A slew of great white shark sightings over the past few weeks on Cape Cod has scared swimmers in the height of summer vacation time, according to Reuters.

"Swimmers should exercise caution while swimming in Chatham's ocean waters," the harbor master's office said on Chatham's website.

The town "is strongly suggesting that beach-goers and swimmers pay close attention to their surroundings while in the water, and to not venture too far from shore. If a shark is sighted, please get out of the water." Duh.

On Friday, swimmers on Salisbury Beach north of Boston were warned of a possible shark sighting; on Tuesday, a great white shark was tagged off of Cape Cod's Chatham.
On Friday, swimmers at Salisbury Beach north of Boston were ordered to stay close to shore for a few hours after a fisherman reported a possible shark sighting.

"Jaws," the movie that scared us all, was, coincidentally, filmed off of nearby Martha's Vineyard.

If the sharks' seasonal food sources are dwindling it may be natural to search for other sources of prey...

Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's just too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

Great Whites do not circle their prey like other sharks. They have no known predators so they simply charge straight for their prey.

Darn it! This was the week I was going to launch my new Chumscreen product--a combination chum and sunscreen to save the trouble of remembering to pack both. All this fear-mongering is going to set me back years.

With all this talk about bears and sharks, I have to say that I'm actually glad there are things out there that can eat us. It's one of the few things left that keeps us humble as a species.

There is a creature alive, today. It has survived millions of years of evolution, without change, without passion, and without logic. It lives to kill; a mindless eating machine. It will attack and devour anything. It is as if God created the Devil and gave him JAWS. - Opening line of the theatrical trailer.

they are sharks. And they do live in the ocean. We are the visitors.

The funny thing is to see them asking people to be "cautious" while in the water. I think that at the moment anyone decides to swim in a an ocean full of great white sharks, the word cautions doesn't mean much...
TheBear   10:34 PM on 7/29/2010
they used to have these warnings daily when I was a kid vacationing on Long Island, but the sharks were way off sore 200 or more feet, so they were not a real threat

that's only 67 yards. probably only one or two seconds for one of these to travel that distance.

Thank goodness there are still some in the water. No thanks to humans and their r@pe of the environment.
Morgantheaxe   03:38 AM on 7/30/2010
Ok, Im a conservative when it comes to the environment (not the modern definition but the Teddy Roosevelt definition as in for conservation) when i see posts like yours I just have to ask ya what is an acceptable lifestyle for humans. I mean be specific...not live green etc.... Do we close down all steel plants? Do we go back to periods of no electricity? Im serious what do you folks want as an end solution? I want to protect the environment but when 60+ percent of our current electical production is from coal burning power plants I am a realist. I know we will not be able to fix this over night. I welcome anyone that wants to put us on a path to cleaner living but Id say you and I feel very differently about human beings. I am looking for more like minded people that want to make real change that is implementable today for a cleaner tomorrow. Please, be people that understand world politics and the global economy though. Otherwise we are just wasting our time. I will say this though. With an emerging middle class in China that will make our consumption look like we are frugal we had better get busy leading the way to cleaner packaging etc.

try investing in green technology. we had electric cars 30 years ago but the car and oil companies killed that project.

Dang, sharks off Nauset Beach.
Remember, if you punch a shark reeeel hard smack on the nose, it 'might' turn tail.
They got sensitive noses that they need to sniff with.
