Michelle Obama Hates Beets First Lady Cleanse

WASHINGTON -- Michelle Obama dishes on the first family's health and eating habits in a new magazine interview, admitting she can't stand beets and that she does an occasional dietary "cleanse" to clear her palate and change her mindset.

In an interview for the September issue of Ladies' Home Journal, Mrs. Obama says she recently was "on a sort of cleanse" in which she was just eating vegetables. The first lady, who's on a campaign against childhood obesity, also says she never talks about weight with her daughters because the topic's too sensitive, and that she made the girls take up tennis under protest.

"I have them do a sport that they like and sport that I like," the first lady said. "I want them to understand what it feels like to do something you don't like and to improve. Because in life you don't always get to do the things you want."

Daughters Sasha and Malia resisted tennis at first, she says, "but now they're starting to get better and they actually like it. And I'm like, 'Mom was right!'"

The first lady also made a point to show she's human when it comes to diet and exercise: She said there are days when she skips her typical 4:30 a.m. workout and that on a recent weekend in Chicago she "ate everything that was available. In fact, we had a take-out food-fest."

And, she can't stand beets.

"Neither the president nor I have the beet gene," she says.

Mrs. Obama doesn't give a lot of detail about her cleanses, saying that she might do one for two days but that "it isn't a way of life because I like food too much."

The cleanses, she said, "help me clean out my palate. Because when you start adding things like sugars into your diet, you start craving them. And the more you eat, the more you crave."

A cleanse can involve a temporary change in diet promoted to rid the body of toxins and improve well-being.

The first lady's cleanse involves eating as many fruits and vegetables as possible and cutting out fats, oil, dairy, meat, caffeine, sugar and starch for a short period of time, according to the White House.

Heather Mangieri, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, said of a cleanse such as the one described by the first lady: "I definitely wouldn't recommend it because you're missing food groups." While missing food groups for a couple of days may not result in deficiencies, she said, "it's really not necessary. You can still feel good by having a balanced diet," eating whole foods and removing processed foods and saturated fats.

Some more radical cleanse regimens in which people give up solid foods for days and eat only liquid solutions can be dangerous, Mangieri said.

The first lady has the cover photo in the September issue of Ladies' Home Journal. The Meredith National Media Group, which publishes the magazine, also is pushing the first lady's anti-obesity initiative with articles or recipes in the September issues of Family Circle and Parents and in the October issues of Ser Padres and Siempre Mujer.

We love you Michelle, but that's just wrong: A life without beets is not worth living.

Beets are a lot like asparagus and cranberries: they're foods that were never meant to be canned.

Agree with the first lady about beets. It's the only veggie I can't stand.

Apparently you have never tried hominy: It's like eating paraffin wax, only not as good.

In shock after trying it, I asked what is this stuff and was told hominy is "corn cured in lye."

I can only imagine what it must have had before they cured it.

Hope you are well my friend.

She the *only* person in the whole government who talks about food, gardening, health and obesity. She's not perfect, but she is on the right path. The real issue is that most every other message out there is skewed toward the perversely unhealthy, so there is added pressure on her to "get it right". Whatever!

She didn't say she stopped eating; only that she switches to vegetables for a few days every once in a while. It's called going vegan, and as long as you still get enough calories your system can adapt fine until you go back to meat, etc.

As a parent of a child who is recovering from anorexia, I am very concerned about Michelle Obama's "Fight Against Childhood Obesity" & the effects her comments re: what is "healthy" or "good" (i.e. "cleansing" by only eating fruits or vegetables for a day or two) are having on our nation's children.

You should be just as concerned about the high rate of obesity. Michelle Obama isn't saying don't eat. She's saying eat right.
07:05 PM on 08/08/2010
Eating right does not = a day or two of restricting yourself to fruits & vegetables. Eating right = daily healthy well balanced meals.

This is a dumb article, who cares what the first lady eats-- the larger issue is that she is pushing through school lunch reform! Such an urgent issue for our children: 1/3 of whom are obese. If we can't agree on the importance of keeping American children healthy: what can we agree on?

Can you think of a 1st lady in our history that ever dressed like she has? In such casual, tacky attire, shorts, etc? She is supposed to tout "good nutrition" and be a role model, claiming to have reformed the white house diet, etc., etc. Yet in a recent interview, quote, etc. she said she likes to "cleanse"!! For those of you unfamiliar that means "fast", aka go without food for a day or two...OR drink a nasty drink containing various weird ingredients and then fast...goiing without food for a day or two....until you supposedly "poop-out" (eliminate for a more Obama-esqe PC word) your toxins....
By the way, "cleanses" have been denounced by medical doctors as unnecessary and there is no such thing as a toxin elimination by either a cleanse, fast or by "colon irrigation".
That is what your kidneys and liver are for and if you are healthy and they are working correctly they take care of that function.
The only reason our wonderful, proper, ELEGANT 1st lady might do a "cleanse" would be to speed up her metabolism and aid her weight loss diet!
Do you think she is skinny enough???
Or should our 1st lady perpetuate that model thin magazine cover stereotype that is hare to attain for young girls and "real women" in the real world????

What a hater you are! Not to mention the oh, so, obvious of NOT reading the article and commenting ad nauseum about what you didn't read. More negative points for not using spell check and reading your answer prior to submission.

I don't blame her. I can't stand them. In fact, I'd rather stand on them than eat them.

Although I'm not a huge fan of beets, after reading all of these recipe ideas I'm REALLY tempted to try them roasted.

Thanks! Do you grow beets? They are best prepared and eaten the first day you pick them. :-)

I love beets, especially roasted. Cube them and dress with balsamic vingegar, olive oil, a little salt and freshly ground blackpepper. Put that on your salad and it's heaven. For the beet haters just give it a try.

Beets fresh from the garden, cooked, peeled and made into a Mustardy Beet Salad - the BEST!! Come on, Michelle - what were you saying about the girls doing something they didn't like?
