Trapped By Deadly Train Wreck, Woman Delivers Baby In Her Car

David Lima couldn't catch a break. It seemed like every light was red as he frantically drove his pregnant girlfriend, Alondra Garcia, to the hospital to give birth.

Then, matters got worse: they found themselves stopped in standstill traffic jam.

Little did they know that a half-mile ahead, a 51-year-old man had been killed by a Metra train, trying to drive his car around the crossing gates.

All David Lima knew was that Alondra was about to have a baby, and he was stuck in traffic.

The Chicago Sun-Times describes the panicked father's reaction:

"I was telling her, 'Please, please, hold it in!' " said Lima...

With no chance of making it in time, Lima pulled into a parking lot and dialed 911 at 8:45 a.m. as Garcia began to give birth.

"I just felt the urge to push," she said. "The first time I pushed, her head came out."

The 911 call was fielded by Nick Mardirosian and Eric Zack, two paramedics with the Des Plaines Fire Department who were working the scene of the train crash just down the road. The two raced from the fatal accident to the site of a new life coming into the world.

When they arrived, baby Gabriella was well on her way. They helped complete the birth, cut the umbilical cord, and drove the couple to Lutheran General, according to the Sun-Times.

On the way, Lima, 26, updated his Facebook page. His new status: "My daughter was born in the road!"
