5-Day Emergency Contraceptive 'Ella' Approved By FDA

MATTHEW PERRONE   08/13/10 06:21 PM ET   AP

Ella Approved

WASHINGTON — Federal health officials on Friday approved a new type of morning-after contraceptive that works longer than the current leading drug on the market.

The pill ella from HRA Pharma reduces the chance of pregnancy up to five days after sex. Plan B, the most widely used emergency contraceptive pill, begins losing its ability to prevent pregnancy within three days of sex.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug Friday as a prescription-only birth control option. The ruling clears the way for U.S. sales of the drug, which is already approved in Europe.

Morristown, N.J.-based Watson Pharmaceuticals will market the drug in the U.S. under an agreement with HRA. Watson said it will launch the pill in the fourth quarter.

Studies of ella by its manufacturer showed the drug prevented pregnancies longer and more consistently than Plan B.

In a head-to-head trial between the two drugs, women who took ella had a 1.8 percent chance of becoming pregnant, while women who took Plan B had a 2.6 percent chance. Experts tracked nearly 1,700 women who randomly received one of the two pills within three to five days of having unprotected sex.

Plan B is made by Teva Pharmaceuticals and is also marketed in several generic versions. Unlike ella, Plan B and other generic versions are available without a prescription for women 17 years and older.

HRA Pharma did not request over-the-counter status for its drug.

Ella uses the hormone progesterone to delay ovulation, a key step in the fertilization process.

Despite this, the drug has drawn criticism from anti-abortion groups who say it is closer to an abortion pill than an emergency contraception pill.

Groups including the Family Research Council argue the drug is chemically similar to the abortion drug mifeprestone, which can be taken to end a pregnancy up to 50 days into the gestation period. That drug has been associated with severe infections and bleeding after abortion. However, FDA reviewers reported no life-threatening medical side effects with ella.

The most common side effects with the drug included headache, nausea and abdominal pain, according to an FDA release.

Abortion rights groups hailed the approval as an important step for the FDA, which was criticized in 2006 for its handling of Plan B's approval.

Last year a federal judge ruled that the FDA deliberately delayed making a decision on whether to permit over-the-counter sales of Plan B to teenage girls, at the behest of the Bush administration.

"Approval of ella is another indication that the FDA is committed to restoring scientific integrity in its decisions," said Kirsten Moore, president of the advocacy group Reproductive Health Technologies Project.

Privately held HRA Pharma is based in Paris and specializes in women's health products.

"Approval of ella is another indication that the FDA is committed to restoring scientific integrity in its decisions," said Kirsten Moore, president of the advocacy group Reproductive Health Technologies Project.
The FDA is nothing but a tool for the pharmaceutical companies. Its all about controlling who can be part of their elite club..... only the extremely rich can apply. FDA decision to go after MMS miracle mineral solution. Sodium Chlorite proven to be extremely effective at killing Marlaria and many other bacteria and virus born pathogens flies in face of scientific studies.
There reasons are not based on scientific fact but only to protect there turf.

5 days after the act...that's an abortive pill. i chose Natural Family Planning, if i got pregnant, i'd keep the baby no matter how he/she got conceived. the baby is not responsible for my action or the actions of someone else and shouldn't be the one paying for it.
beside those pills are not without their health risk to the mother either.

Hopefully if you are practicing NFP, you would know that you do not conceive the second you have sex. Ovulation will often be several days away, which means there is time to stop it before a potential conception.

Took a long time and a lot of hard work to get this approved in the US. Well done and thanks.

My USA social security goes to an American bank in Chicago. Every month I pull my SS out at an ATM here in the Netherlands. The ATM makes the exchange rate automatically in realtime according to what the rate is at the moment.

2 years ago I went to the ATM and tried pulling out 20 Euros and it spit it out so I thought the deposit from SS had been made. Then I tried pulling out a 100 and it spit it out.

Found out they were allowing me to go into the red (never happened before) and charging me 35 dollars plus interest.

I called them immediately and the women said ''Sorry, we should have warned you, so we are doing you a ONE time favor by refunding the fees but from now on I should be aware.

Needless to say I don't ever pull it out in one time anymore. always leave about 10 Euros in for exchange rate fluctuation.

This ia really great, people can be taken away by the moment.

Those who are pro-life should try and copulate as much as possible. They shouldn't let all those other unfertilized eggs be denied the chance to live.

"Ella uses the hormone progesterone to delay ovulation, a key step in the fertilization process."

WHAT part of this do people not get, those anti-abortion folks? Actually, I am convinced they are anti-everything that is a civil right.

I should add, I respect your right to your own personal beliefs. However, when I read things about souls and so forth, this particular drug doesn't even allow for a fertilized egg. So unless we are saying eggs are life in and of itself, I don't get the outrage.
07:01 PM on 08/14/2010
I think there's also the correlation that people pro-life are also more likely to be in favor of the death penalty. Hypocrisy at its finest.
10:09 AM on 08/15/2010
lol that's the hilarity of the argument......in saying abortion is wrong because it's killing a life/soul etc. they are by default saying an egg is life, a sperm is life........there is no end.

technically by following their logic, a womans monthly period is an abortion, as well every time a man ejaculates.......how do they measure life now.....by it's potential

the argument in itself makes no sense whatsoever.....but don't try to point this out or risk being labelled an extreme leftist

The 14th amendment bestows United States citizenship on a baby at birth. That would make all fetuses/fertilized eggs/zygotes prior to birth illegal aliens.
09:45 PM on 08/15/2010
More like "pending citizens" - as long as the parents are "subject to the jurisdiction of" the State within which the baby is being born.

It's great we are getting these pills!!

I think teenagers/young adults should be taught to enjoy their sexuality within the limits of responsability, being sensible, respectful and staying healthy. These pills are a good help in case someone commits a mistake because, we are all humans!! And they are way more efffective than abstinence, just take a look at the Palins: abstinence does not work and to suppress a part of us, as important as sexuality, is never good nor convenient.
09:45 PM on 08/15/2010
What do you mean "abstinece does not work?" That's statement is untrue.
06:24 AM on 08/16/2010
Well, as I've said "to supress a part of us" never works. Plus, it is unhealthy and almost impossible to achieve by teenagers driven by their hormones!!
