here's to you next career working for minimum wage.

As you know, Target, you can't have it both ways. You can't support AND not support gay issues.

It would be one thing if the ceo himself had donated, but that the company donated money - thanks Citizens United.

No Wal*mart, no Target, no Best Buy. Fine by me. Kmart removed the sale of bullets when they were pressured by Michael Moore and a victim of the Columbine shooting. Kmart, at least you try to do something responsible. Thank goodness there are still some stores open that I can patronize.

Don't let corporations buy the candidates. It will screw all of us non-multimillionaires.

This is great, could not have come at a better time. My family is planning two big purchases, a mini-fridge and a bigger television, and now I can make sure we take our business to Target. Thanks HP for being so informative!

Yeh, just be sure and stay away from Target's also-ran TV models. ;-) I had to take back 2 Visio TVs that were pixel-challenged and wound up buying a much newer Visio model that wasn't an also-ran at a better store.

Good luck to all the conservatives in making the difference for Target...it's your money, after all...it'll be fun to analyze how Target's marketing changes if it's determined to go it without one of its key demographics and if Bubba saves the day. It will also be fun to track T.'s attempt to expand to urban locations in SF and Chicago continue in the coming months and years .

Come on, Target, you can't say that your support of gay rights is unwavering and then financially support a candidate who opposes gay rights.

I've heard some ridiculous hyperbole over the last few days about Target - but this is the best. Yup, a few hundred wackjobs are gonna kill an entire chain. For every one liberal who boycotts, there will be many, many conservatives like me who go out of their way to support them. You're deluded.

Steinhafel gives the best reason yet why Citizens United is a bogus Constitutional decision: Target donates to candidates who are concerned about the economy and "job creation".

By that I take it that this corporation - like ALL corporations - is only going to support a candidate based on one concern: MONEY. What about: foreign policy? climate change? energy? education? science? etc etc etc

If you are a citizen, the ALL of the above and more are relevant to your decision of who to support and to vote for. If you are a corporation, you have only ONE concern. How is THIS advancing the good of the nation and its citizens?

Ok I'm in Arkansas, homestate of Walmart. I am gay. I have a strong distrust of Walmart.

Little Rock is a strange place where the main major central part of the city is not served by any big boxes. (Maybe this is a blessing in disguise.) Target is finally putting a store a 2 minute drive from my house, 5 minutes from downtown. I have been excited about this, but now I'm mildly concerned. Either I go to the world's largest corp based in Arkansas who I distrust, or I go to the homophobes. Meh. I'm going to start a garden and make my own clothes.

In Louisville, which I've found to be pretty similar to Little Rock, we have a handful of pretty good vintage/consignment options, and Target is right on the periphery of what amounts to the "hippest" part of town (there's a Wal-Mart right next door to them). I've found that I can do without them quite well just by returning to my local hardware/garden store and scattering household purchases (cleaning supplies, etc.) over several merchants. I do use Costco for beverages and a electronics, but they do a pretty good job currently IMO.

I buy more and more off of Ebay and this is why. They are building a new Target in my town which is a liberal part of California. This media is really going to hurt them I was going to buy a camera for my son at Target. Now, I'll be shopping again at Ebay or Best Buy. Target better straighten this out. I'm not even gay but I do not believe in any type of discrimination against law abiding citizens. Or deny human rights to anyone.
