Obama's 'The View' Debut: President Blasts Media Over Shirley Sherrod Firing

NEW YORK (AP)-- President Barack Obama said Thursday that the racial firestorm that led to the ouster of a black Agriculture Department official was a "phony controversy" generated by the media. He said his administration overreacted by forcing her out.

In an interview on ABC's daytime talk show "The View," Obama said the forced resignation of Shirley Sherrod shows racial tensions still exist in America."There are still inequalities out there. There's still discrimination out there," Obama said. "But we've made progress."

Sherrod was forced to resign after a conservative website posted an edited video of her speaking about race. Sherrod said the video took her remarks out of context. When her full remarks were discovered, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack apologized and offered Sherrod a new job at the department.

Obama pinned much of the blame for the incident on a media culture that he said seeks out conflict and doesn't always get the facts right. But he added, "A lot of people overreacted, including people in my administration."

The Sherrod incident added another wrinkle to an administration already burdened by the slow pace of the economic recovery, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the Gulf oil spill. While acknowledging that the country has gone through a tough stretch since he took office, Obama said he remains optimistic about the direction the U.S. is headed.

"What has been satisfying is just seeing how resilient the American people are," he said.

Obama's interview with "The View" was the first appearance on a daytime talk show by a sitting president. The wide-ranging interview also dipped into Obama's knowledge of pop culture, an area he showed some proficiency, admitting that he knows actress Lindsey Lohan is in jail.

But he skirted a question about whether actor Mel Gibson should go to anger management classes, joking that he'd rather answer a question about the war in Afghanistan. And when asked about "Snooki," a character on the MTV reality show "Jersey Shore," Obama pleaded ignorance.

But perhaps the biggest revelation was that the blackberry Obama fought so hard to keep at the start of his presidency hasn't turned out to be that much after all. Because his e-mail traffic could be subject to eventual requests for disclosure, Obama said the 10 people who have his coveted e-mail address are cautious with their messages.

"Nobody wants to send me the real juicy stuff," he said. "It's all very official."

Is this the same guy that sits there and blasts certain media outlets for not vetting 'facts' and stands hand in hand in the Rose Garden with a convicted felon that nobody knew was a convicted felon until after the fact???

I love the GOPs reaction to all things Obama. The best example of family values possibly in my lifetime. Who is their paragon? The Palins could do reality/Jerry Springer but they aren't safe for daytime. I agree with Jon Stewart, President Obama can't win. They don't want him to. They want the country to burn so they can blame him. It's a great example of the break down of respect for anything in this country.

“Watch her 43:15 speech on the NAACP's website: http://www.naacp.org/news/entry/video_sherrod/

There was NOTHING taken out of context by the media. I've quoted the first part of her speech below:

"Now, I grew up on a farm and didn't want anything to do with agriculture, but she (?) was right! There are jobs at USDA. And many times there are no people of color to fill those jobs cause we shy away from agriculture . . . we here the word agriculture we think only of working in the field. You heard of a lot of layoffs, have you heard of anybody in the Federal Government loosing their jobs? (Audience laughs) That's all I need to say."

What a piece of work. I can agree with Obama in one sense . . . she fits his bill for government employment.

"... Why did they hire me in the first place if they didn't believe in what I had done up to this point?" She confessed in the July 22, CNN interview, that she'd spent her career at USDA working hard for "minority farmers." Racism indeed.

Can someone here please explain to me what qualifed Obama to be POTUS? Was he ever in charge of anything? Was he ever responsible for any kind of payroll - did he ever run a city, state, small business, lemonade stand - anything? If he did, he would understand that the policies he has proposed are not going to get us out of this recession -you can give all of the tax breaks/incentives to small businesses, but, businesses have no clue what is going to come next from this administration, and they have to be ready for the punitive taxes, etc. from this administration. "Tax the rich - well, who do you think does the hiring of people - people on welfare?" Wake up, America!!! I hope Obama gets four more years in addition to what is left on his first term - sometimes you have got to hit rock bottom before you rise to the top....

why should the president be worried about some goofy character on TV? I don't care to know who she is either.

The view is staffed by spoiled, uneducated suburban know nothings. Obumble gets an easy interview and tons of support from the dumbest people on the planet. This doesnt say much about his administration.

BLASTS? There is the perfect example of one of the biggest media problems we have. I saw the show, which by the way I have not watched since Rosie left and they didn't get rid of the blond. I forget her name. Anyway, if the media wants to see what getting blasted really means, give me a call. I'll be ready to go at a moments notice.

Kathleen, we must have watched a different show because I certainly didn't hear him blast the media either. He pointed out that they had jumped the gun, along with others, before checking their facts.
Blasted?? They never stood at attention in front of a US Army officer and got an a** chewing or they would understand the difference.

I forgot to record this, so it was good to see it here. While I sometimes wish the President had the ability to wave his wand & erase the calamities of the first decade of the final century of the second millenium of the common era, and I sometimes get impatient with the slow pace of change, I am once again reminded why I voted for this man.

Good policy doesn't necessarily immediately affect the short term; conversely, bad policy can look good in the short term while having disastrous effects in the long run. It is good to have someone in office with the eye on the prize--not the prize of re-election, but the prize of policies that are good for the American people. ALL American people.

I think it's unlikely they actually talked to the president about this before the firing. Seems to me with his level head, he might have had other advice and it wouldn't have happened. Plus, everyone involved said the president was not consulted.
12:00 PM on 08/03/2010
So you believe the President is consulted on all hiring and firing within the Federal Government?
01:16 AM on 07/31/2010
i thought President was excellent, I wished someone would have asked him about the Elizabeth Warren nomination however- Duh.

I've been frustrated and impatient as of late and I have to admit he did a tremendous job making factual and valid points even Spiritual in nature. Highlights "everyone is connected in some fashion" "I’m less interested in how we label ourselves , I’m more interested in how we treat each other." "I think frankly the American people frankly would rather hear a civil debate but that’s not what they are getting a lot of the times" "The country has gone through a tough stretch. Since I took office, when I was sworn in,we were losing 750,000 jobs a month, The economy was shrinking at a pace of about 6.5% which his unheard of since the Great Depression" "

"So the last 20 months has been a non-stop effort to restart the economy, to stabilize
the financial system, to make sure that we are creating jobs instead of losing them. And
in the midst of that we’ve also had the oil spill, we’ve also had two wars, we’ve also
had a Pandenmic, H1N1 that we had to manage and a whole host of other issues.".
