'Cathy' Comic Strip ENDING

Cathy Comic Strip

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The comic strip "Cathy," which has chronicled the life, frustrations and swimsuit season meltdowns of its namesake for more than 30 years, is coming to an end.

Cathy Guisewite, the strip's creator, said Wednesday that deciding to end the comic strip was "excruciating." The comic has won several awards, including a 1992 National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award and an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program in 1987, and at its height appeared in 1,400 papers.

"It's just been really unbelievably agonizing to make the decision," Guisewite said in a telephone interview from her home in the Los Angeles area. "The strip has not only been the most astonishing form of therapy for 34 years, but doing a daily comic strip for the newspaper set a certain rhythm for my life."

The final "Cathy" strip, will run in newspapers on Sunday, Oct. 3.

Guisewite, 59, said she chose to end the largely autobiographical comic strip because she wanted more time with her 18-year-old daughter and her parents and because "other personal deadlines started becoming more pressing for me than the newspaper ones."

She said her "creative biological clock" was also urging her to try something else, although she isn't sure what that will be.

The best part about writing the comic, "besides the personal therapy," she said, was how she was able to connect with women.

"It was just such a privilege to be able to be that voice for women," she said.

The comic strip also provided her with a great vehicle to vent, she said.

"You can go bathing suit shopping and come home and ... get back at the swimwear industry," Guisewite said.

Guisewite, who started writing comic strips at the urging of her mother, was first published in 1976 by Kansas City-based Universal Press Syndicate, now Universal Uclick.

Lee Salem, president and editor of Universal Uclick, said in a news release that the same day Universal received its first "Cathy" submission, the company sent a contract back to Guisewite.

"Seven months later, the strip began in newspapers," Salem said. While "Cathy" wasn't an immediate hit, it gained popularity. It's currently carried in about 700 newspapers, according to Universal Uclick.

But Guisewite said it did hurt each time a newspaper dropped "Cathy."

"But I know that my strip has had just an astonishing run," she said. "I have worked really hard to try to earn my space because I know that it's extremely special to be able to own that little chunk of the newspaper."

I think the thing that used to appeal to me about "Cathy" is that she/it kinda reminded me of "Rhoda." That nostalgic feel, plus the soap opera quality of her relationship with Irving, kept me reading. But unfortunately as I matured, she did not.

And for pete's sake, will somebody PLEASE start a Facebook campaign to get rid of the following strips:

Beetle Bailey - this comic started in 1950 and the "humor" has not changed one wit since day one.
Family Circus - does ANYONE want this strip to continue?? "Not Me!"
Curtis - how many years can a student have the same teacher in a PUBLIC SCHOOL? Is she a glutton for punishment? And those "African fables" they do every Thanksgiving (with Kente cloth borders) are torture!
Marmaduke - He's a big dog that acts human. We GET it! Still not funny!
Jump Start - Can the adults understand the babies' thought bubbles or not?!
Girls & Sports - I'd rather read Family Circus. Nuff Said.

In conclusion, bring back Agnes and Calvin & Hobbes reruns!

This comic is not funny. I used to like it when I was a kid, for whatever reason, but reading it in the paper, it's just not funny. I'm a sucker for nostalgia, though.

As much as I am sad to see Cathy go, she needs to let her writer get her deserved rest, for a while anyway. I think I would like to see Pickles or Luann take her place, if that can be done, in our paper, at least. I think my first choice would be Luann.

She had a few wonderful anti-fur and pro-animal strips that were done in an amusing, non-preachy way. Thirty-four years is a great run, and I wish her all the best. She seems like a lovely person.

My favorite was "Sylvia." Haven't seen it in ages, but I found it a delight.

I read Cathy for years, and it was very hit or miss to me. Nowhere near as bad as Family Circus, Beetle Bailey and a few others still being syndicated. It did often cast her/women in a bad light of being unable to get over image issues.

While there are undoubtedly hundreds of strips I've never seen, there were a few that, unlike Cathy, I was very sad to see them go. Calvin and Hobbes was probably the best, and certainly my all-time favorite (genius insight and drawing), then Pogo, the Far Side and Bloom County.

The only current strips I've read that seem to even approach the depth and wonder of those deceased strips are This Modern World, Pearls before Swine and occasionally Dilbert. I never had a soft spot for Peanuts (Except the Christmas and Halloween TV shows). Way too many bad Peanuts strips outweighed the rare great ones.

If only my local paper would retire Beetle Bailey, nonSequitor and Prince Valiant.

Oh yeah, those are sad.

I truly thought this strip had ceased production years ago. I had no idea it was still going. Good for her with the long run she enjoyed. I didn't particularly like it, but I can certainly respect her longevity!

I can't say I'm sad to see it go, though. It wasn't nearly as funny as Calvin & Hobbes, or my personal favorite, Bloom County. Really hated seeing them go. But the one that really made me almost mourn it's passing was Peanuts. I'll always have a little corner of my heart reserved Charlie Brown, Linus, Snoopy and all the rest of the Peanuts gang. I've still got my fingers crossed that Charlie Brown will wind up with the little red-haired girl.

My favorite is still Dilbert. He hits the nail on the head frequently! Cathy had its time, but its time to move on now. Thanks Cathy. Thanks for the humor and best of luck to you in all future endeavors!

Maybe Cathy & Dilbert should get together.

I suspect many of the posters bashing Cathy are insecure fattys.

I'll always have a soft spot for the Cathy comics because it was the one my mom and I shared when she was alive. But I can totally understand how Guisewite would be burned out after all thee years.

Nooooooo. Dang it, I remember reading it in the paper a lot.

You mean I won't get to see the same trenchant and humorous insights about insensitive men and stubborn love handles that every female comedian since Elaine Boosler has tossed out for the past two and a half decades? Darn. Now where will I get my daily dose of "Chocolate is better than men" jokes?
