Target Apologizes For Political Donation To Group Supporting Anti-Gay Candidate

Target Apologizes
Target Corp. is apologizing for a political donation to a conservative group that angered some employees and sparked talk of a customer boycott.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The head of Target Corp. apologized Thursday over a political donation to a business group backing a conservative Republican for Minnesota governor, which angered some employees and sparked talk of a customer boycott.

Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel wrote employees to say the discount retailer was "genuinely sorry" over the way a $150,000 contribution to MN Forward donation played out. Steinhafel said Target would set up a review process for future political donations.

MN Forward is running TV ads supporting Republican Tom Emmer, an outspoken conservative opposed to same-sex marriage and other gay-rights initiatives that have come before Minnesota's Legislature.

Steinhafel said the contribution from the corporate treasury to a political effort, which until this year wasn't allowed, was designed to support Emmer's stance on economic issues. Ads run by the group were focused on budget policy, not social issues.

"While I firmly believe that a business climate conducive to growth is critical to our future, I realize our decision affected many of you in a way I did not anticipate, and for that I am genuinely sorry," Steinhafel wrote.

He added, "The diversity of our team is an important aspect of our unique culture and our success as a company, and we did not mean to disappoint you, our team or our valued guests."

A phone message left with a Target spokeswoman for more details on the company's new policy was not immediately returned.

OutFront Minnesota, a gay-rights advocacy group, posted an open letter urging Target to take back its money from MN Forward. And "Boycott Target" Facebook groups began to appear.

"We appreciate they are taking this really seriously," said Monica Meyer, OutFront's executive director. "People will feel good about being heard. Some still will probably be holding back to wait and see what the next statement and the next move is."

Target is known in Minnesota for helping sponsor the annual Twin Cities Gay Pride Festival.

The reaction to Target's donation highlights the potential risks for businesses that seek to take advantage of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that threw out parts of a 63-year-old law that prohibited campaign donations from company funds. The ruling changed regulations in about half the states, but the Target donation in Minnesota was among the first major new corporate moves to come to light.

Howard Davidowitz, chairman of New York-based Davidowitz & Associates Inc., a retail consulting and investment banking firm, said he thought any consumer backlash against Target would have been small and only a small group of customers would have been angry enough to stop shopping there.

"They don't want this to go further," Davidowitz said. "What Target did today is called damage control. And I think damage control is perfectly appropriate."

The liberal group MoveOn.org said it has gathered thousands of signatures on a petition by people pledging to avoid shopping at Target over the donation. MoveOn said it would hold a nationwide protest at Target stores Friday.

MN Forward has attracted at least $60,000 in donations since the Target backlash erupted and more than $1 million in total since it was formed. The group has also broadened its political profile. On Thursday, it sent out mail pieces on behalf of six legislative candidates – three Democrats, three Republicans.

Brian McClung, the group's director, said MN Forward planned to push a bipartisan slate of candidates "from day one."

"This group of candidates has varied backgrounds and positions on many issues, but they all have been focused on making Minnesota a better place to grow jobs," he said.

According to public campaign reports, other contributors to MN Forward include Red Wing Shoe Company Inc., Best Buy Co., Pentair Inc., Hubbard Broadcasting Inc., Davisco Foods International Inc. and Polaris Industries Inc.

Tom Emmer's neanderthal "stand on economic issues" is to basically gut the middle class, which is a large part of Target's shopping base. So I'm not buying that part of Steinhafel's "logic" either. It's time to shop even more locally. Forget Best Buy and Holiday as well. They can "say" and contribute how they wish; I'll spend my money how I wish.

My$ -> Target$ -> Emmer$ -> "You Can Run"$ (organization that advocates the execution of homosexuals) Which means when I spent money at Target, they gave it to a guy who donates to a murderous/fascist homegrown American taliban. Take out the middle man and I am funding hate every time I shop at Target (or BestBuy and others). Emmer says that "it was just a dinner table..." Would any sane person buy a dinner table for a terrorist organization so that they can have a nice meal before they murder American citizens? It's just that simple. Don't fund hate. I had no idea but now I know never to buy at Target again.

Personally I think this just illustrates the pandora box that the Supreme Court unleashed with its Citizens United decision. It is ever clear that legislation such as the DISCLOSE act need to be passed as soon as possible. Its contributions like this that should be not only transparent in Minnesota, but all across the United States.

Target/Best Buy announce ant-gay product lines

Major retailers Target and Best Buy announced Monday they’re introducing anti-gay product lines which they claim will reduce or eliminate any chance of their customers being gay. The efforts are a continuation of each company’s support for anti-gay politicians.

Each company donated corporate funds to support Minnesota’s Republican gubernatorial candidate state Rep. Tom Emmer, who opposes gay rights, gay marriage and opposes funding for AIDS prevention programs. Target gave $150,000 to the political action committee MN Forward, which is using the money to support Emmer, while Best Buy gave the group $100,000.

Target’s entry into the anti-gay marketplace is its new clothing lines called “Strait Boyz” and “Girly Girlz.” Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel said the clothes were designed without any input from gay staffers and were created with each gender specifically in mind. The girls’ line focuses on pink colors, skirts and unicorns, while the boys’ line uses darker colors and has pictures of tools, trucks and unfiltered cigarettes.

Update: Target stock just took a $1.3 Billion dollar hit in one day. Gee, isn't that just to bad? The CEO is stonewalling now. Hopefully his board will realize he's a drag on their company and stonewall him. Keep up the boycott. It sends a message to every corporation tempted to intefere in our lives in harmfull ways.

Target can apologize until they turn blue. My gay dollars will not be spent there....EVER!!!

What about a response to their $3,000+ donation to the Yes on 8 campaign in CA? Their reasoning of try to expand their business doesn't exactly make sense there. I'd like a response to that. As for the boycott. I am boycotting them, since I feel no part of my money should go to a company that is spending money to limit my rights. However, it's my decision to do so, and those that choose to continue to want to shop there are free to do so.

then let them go the Political Action Committee route that has worked quite well for so many years. That way, the money is given to groups like the a National or State Republican or Democratic congressional committee or the RNC, instead of a particular candidate, or to a lobbying firm. They then vet the candidates, do background checks,& opposition research to avoid embarassment like this. The company can then concentrate on their core business which is operating retail stores. They are amatuers at politics & it shows, big time.

meanwhile back at the ranch:
GM (Govt Motors) is contributing $36,000 of its fungible cash received from the taxpayers to various members of the Black Congressional Caucus for their re-election campaign coffers. This is far more disturbing than a contribution to Prop 8.

Essentially the taxpayer money is being laundered and redirected as political contributions. It would be interesting to see how the decision was made to contribute and if there was any pressure applied to GM. I smell something and it isn't roses.

I went to Target today, and will be going tomorrow, if need be.

I will not boycott a store just because some people don't like who they give money too.
This is a free country. Just like people have the free will to give to whom ever they want to, so does stores. All stores give money to people some group will not like.

I love Target and, and I love WalMart, and shop at both stores many times each week. And will continue to shop at both stores.

The one good thing about that horrible supreme court decision: social media makes it almost impossible for corporations to escape scrutiny over their political donation choices. Take heart, folks, just will out.
