The Dish On The 'Eat, Pray, Love' Cast Dinner At Thomas Keller's French Laundry

Eat Pray Love Cast Dinner French Laundry

The cast of the upcoming film Eat, Pray, Love enjoyed an intimate dinner last night at Thomas Keller's renowned The French Laundry in Napa, following the week's press junkets in the area. Sony Pictures executives Amy Pascal, and Marc Weinstock were in attendance, along with cast members Julia Roberts, Javier Bardem, Billy Crudup and Richard Jenkins, along with film Producer DeDe Gardner, and Director Ryan Murphy.

The group of 20 started with a canapé reception and led to a 7-course tasting menu put together by Keller and and Chef de Cuisine Timothy Hollingsworth (the 2010 James Beard Award winner for Rising Chef of the Year), which featured The French Laundry's famous "Oysters and Pearls" dish and their "Coffee & Doughnuts" dessert.

The only curious inclusion was a Sautéed Fillet of Atlantic Halibut dish. Atlantic Halibut (even wild-caught) is classified as "Avoid" by the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch and as an "Eco-Worst Choice" by the Environmental Defense Fund for being "extremely depleted." The French Laundry is a bit closer to the Pacific, whose Halibut happen to be classified as "Best Choice." It should be noted that Keller is otherwise one of the most thoughtful chefs in the country if not the world for the quality and level of sustainability of the ingredients he uses in his myriad restaurants -- many through direct relationships with some of the best farmers in the country.

Below is the menu for The French Laundry's Eat, Pray, Love dinner along with photos of two of the signature dishes.

Chef Keller is the most gracious person I've ever met. A couple of years ago, I had an appointment with his IT director and was early, so I sat in their otherwise unoccupied beautiful garden to wait. It was a hot day. In about ten minutes, Chef Keller appeared with a tray. On the tray was a cold bottle of imported water and silver saucer holding a chilled glass. Chef Keller poured me a glass of water and left. That was definitely the most memorable glass of water I will ever have.

There appears to be no praying or loving taking place. Of course, lots of food is just fine by me!

If you've never had the "coffee & donuts", its a must!! I had a version of it at the Kansas City Country Club several years ago and its my most favorite dessert of all time. Just found the recipe on-line and will attempt soon.

My husband and I went to French Laundry while we were on our honeymoon almost 9 years ago. It remains one of the best food experiences of my life. I still think about their signature "oysters and pearls" dish! It was divine! We haven't gone to Per Se yet....but it is on my list!

Oh how I love their sister restaurant, Per se. Will definitely have to make a trip to Napa one day just to dine here.

I made the poor choice to read this while I sit at my office desk, munching on a dull ham on rye sandwich. I wouldn't mind Keller popping by my cubicle and dishing me some of these scrumptious menu items! And I cannot wait to see "Eat, Pray, Love"!
