Eden Abergil Facebook Pictures: Israeli Soldier's Photos Cause Outrage

Eden Abergil Facebook Pictures Photos

JERUSALEM -- A former Israeli soldier posted photos on Facebook of herself in uniform smiling beside bound and blindfolded Palestinian prisoners, drawing sharp criticism Monday from the Israeli military and Palestinian officials.

Israeli news websites and blogs showed two photographs of the woman. In one, she is sitting legs crossed beside a blindfolded Palestinian man who is slumped against a concrete barrier. His face is turned downwards, while she leans toward him with her face upturned. Another shows her smiling at the camera with three Palestinian men with bound hands and blindfolds behind her.

The incident was a reminder of the fraught relations between Israeli soldiers and the West Bank Palestinians under their control.

Israeli soldiers have run into trouble on the social media sites like Facebook and YouTube before. Most recently a group of combat soldiers were reprimanded for breaking into choreographed dance moves while on patrol in the West Bank town of Hebron. The dance featured prominently on YouTube.

Palestinian Authority spokesman Ghassan Khatib condemned the photos and said they pointed to a deeper malaise - how Israel's 43-year-old occupation of Palestinians has affected the Israelis who enforce it.

"This shows the mentality of the occupier," Khatib said, "to be proud of humiliating Palestinians. The occupation is unjust, immoral and, as these pictures show, corrupting."

The Israeli military also criticized the young woman, who Israeli news media and bloggers identified from her Facebook page as Eden Aberjil of the southern Israeli port town of Ashdod. No official confirmed her identity.

"These are disgraceful photos," said Capt. Barak Raz, an Israeli military spokesman. "Aside from matters of information security, we are talking about a serious violation of our morals and our ethical code and should this soldier be serving in active duty today, I would imagine that no doubt she would be court-martialed immediately," he told Associated Press Television News.

It was not clear whether the army could punish the woman, because she has finished her compulsory military service.

The comments by the woman and her friend in an exchange below one photograph suggested how casually the picture was treated, including jokes and sexual innuendoes.

"You're the sexiest like that," her friend wrote.

"I wonder if he's got Facebook!" the woman in the photograph responded. "I have to tag him in the picture!"

Aberjil did not respond to reporters' questions Monday.

The photographs were a reminder of snapshots taken in 2003 by American soldiers at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq that showed Iraqi detainees naked, humiliated and terrified. In that case, some soldiers went to prison after the photos came to light.

The photographs of the Israeli soldier and the Palestinians, by contrast, show no overt physical abuse or coercion of the prisoners, although they are ridiculed in the comments between the soldier and her friends.

Palestinians are routinely handcuffed and blindfolded when they are arrested to stop them from trying to flee.

And btw, The Abu Ghraib prison scandel in Iraq, is business as usual in any Israeli camp for detaining Palestinians. Many Israeli human rights organizations such as Btsalim attest to that!

This is no surprise for the Israeli society. When I was a kid crossing the bridge back and forth on family visits between the west bank and Jordan, we used to be ushered to private rooms where we had to strip down to the underwear and sometimes more. Kids with their moms infront of female soldiers to search them and Men in front of male officers in the most humiliating way looking for "security questionable" items. As an occupied people, we were isolated from the out world an naive when it came to our dignity. I don't know how we accepted such humulation other than to say such acts had sown the seeds for the first intifiada in the late 80s. It's shocking to me what demoralized people can accept when they don't know the norm among civilized nations in the 20th century. The joke was and still is that Israel is labeled the "Oasis of democracy" in the mideast. I remember once bringing stamps from Jordan which I collected and the officer confiscated them cause they're a "symbol of an enemy state" at the time. I am pretty sure he was a collector himself.

Really? I read the original page on FB, before the entire bruhaha, and couldn't find what you're alleging. Do you have a credible link to prove your allegation?

To WigWag:

It’s rare to see so much disinformation so efficiently condensed. The UN did not “designate” a Jewish state. The UNGA recommended this, but the partition plan was rejected by the UNSC in March 1948.

The Arabs did not attempt to “kill all the Jews.” Only after Zionist terrorism had ethnically cleansed 40% of the Arab population by the British exit in May 1948, Arab forces attempted to expel the Jews from the mandate area recommended for Palestinians, not from the area recommended for Jews.

The Palestinians had no military, so didn’t “attack and lose.” They were a helpless people driven by 33 massacres and terrorism into UN refugee camps from 531 villages and 11 cities, to which they have never been permitted to return in violation of international law.

Palestine has been recognized as a distinct region of that name since at least the Roman Empire. It was a province of that name under the Ottomans, the League of Nations mandate and the Zionist movement which coveted a “Jewish homeland” in “Palestine.” So who do you imagine inhabited Palestine, Norwegians or Hottentots?

It is not the responsibility of any other nation, Arab or otherwise, to “cough up” land for the Palestinians. They were robbed of their their homes and communities in Palestine by Israel, and restoration and restitution are Israel’s responsibilities alone, although moral debts are also owed the Palestinians by the UK and US without whose complicity this debacle could have been avoided.

It is clear from your recent posts (see quote below) that you do NOT support the existence of a Jewish homeland under ANY borders. Are you in a middle-eastern timezone Jack?

You seem to employ the the "Chomsky doctrine" of overwhelming the reader with (carefully-selected) facts coupled with reasoning that reaches obvious (predetermined) conclusions. Luckily, his science isn't as tainted by self-righteousness.

“I think we got rid of that system in Mississippi about a half-century ago, and Chaim Crow isn't any better looking than Jim Crow.”

This was your response to:

"would YOU support a Jewish state in the 1967 borders without additional Palestinians being allowed to live in the Jewish part? Simple question. Let me know if you need more definition around it."

Your various other statements about the UNs composition when Israel was voted on miss the fact that the main opposer were the Muslim dictatorships: Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan most of which were created by the same great powers (with sizeable oppressed minorities and most of which have laws on their books that are discriminatory against non-Muslims. These same Muslim countries then denied the Palestinians basic human rights for seventy years in violation of the very treaties you so often like to quote. Do you need references to any of this? I believe you're good at finding this info.

Read the Haaretz article. More soldiers are posting similar pictures showing that this is a pattern. Eden Aberjil has made more remarks exposing her as a violent racist with an irrational hatred of Palestinians. She is a poster child for everything wrong with Israel today.

Violent racist would not be a term I'd use to describe her. A patriot, absolutely, a product of her environment, hell yes, what do you expect after decades and decades of being terrorized? Do you expect Israelis to just forgive and forget?
08:23 PM on 08/21/2010
BcemXAHA ,
Should we expect to see jews killing thousands and thousands of Palestinians forever?
The world is tired of watching it,,,,,,,,,!!!

Just so that Israel stops calling itself "the most moral army in the world".
Another episode reported in Haaretz: IDF soldiers caught selling computers belonging to Gaza Flotilla activists.

I suppose we shouldn't be outraged by this photo since our tax dollars paid for it's contents.

Look on the bright side: now we know where at least 3 prisoners are and that they are at least alive.

Now, if we could have documented evidence that the remaining 7, 380 are also alive, that would be most helpful.

we would like to feel the same about Galid Shalit....except there are no pictures insuring he is still alive...
nor are there any visits allowed by the RedCross or any other humanitarian group....
so at least you have a bright side.....

Shalit is a prisoner of war. I empathize with his suffering, but he was a part of a brutal occupation army that is engaged in ethnic cleansing and enforcing the theft of Palestinian land. The Palestinians have every right to resist the occupation of the West Bank and the blockade of Gaza.

So will Israel get away with it as usual???
Yes.

Isreal? This was one soldier.....not all of Israel...but I guess it is hard for some to tell the distinction between one person and entire state.

Unfortunately, this soldiers action is part of a widespread pattern. By the way, who took the pictures and how many other soldiers were off camera?

They're from the same part of the world. Not surprising.
07:05 AM on 08/18/2010
Contrary to anti-Israel propaganda, MANY Israelis look like our Arab cousins...we're related. Come to Israel, see who we are...you'll find a wide variety of people, Jewish, Arab, Armenian, Circassian, and others.
01:31 PM on 08/17/2010
The pictures should be forwarded to all Christian Fundamentalist Churches who give blind support to Israel no matter what, along with pictures drawn by Palestinian children depicting their daily lives.

Surely Jesus Christ would not condone such actions.

The Christians have been trying to rewrite Christ's message since St. Augustine and St Thomas Aquinas made it his life's mission. You might enjoy this:

I suppose Jesus Christ condones the killing of abortion doctors, the blowing up of federal buildings like in Oklahoma City, and Americans killing their terrorist enemies, which are the same enemies that Israel is dealing with. Blindness comes in many forms and much of it is in people who have no idea of what war is like or having their lives threatened on a daily basis. I don't know what Jesus Christ would condone, and I don't think you do either.
