Angle: The Press Should 'Ask The Questions We Want To Answer' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/03/10 10:11 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:15 PM ET

Nevada Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle's understanding of the political press appears to have even conservative outlets scratching their heads.

The Tea Party favorite made another peculiar remark during an interview with Fox News on Monday evening, explaining that she wanted "to have the press be our friend," and "ask the questions we want to answer so that they report the news the way we want it to be reported."

This may seem like a candid admission from a candidate who has experienced a rocky roll-out since winning the Republican nomination. But it has left traditionally sympathetic media figures perplexed if not uncomfortable.

Fox News's Carl Cameron told Angle that she sounded "naïve" before resorting to somewhat nervous laughter. The National Review ran the exchange under the title "Did She Just Say That Out Loud?"

The comments come after a variety of other bizarre statements and actions from Angle with respect to the media. The Nevada Republican abruptly bolted a press conference that she had set up in-state once it came time for the question and answer session, forcing reporters to chase her through a parking lot. Even before that she told the Christian Broadcasting Network's David Brody that she was avoiding mainstream outlets because "there's no earning for me there."

"In that audience, will they let me say I need $25 dollars from a million people go to Sharron Angle.com send money? Will they let me say that?" she said, when explaining how she chooses to grant interviews. "Will I get a bump on my website and you can watch whenever I go onto a show like that we get an immediate bump. You can see the little spinners. People say 'Oh, I heard that. I am going and I'm going to help Sharron out' because they realize this is a national effort and that I need people from all around the nation. They may not be able to vote for me, but they can certainly help."

To be sure, Angle is far from the first candidate to cater her media appearance to audience that she thinks will get her the most political advantage. But being so frank in explaining why she does the interviews she does carries a risk; mainly, it compels reporters like Cameron, and outlets like the National Review to feel defensive about the coverage they're giving her. No reporter wants to have the perception that they are being used by a political candidate. And with Angle essentially admitting that's she's only interested in beneficial coverage, it won't be terribly surprising to see even conservative-leaning reporters start grilling her with tougher questions to prove their bona fides.

"ask the questions we want to answer so that they report the news the way we want it to be reported." Sharon Angle

Does that sound like she is advocating for state controlled media?

If you call Hitlers state controlled media what Sharon Angle is asking? Then the answer in truth IS YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. If Nevada votes for her, we all should leave this country.

Just when you think that her foot is firmly lodged in her mouth, Angle proves that she can take one foot out and replace it with the other one. She is so inept that you have to wonder if she has a brain.

Please, Nevadea, keep her at home in November.

If the conservative media is going to begin asking her 'tough questions' it's because they will also give her the answers.

Now if they can just teach her to wink.

Goodness, Angle really is "Palin Light", isn't she? She has Palin's vast intellect and stunning rhetorical skills ....... reduced by about 95%. You betcha!

I'm still struggling with the concept of "Palin Light." Isn't that redundant? Palin's intellect reduced by 95% is moss or algae or one-cell organisms.

It is amazing that a candidate for public office views the Press as something that is not a free entity, but something to be bought & controlled. But then again, it is FOX news she is doing this on. Rupert Murdock insists that his network is a legitimate news network (the Press as referenced in the US Constitution), yet he allows those being interviewed to dictate what questions can be asked and openly allows them to beg for money. This is not what the Press does, it is turning FOX news into an infomercial for Sharron Angle. Ms. Angle is destroying any resemblance of being a newsman from each of FOX's talking heads. Any real news person would challenge her by asking simple and tough questions not on her list & of which she is not prepared ahead of the interview. I used to enjoy watching FOX, but with each passing year they are becoming more of a bad comedy & infomercial network and my watching has drastically diminished. But then again, R. Murdock has openly stated that he is soley in it for the money and would instantly change the networks format to Liberal if that meant he would be making more money.

Adolph Hitler made lots of money. R Murdock is following in his footsteps.

The neocon movement has been replaced by a even fringier movement. If these teapeople actually get elected in numbers, it will be a sad day.

I find it odd how far right our country is moving for no apparent logical reason. Obama is about as liberal as Reagan was yet people call him socialist? Where do all the lies come from? Who has the power and does power = money? So... who has the money.

The country is moving "far right" and "far down". Ironically Angle, who was a teacher, represents the dumbing-down of America. If I was a parent in her school district, I'd sue the School Board for its failure to get her OUT of the classroom.

Here is what is so bizarre. People that support her won't find anything wrong with her perspective. Basically she is saying I will only answer questions that cast positive light on me. So guess that means she will only appear on Faux News.

Yes, because honest and accurate information straight from the candidate is bad. D@mn media bias asking questions and stuff.

Yeah America’s press. Where do they get off asking repugnant trick questions like "What magazines and newspapers do you read?" When they really should be asking, "Is the President really the President if he was born in Kenya?" You know, good questions like that. OMG. Some one throw this woman a pitch she can hit. Poor darling.

What this actually unmasks is the nakedness of the king that has been all apparent. The king being the self proclaimed king of cable network- FAUX News! How can they now deny that accusations and observations of rational people that they are not a news organization but a shill, a propaganda house of the conservative party?

Should she win, she's a prime candidate to move into the guys' house on C Street in D.C., where the "Christian Controllers" live, like Tom Coburn. She believes that her beliefs should be everyone elses, and that she has some type of divine calling. W thought God spoke to him, too. Relgious tyranny is not that far away, folks.
