Kmart Tries To Join Fashion Game (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 08/10/2010 11:02 am   Updated: 05/25/2011 5:20 pm

"Jeggings," "Balmain" and "Distressed Slouchy Skinny Jeans" aren't words you would associate with Kmart...until now. The big box store is upping its fashion ante, taking a cue from Target, and offering trendy duds for fall.

Its website is already pushing key themes for next season's dressing, from military to rocker to embellishments and the brand ran four pages of print ads in September's Vogue. And according to WWD, Kmart has even staged runway shows in Chicago and Los Angeles to promote its three new juniors lines: Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez, Bongo and Rebecca Bonbon. Chief marketing officer Mark Snyder explained to WWD, "The runway shows are designed to show our capabilities and the type of fashions we have. Customers believed we didn't have enough brands or the right brands. We always had a great selection of private labels."

None of the new Balmain-esque pieces are online yet, but take a look at some screen grabs we pulled from Kmart's website below. What do you think?

Quick Poll

I think it's great that department stores are becoming more chic and trendy because it means that fashionistas who can't afford Marshall's and Dillard's prices can still look just as stylish. I was also excited when JC Penney did a similar fashion upheaval because this shows that the big designers see that it's important to make their designs available for everyone who's interested, not just wealthy people.

Good for them, everyone should have access to trendy fashion no matter what their income status.

these are cute. but I'm worried about the quality. sometimes it looks good on the ad, but when you see it in real life - not so much.

I have two daughters and these styles are really cute. But, I would make two suggestions to kmart if they really wasn't to "break through."
1. Open some mall shops just for teen clothes.
2. Come up with a cute name and rebrand yourself.

The clothes are just part of the total picture.

I started shopping there again since I do not and will not shop at ChinaMart (WalMart) and now I am boycotting Tarjay (Target) so I will go back to KMart more often. I like Sears too.

Gotta be careful with "faux" fur, especially fur lapels and trim. Much of it comes from China and does not have to be labeled as real if it is below a certain percentage of the material used in the product.
Otherwise, it's pretty cute.

I love the military jacket and the skinny cargo pants. Too bad we don't have a Kmart anymore.

The pictures are adorable but does the real product look good? I have made a couple of purchases in clothing from K...and they looked like LL Bean knock offs. It depends on how well they are made. But one thing for sure, if it comes from K-Mart you are not going to have a Cow if something gets spilled on it or it gets ruined. I feel so much tension wearing clothing I have paid $100's of dollars for and I am more worried about the clothing than having a good time. If K-mart could copy the Gap...or Banana Rep for a cheap price, they would rule the world.

Sometimes with lower end stores the styles are cute, but the fit is off and not comfy....o avoid K-mart. Not to mention,it has been my experienc that the big K is not a good place to shop..the dressing rooms suck and sometimes dust is non the product ont eh shelf...so this is a n absolute no for me.
