Lance Stephenson Arrested For Attacking Girlfriend

Lance Stephenson Arrested Domestic Violence

NEW YORK — Indiana Pacers draft pick Lance Stephenson, after pushing his girlfriend down a flight of stairs, grabbed her and hit her head on the bottom step, prosecutors said Monday.

A judge released Stephenson, 19, without bail late Sunday night after his arrest on assault, menacing and harassment charges. Prosecutors had asked for $7,500 bail.

In a lengthy statement issued Monday, Pacers president Larry Bird called Stephenson's arrest "very disappointing to the Pacers franchise and to me personally." A defense attorney said Stephenson didn't harm his girlfriend.

Authorities say the confrontation occurred around 5 a.m. Sunday when the woman, Jasmine Williams, was returning home to her apartment building with two friends. Witnesses said Stephenson was waiting for her and yelled, "Are you kidding me?" before pushing her down the stairs.

A criminal complaint provided Monday by the Brooklyn district attorney's office said that as Williams lay at the bottom of the stairs, Stephenson picked up her head and slammed it on the bottom step.

When police arrived, Stephenson told them the woman had fallen down the stairs, prosecutors said. The complaint said Williams suffered head and back wounds and possible damage to her neck.

Stephenson's New York-based attorney, Alberto Ebanks, said Monday his client "did not maliciously, intentionally or in any other way cause harm to Jasmine Williams."

Ebanks, calling the charges against his client "very serious," added: "Everyone, especially Lance, regrets that this incident occurred. We look forward to addressing these charges in the appropriate venues."

Stephenson was one of the nation's top high school prospects. He played one season at Cincinnati before applying for early entry to the NBA draft.

Bird said the organization was still waiting to hear all the facts.

Still, Stephenson "should not have put himself in the position he was in early Sunday morning," the former Boston Celtics great added. "We have consistently emphasized to our players the importance of not putting themselves in situations where bad things can happen."

Depending on the investigation's outcome, Bird said, "we will deal appropriately with Lance so that he, the team and the entire Pacers community understands that this message cannot be ignored."

too many people who are star athletes as kids and later as adults are always catered to and allowed to get away with all kinds of things. remember how much the teachers bowed over backwards to give ball players extra credit so they'd have good enough grades to be able to play. if they have bad behavior, it is overlooked or laughed about. violence against women is a serious problem. more women are killed by their significant other than by strangers.

He's a highly coveted player. The organization will do everything they can to protect him. That's par for the course for these guys. Once they are identified as a "talent" the rules change and the girls/women around them better watch out.

Too bad the Taliban doesn't have a professional basketball league in Afghanistan. This creep would fit in perfectly.

To many suicide bombers would play the old "switch-a-roo" with the basketball and run into the stands at away games. Life expectancy in the TBA, six games.

I didn't hear them speak of any injuries. If she don't have the injuries consistant with what is described to have happened, shame, shame, shame.

According to the article, he had head and back injuries and possible injuries to her neck. You won't get any information from the hospital because of HIPPA, so any specifics have to come from her side or law enforcement as described in the complaint if Stephenson is charged. You can make no conclusions from what is or is not contained in an article or the bail requested.

What strikes me is no bail request. I would think that if she went down a flight of stairs and had her head slammed/ hit on a step, the state would creamed him on the bail amount. The woman that hit a senator in the face with a pie had a 250 thousand dollar bail set against her.

Heed the warning girlfriend.....boyfriend beaters become wife beaters (and I don't mean the tee shirts)

I guarantee you she will get pregnant, have his baby and go after child support. Most of these girlfriends will not blow the opportunity to get $30,000 a month in income.

Can't get money from him if he never enters the NBA and only enters prison. At his age, someone from the Pacers or his family, should have babysat him for at least the first year.

Oh that's real good! Get drafted to basketball's version of major league then turn around and come close to throwing it all away.

Er, slam dunking her head is not the same as dribbling, but I agree with you on the cage offense.

First of all, we do not know how much truth there is to her version of the story. Don't jump the gun.

I hate to sound insensitive but what did this woman really expect strolling in at 5am. She is involved with a 19 year old millionaire bound dude that i'm sure has an ego to the ceiling.Plus most women know what type of man there dealing with. They know if he is the soft push over type or the crazy snap for any reason type guy.

Not to excuse his behavior but women seem to not understand that they have to play by different rules when involved with celebrities or sports figures. Some of these men will usually tend to react violently after they feel they have been disrepected publicly by there women.

Ego never trumps simple civility and I don't care if a man has zillions of dollars or 2 cents! He is still bound by the laws of the land and cannot act violently toward others, male or female. Every woman has the right to expect from every man (and vice versa!) that she is not bound by his ego in her dealings w/him, nor is she to fear that what she does will induce a violent reaction. No, I will not accept that you "play by different rules" when you date a celebrity or sports figure! These men are no different than Joe Smith back home except that they probably have more money than Joe. Your very argument is insensitive and excuses these overblown egos and their actions!
