Valley Meat Beef Recall Prompted By E. Coli Outbreak, 1 Million Pounds May Be Affected

Valley Meat Beef Recall

SAN FRANCISCO — A meat processor recalled about 1 million pounds of ground beef products Friday after seven people were sickened by E. coli contamination.

Valley Meat Co., of Modesto, sold the potentially contaminated beef patties and ground beef in California, Texas, Oregon, Arizona and internationally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.

The beef was processed from Oct. 2, 2009, to Jan. 12, 2010. Most of the products were sold frozen. The company was working with the USDA to identify stores where the products were sold and remove the items from shelves.

The USDA would likely have a list of retailers available in three to 10 working days, department spokesman Neil Gaffney said.

"This is the first recall in our history and we will investigate the matter thoroughly and take any measures deemed necessary to further elevate our safety standards, protect consumers, and ensure confidence in our products," Valley Meat said in a statement.

All of the recalled products have the establishment number "EST. 8268" inside the label's USDA mark of inspection. Valley Meat said consumers should discard possibly affected meat or return it to stores for a refund.

The California Department of Health notified the USDA in mid-July of a cluster of E. coli-related illnesses, leading to the recall. The department said at least seven California residents were sickened between February and June. A meat sample collected from a patient's freezer confirmed the source of the outbreak.

Most of the infected patients were in Northern California, with exposures in Marin, Mendocino, Placer, Santa Cruz, Shasta, Siskiyou and Kern counties. None of the patients required hospitalization, and all have recovered, Health Department spokesman Ralph Montano said.

Tests identified the bacteria as E. coli O157:H7, the strain most commonly responsible for food poisoning.

Symptoms of infection often include often include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting and a low fever. More serious infections can lead to kidney failure, brain damage and sometimes death.

It takes 3 to 10 DAYS to get a list of the retailers where they sent this beef? Please! This company isn't keeping records by hand! They have computers that can spit this info out in a matter of minutes. This is just a total disregard for the health of our citizens and it's a disgrace!

Stop eating beef. It's tainted by diseased cows, processed in massively unregulated facilities, is full of hormones, pesticides and insecticides, and is handled by underpaid, sometimes illegal workers. Watch Food, Inc, read the Omnivore's Dilemma, get educated and stop eating this pathetically sorry excuse of a food.

wait... am so confused.....corn is a grass......but grass fed is not corn fed.... but hay fed is not grass fed if alflafa....alfalfa is a legume not a grass...so hay fed is not grass fed?.......but hay fed is grass fed if the hay is grass.......corn is a grass...but corn fed is not grass fed........I hope no one brings up sorghum....

OK anti corn folks, you're screaming a lot about feed lot vs grass with no facts. (as is usual on HP when discussing ag)

Explain this study (among many) that show no significant difference in E Coli bewteen feed lot style vs grass:

E Coli is what happens when you feed cows CORN. Large meat-packing companies do this to fatten up the cows faster. To reduce E coli, they package ammonia in with the meat. Like I said, if you eat beef, by locally and make sure it's grass fed. Also, antiobiotic-free -- antibiotics in meat is part of the reason why many people are becoming more and more immune to them.

absolutely! And preferably you know where the cows came from. I buy mine from a co-op in Humboldt county, only grass fed, and for the poster Hazelpethigfan, if you can't tell the difference you haven't been eating good meat.

There is so much product to push and not enough time to properly filter it. These companies “skip” quantities and hope that no problems arise. By putting a proper system in place they will promise more jobs and release a healthy product each time. The checking and filtering of the beef needs to start at step 1 not at step 3. Check the cow first then check the beef it produces again, than check it again before it is released. Somebody didn’t take the time to “check.” Stiffer penalties for disease freed food would straighten this lack of effort out.

E-Coli outbreaks are yet another reason cows should not be eating corn. They are grass feeding animals! When you mess with nature, this is what happens.

A fun fact: The carbohydrates of hay are not so easily fermented, and hay does not promote either the growth or acid resistance of E. coli. When we (Cornell University researchers) switched cattle from grain-based diets to hay for only five days, acid-resistant E. coli could no longer be detected.

Factory farming of animals is an abhorent practice. Buy your beef from a local farmer who feeds his animals grass and does not finish them on grain. You'll never worry about ecoli.

Thanks for the article, at least you are using science and fact based arguments. But here is statement fro the article: "A brief period of hay-feeding immediately before slaughter "should not affect either carcass size or meat quality," and the diet change could be implemented with minimal expense and inconvenience to feedlot operators, according to Donald H. Beermann, Cornell professor of animal science."

So they are not recomending a complete changeover to hay. Only right before slaughter. Alfalfa, if that's what they used as hay, is not a grass. Strangely enough, corn is technically a grass.

We haven't purchased ground beef in 25 years and we've never been sick from grinding our own! I wholeheartedly endorse your solution, as we can trim it, grind it and weigh it to our liking and it only takes a few minutes.

How many health inspectors does the FDA and the USDA actually have. Very few is the answer. It's all based on the "honor system"...We need more...a lot more.

Also, this country does not product antibiotics anymore. 99% of all the antibiotics that we in the US use is produced in China to make more money due to the low cost of labor. Is that NOT a National Security issue? Seriously, if we went to war, or a trade war(more likely) with China, what do we do? All of Big Pharma and the corp[orate elite make money from us while shipping our jobs overseas just to make the extra bucks.

1 million pounds of meat beef!!! that's a big among of poison beef, it must be a bit difficult to recall them back. If possible shouldn't eat meat beef for a while to prevent yourself.
