Gap 'Put Some Pants On' Ad: Offensive Or Clever? (PHOTOS, POLL)

First Posted: 08/02/2010 8:03 am Updated: 05/25/2011 5:15 pm

It seems like brutal honesty is in for fall, even in the windows of the stores encouraging you to spend your money. Journalist Stephanie Marcus came across Gap's new ads for its pants and jeans sale, which read, "Put Some Pants On! Because We All Can't Look Good In Shorts." Take a look:

Another window's more subtle advertisement:

And, as Marcus points out, "What's even funnier is that in another window, GAP is advertising for their Jeggings and not everyone looks good in those either, but as long as GAP can sell them to you they don't really care."

The ad isn't in all stores, but we did spot it in several locations across Manhattan. So what do you think?

Quick Poll

Gap's new ad:

Offensive!

Clever!

Although I have decent, muscular legs? I prefer to keep them covered with jeans or a pair of pants. The only time I wear short pants is if the outside temperature climbs over 90 degrees...and I have to be outside for some reason.

But, that's just me.

NEWSFLASH: Some peoples bodies do not look good in certain clothes, period. There are clothes I cannot wear as a petite woman, they're are clothes larger people can't wear well. Things complement specific body styles.
Offensive- no.
Truthful yes.

If I try to wear loose clothing I look like a rectangle or a 12 year old.

I'm not entirely sure how this can be construed as offensive... I for one am someone who absolutely acknowledges her inability to pull off shorts.

They should loop the Pants of the Ground song in the stores too. That would be clever.

If anyone is offended by this ad they are in need of some theropy. Besides, this notion that it's a serious crime to offend someone is way out of hand. Who cares? There is always someone going to be offended by something. As long as you're not being disrespectful or bigotted I say offend away.

I searched to find another mention of this of this "offensive" ad and so far this page is the lead result. Great non-story about how one thin-skinned journalist takes a snapshot of a store and and feigns offense. I can only assume she's a staff member's friends niece and you were just trying to get her a little...uh....exposure.

Next thing you'll be telling me there are Mexican gangs in control of small towns in TX. Some fine examples of journalism all around.

When you can buy stripper clothes for pre schoolers at the mall, why would this be offensive?

I am not a shopper at this particular establishment, but how can anyone honestly find that offensive?

Huh? Is this really a story? Man you are reaching. Who CARES what crappy ad is in the Gap. If it's offensive, then you are really easily offended. Let's move on to more important stuff shall we? An article that equals and advertisement is, well, insulting.
