Obama: 'No Regrets' Over Ground Zero Mosque Comments

Obama

08/18/10 01:11 PM ET   AP

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Despite criticism from Republicans and others, President Barack Obama said Wednesday he has "no regrets" over the comments he made about the right of Muslims to build an Islamic center near the former site of the World Trade Center in New York.

Obama's latest comment was in response to a question shouted by a reporter as he was leaving a townhall-style meeting on the economy in Ohio.

The president inserted himself into the debate over the proposed Islamic center, which includes a mosque, when he said last week Muslims "have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country" and that included building the Islamic center in lower Manhattan. A day later, Obama told reporters that he wasn't endorsing the specifics of the plan.

His position has drawn criticism from those who say that the $100 million Islamic center should not be built two blocks away from the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Republicans have seized on the issue, with many trying to force Democrats to either stand with the president or buck him.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who is locked in a tight midterm election race, was the highest profile Democrat to move away from Obama, saying through a spokesman that he thinks the mosque should be built someplace else.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., hedged on the controversy Wednesday, saying in a statement that while the freedom of religion is a constitutional right, "where a place of worship is located is a local decision."

President Obama is sort of like a grandfather clock with regard to:

The Wall Street Robber Barons
The "war" in in the Middle East
Marriage Equality, ENDA and DADT
The Muslim Community Center
Internet neutrality

flip......flop......flip......flop......

I really had such high hopes. Argh!

Entitlemments are good for a working stiff like me. Why would I go against my best interests. Why would anyone else in similar straights.

alumtrix--

Even Jesus expressed anger in the temple, when he was furious that our Father's dwelling was turned into a market of thieves and liars. Thus, if my Master can do it, so can I.

Why do Republicans hate American freedoms? Because they hate the freedom to disagree with Republicans! They are like toddlers.

Obama just like the rest of the American people have a right to their own opinion. Simple as that.

I'm not saying they can't practice their religion. I am saying please have some common decency and go practice it a bit further away from Ground Zero. The Cordoba folks know exactly what kind of controversy they are starting. Maybe this is what they really want? It could be a sneak attack on our system as a whole. Get us to bend the constitution just a little bit. Get started on that downward slippery slope of censorship and such, then we would be just like them! I don't deny that I don't want it so close to GZ, but I don't want to color all of them as bad people either. But I DO want to use my brain and ask myself, why are they so set on putting it right there? What is their hidden agenda? Everyone has one. If you think they don't have some kind of hidden agenda, then I have a bridge to sell you in the Mojave Desert. It has a great view!

Why should they practice farther from Ground Zero? After all, Muslims were also killed in that attack. It is up to the people of the US to give the jihadists (of all religions) a big raspberry by making that center a center for peace and understanding. I plan to do my part.

I remember JFK going through this nonsense when he was running for President!! A Roman Catholic IRISHMAN in the White House!! It was shocking..but he always said his religion would not effect his decisions while in office.. he stood his ground.. President Obama should stand his ground.. free will is not just an American right..it is a human right.. Religion should never enter the political arena.. NEVER.

Obama took a look over the comments before the speech and said to himself, "Will I regret anything here?" Then he said, "No." Well played Mr. President. Well played.

Have you noticed that whenever you hear Obama's Saturday statement, which mentions No Opinion on the Wisdom of the Mosque, YOU NEVER Hear the question asked by the Reporter.

I bet you that the question asked was,

" President Obama, do you have an opinion on the Wisdom of the Building the Mosque ? "

Then afterward you just hear that abridged clip ....

Then the entire EchoChamber chamber chimed in; I'm sure some rightWing media something posed the leading question: " Is Obama trying to walk his opinion back ? "

I say this because the original online report was headline with a simple:
"Obama Says He Has No Opinion on the Wisdom of the ... Mosque"

No walking back
No controversy

Just a report on how he felt that it was a local NYC matter that a President should not way in on, at all.

My theory about Obama's birth certificate is that the long version shows his religion as that as his father's. Which is Muslim. Now that doesn't mean that Obama still practices as a muslim, or ever did. But that's my theory as to why he won't release his BC. I've never questioned his place of birth, just the religion that is listed on it. And on a side note, I'm assuming it even lists a religion because I'm about his age and mine does. But I don't know for sure.

no reason for him to release a "long copy" BC that never existed in Hawaii to begin with. The Hawaii State Government will provide you his BC that exists, just ask and pay.

It is not the President's job to endorse anything. It is his job to defend the Constitution. His opinion on Constitutional matters is irrelevant to it's defense and he is right to keep it to himself.
