Jennifer Aniston Says 'Retard' On 'Regis & Kelly' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/19/10 03:23 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:25 PM ET

Jennifer Aniston compared herself to a "retard" on 'Regis & Kelly' Thursday morning, as Hollywood Life pointed out.

"So you got to play dress up?" Regis asked of her Barbra Streisand-inspired shoot.

"Yeah, I got to play dress up," Jen said. "I do it for a living, like a retard."

Earlier this year, Sarah Palin called for Rahm Emanuel's firing after he called liberal groups opposed to health care reform "f**king retards." She defended Rush Limbaugh's use of the same phrase in the same context on the basis that it was "satire."

just recently discovered many persons when they are retiring say"retired-retarded" why?

Having a child with down syndrome it goes through me like a knife. It is a terrible way of describing anything!! My daughter happens to love Jennifer and the Friends show. She will never know what the woman has said. She sees an actress that she loves and doesn't pass judgement.
Yes, wouldn't it be great if the whole world could be so less judging. Unlike her mother she is quick to forgive.
Perhaps we should all read the article "If PEOPL E WITH DOWN SYNDROME RULED THE WORLD." It would be the best place around. You better believe it JENNIFER.

People need to lighten up a bit, and realized that the term has come to mean something different than its literal interpretation. Much like the once-reviled term "geek" no longer applies strictly to its sideshow monstrosity antecedent, or "dork" is no longer solely thought of as pertaining to the male genitalia. English is a thermoplastic -- not a thermosetting -- language; word meanings, AND THEIR USAGE, change over time. In the case of these three words, what was once cruel or crude has softened into something more affectionate, more humorous, and more useful.

Good grief, people. Just occasionally, don't you all get tired of mowing people down for saying the wrong thing? Maybe I'm just brain-tired at the moment, but some of the commentary on this page strikes me as absurd.

I support the spirit and intention behind political correctness, honestly I do. But often I find myself disagreeing with is execution. At what point does concern for the good treatment of others careen off into PC thuggery? Often, I think people go mining for insults, because there is nothing more potent that self-righteousness.

If she were a political figure I would think differently. But the woman is a mindless entertainer who just said the wrong thing - obviously to make a self-deprecating joke. Must we now march in the street and demand she apologizes? Perhaps boycott her movies? Should she visit Oprah and weep her contrition for the world to see before we forgive her? Honestly, don't you occasionally get tired of carrying on like this?

While I don't think she intended to insult anyone, I do think she needs to take responsbility for the comment. If she doesn't own up to it, she will just look bad for her, and she is already bombing.

No she's an entertainer. She's not a political figure. If she were, should could get out of trouble by claiming it was "satire" and therefore ok.

I'm a special education teacher, and the reason this really bothers me is that Aniston is implying that people with mental disabilities can't have real jobs, that they're pretty much stuck in childhood, playing pretend all day. This couldn't be further from the truth and I know that, if any of my students heard what she said, they'd be very hurt by it. To hear that someone thinks the only things you're good at are playing dress up can be very disheartening to a child or adult struggling with disabilities, and if enough people dismiss your abilities that way, you begin to believe them. I hope Aniston thinks harder about what she says in the future.

When did she imply that - she was doing an interview and adding humor - not a documentary on the future prospects of disabled people.

The hypocrisy here is surprising. The word retarded is, in fact, still largely a label for a group of people. It is not an inherently offensive term, but when people (like JA) use the word to insult themselves or others who are not mentally disabled, it perpetuates a cycle of oppression..and hurts. Words matter. Using a word meant only to describe a certain group of people as a derision is incredibly disrespectful.
This is along the same lines of using gay as a synonym for stupid, etc. Think golden rule.

Nonsense the MSM calls her names every day and then its all good. Secondly shes a COMEDIENNE - this is what they do - we've been through this already with the Miley Cyrus vs Jamie Foxx debate. Jamie had to explain what comedy meant

People can be funny without dumping on people with disabilities.

Chris Rock does self-depreciating humor often in the - why women sleep with him, and what they think when they see him as opposed to what they think when they see Denzel or Will. Very non-PC.

Once again proof positive on how trespasses are handled here in HufPo land. Let a conservative say something ignorant like this and all he!! breaks loose ... let a liberal potty mouth say it and it's "yawn." That's called hyprocisy folks ... though, you already know that.

Are we having a fit over this again? You have GOT to be kidding. Are-tards define the current political climate culminating with the Queen from Alaska.
