Nail Polish Names: Which Is Most Ridiculous? (PHOTOS, POLL)

First Posted: 07/29/2010 4:52 pm   Updated: 05/25/2011 5:10 pm

It seems like nail polish has been on every fashionista's mind lately--with new, "Mad Men"-inspired lacquers to Rodarte's unfortunately-named Juarez color, which sparked a controversy and subsequent apology. We got to thinking about the hues we paint our tips and rounded up 15 of the most dubiously-dubbed nail polishes. Take a look and tell us which names are the most ridiculous. Warning: graphic language ahead. Really.

These kind of advertisements work! All I want to do now is paint my nails and live up to the name's expectation.

I thought Palin should open a...
Nail Salon with shades called:
Blood of Christ, Red,
Crown of Thorns, Burgundy,
and Tears of God, Blue.

These nail polish names may be ridiculous, but what’s even more ridiculous is the fact that under current law nail polish can contain toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate (i.e. the toxic trio). These chemicals are linked to cancer, birth defects, and infertility. So while these polish names may be cute and catchy, nail polish containing these chemicals pose a real threat to your manicurist’s health (not to mention your own). Check out this great video about the chemical exposures nail salon workers face every day and then take action by supporting the Safe Cosmetics Act, a bill that requires ingredients in salon and retail cosmetic products to be assessed for safety BEFORE allowed for use in products. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

Naughty Nailz does not contain these chemicals. Thankfully, many mainstream brands are using new formulas that do not contain these chemicals. Pressure on the manufacturers from the consumers will continue to help make the cosmetics safer.

Hey - my gf wears some of those and to be quite honest they look great! Especially up in the air.

Not only are the names strange, but some of the colors are ugly.

I still think that there should be a nail polish color coming out of Viet Nam called Come Here Rouge.

LMAO!!

Here's another suggestion (which was also the funniest porn movie title I'd ever heard of):

The Courtship of Eddie's Finger

along these same lines, the old-time haircolor company Roux still has a shade called Pretty Beaver.

and here are some of the funnier Roux haircolors:
Frivolous Fawn
Just Peachy
Blue Mood
Hidden Honey
Tantalizing Titian
Subtle Slate

"Queen of Everything" OPI for Sephora. A great smooth silver gray. Elegant and I love the name.

My wife uses OPI for almost all her nail needs expressly because of the clever names (plus, they are apparently a great product). OPI's names are always clever, not tasteless like some of the others on the list. It's a marketing strategy that works - she's got like 20 different bottles of OPI, and an OPI supply case that she got to put them in!

OPI started this trend...and they are still the best at coming up with fun names!

Outrageous names...true...
One by OPI...called Royal Rajah or someting, I use it on my toes, lasts longer, girls got to try that...I get my nails don then use it for touch ups works for me.

As an unabashed nail polish aficionado, I wouldn't exactly describe the outré names as "ridiculous". It's actually quite savvy marketing that has probably helped brands like OPI gain popularity and increase revenue. Furthermore, there's only so many 'normal' ways to label varying hues of blue, red, etc.

IMO, Naughty Nailz definitely takes the cake for eccentric entitling; they have one product called "12 Inch Gang Bang". LOL. Here is a great blog dedicated to "stu.pid nail polish names":

A couple of my favorite inexpensive lines are Essie and China Glaze because they often produce quality collections. However, nothing compares to Chanel's Le Vernis Nail Colour; smooth application with gorgeous shades. Well-worth the price.
