The Most GAY-FRIENDLY Colleges (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 08/03/10 09:43 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:15 PM ET

Campus Pride, a non-profit devoted to creating safer communities for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender college students, recently released its 2010 Climate Index of gay-friendly colleges. The group collects its data through the careful analysis of campus LGBT policies across America; schools that are seen as most accepting are given five stars -- an honor bestowed on just 19 out of 230 universities. See below a selection, in no particular order, of five-star schools -- and visit Campus Pride for the full list.

What do you think? Are you surprised by the index's results? Is your college LGBT-friendly? Join the discussion below.

Is San Francisco State gay friendly? I assume it is, though I could be wrong. I really want to go there.

There is one point not made in the article: If a university wishes to properly claim the name university, then it has no business accepting as students those who would bash others on the basis of gender orientation. And if a few get in anyway, they need to be educated or transferred. Why? Because implicit in the word university is acceptance of all, as it is derived from universus, meaning the entirety.

But I suspect that the same so-called universities that are LGBT-hostile would also be those that circle up the preconceptions about everything, from arts to science. I suspect they highly censor art works studied or displayed. I suspect they are among those teaching creationism. I suspect intellectual curiosity is a concept that escapes them.

My undergraduate alma mater should probably be in the gay-friendly column; it was when I was there eons ago. The graduate school I attended worshipped bulldogs...so I suspect they would be quite high on the gay-bashing list, and I would certainly never send any child of mine to that one.

UCR; First school in the NATION to have gender neutral housing. Considered one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the nation as well. It has been considered one of the most LGBT friendly schools by other news sources. Yet not ranked up here with UCLA and Berkeley? These Huffington post articles are very biased towards the "good schools" and it's B.S. people need to do their research instead of just putting schools that are well known across the nation. I'm very upset with these college rankings, and not just this article. All of these "college ranking" articles are biased towards the prestigious schools and it's unfair not only to the schools that deserve these rankings, but the students who make their decisions based off these articles.

Reviews probably are limited to real schools.

Like most others who have commented, I'm wondering why Marymount Manhattan College wasn't on the list. It's my alma mater and it really is one of the most gay-friendly campuses in New York City. The top three majors are Theatre, Dance and Communications so make your own opinions about what that means. There are only 2,500 students and 20 percent of the pop. is women. It's a very inviting school and completely accepting. The gay students often lovingly refer to it as, "Fairymount."

I'm a gay student at WashU, and I have to say it really is rather gay-friendly. All of the fraternities have gay people, and one is even actively involved in LGBT activism. The conservative group actually staged a coming out as a conservative day, since they're apparently the minority on campus. Even the more conservative people I know are surprisingly accepting- a very conservative girl on my floor who always goes to church actually surprised me because she ended up making friends with a lot of the gay guys. A lot of the events put on by Pride also have pretty good attendance by heterosexual students.

My school, the University of Pittsburgh, is not on the list. I remember I had to brow beat them about refusing to offer domestic partner benefits a while back. I reminded them that their endless pleas for money were merely annoying while they kept this obstacle in place.

Wow. Can't believe that University of Vermont isn't on here. EXTREMELY LGBTQ friendly. Just this past year, they established something online that allows students to change their pronouns (he, she, ze) if their gender identity doesn't match.

Surprisingly none of the colleges on here are women's colleges, etc. Is it implied that liberal arts colleges are already gay friendly? Because this list should be called the most gay friendly Universities.
