When Google Wave launched, there was talk that Google's real-time collaboration and communication tool could be an "email killer," "Twitter killer," or "Facebook killer." Invitations to Google Wave were a coveted hot commodity that fetched bids of up to $5,000 on eBay.

Despite the hype, Wave crashed. Just last week, less than a year after a preview of the "revolutionary" tool was released to 100,000 users for wider testing, Google announced that it was pulling the plug on Wave.
