Movie Theater Bedbugs: AMC Empire 25 Sprayed After Bedbugs Found In Seats

08/18/10 09:17 PM ET   AP

Amc Empire 25

NEW YORK — Bedbugs have attacked a popular movie theater in Times Square as New York battles the persistent pests. The AMC Empire 25 in Times Square was sprayed overnight and reopened Wednesday. A guest at the AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9 theater also reported a bite in late July.

Spokesman Justin Scott said all AMC theaters in Manhattan were inspected. He said the chain takes every report seriously and acts to ensure the health of guests and employees.

Bedbugs were found in two seats at the Empire 25 during an Aug. 3 inspection, and a guest reported being bitten this past weekend. Pest control experts were called, the seats were removed and new ones were installed.

Bedbugs also have been found in several New York stores. City officials have instituted plans to fight the infestations.

A movie theatre in Times Square? Not surprised. I know its all flashy and glitzy now, but anyone familiar with the movie Taxi Driver knows the real Times Square. Ewww. Glad I watch my movies at home (Bit Torrent folks!)

There is a new technique for getting rid of them. They use propane heaters and get the temp up really high. This gets rid of them for real. Here is a link from the Toronto Star.

"Bedbugs were found in two seats at the Empire 25 during an Aug. 3 inspection"

Oh come on. If you've had them before, you know how ridiculous the idea that they were only in two seats is. The breed very fast, hide in the smallest little area, and are known to hitch a ride on anything and everything. Also, doing one extermination is almost never enough.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking. And the bedbug problem in NYC won't improve if people keep acting like it's a minor issue. We had such a problem with them that we finally left the city altogether.

I found it amusing that Elle Magazine was recently nominated as one of the best places to work in the city. For one it is a vicious place to work unless your are in one of the inside circles. Devil Wears Prada describes the environment at Elle perfectly. Secondly I find it amusing that these people who work at Elle who seem to think they are above us mere humans are now infected with bed bugs. Guess they need start following their own personal hygiene advice or maybe Joe Zee should have deloused his Channel Fur before bringing it back in to office; or maybe he should have deloused himself before wearing the outfit.

OMG that such people would have bedbugs is like some kind of poetic justice. I fanned you.

Bedbugs are almost as disgusting as Sarah Palin.

Its very close, but I think Palin still edges bed bugs out.

Bedbugs are horrifying for more than just fast infestation and horrid blood-sucking bites. If the female doesn't want to breed, the male cracks open her carapace and shoots his goo inside. It eventually reaches her internal egg sack.

LOL, physically they're pretty fragile, but can withstand most chemicals and come back for more.

Movie houses are the #2 place to catch bedbugs, the first being hotels and motels. The bedbugs like the dark and while watching the movie, people are sitting still, making it easy to climb onto.

Rental vehicles are right up near the top too, climbing on the driver and in the luggage during transit. Commuter trains with cloth seats as well. Anyplace where there are captive passengers.
