Clearly, Texas is controlled by un-American elements that are utterly insane -- even if what they're doing fits right in with the current truth-denying direction of American conservatism.
Somewhere along the line we're supposed to learn that the secret to happiness is adjusting our expectations to reality. Maturity means accepting that failing to get the gold or the Golda isn't the same thing as failure.
I lived there for over 17 years. On a mountainside, with forests and terraces. My nearby village had 500 inhabitants. My neighbors were sheep and shepherds. I lived under the Mediterranean sun, with groves of olives, and surrounded by the sea.
I had private health insurance ($100/mo which covered everything, including standard private hospital room), a train stop in the town that let me go from one end of the island to the other, buses which would take me to other small villages when I wanted to go. I had happiness and peace.
Woe, to me. I had to leave that and come back to America. I left a lot behind. And that is a pity, because Americans (could have afforded) the "luxuries" I took for granted. But corporations trumped people. And still seem to do.

I go to Mallorca regularly as I have a mate living on the island. That cove is called Cala Deià, great for swimming, though not for stretching out as you can see. There is one relatively unspoilt long sandy beach on the island called Es Trenc. Palma is a real gem, very beautiful, lovely little alleyways, great bars and restaurants.
Mallorca also has some wonderful historic little towns but you have to pay well to get a good location and good beds (something all of Mallorca seems to suffer from is small hard lousy beds). Much of Mallorca's coast has been ruined by development to cater for hordes of cheap boozy holiday makers from the UK and Europe since the 60s, but it's easy to avoid these spots.

Moderator: is there any way to copy the Cathedral photo & caption so that it can inform the blogs/comments re: Park51? Evidently some good folks think that only Moslems build over other religions' sanctified ground.

If you can deal with the drunken British and tourists good luck. However, the Spanish have become right winged themselves lately. Especially at Palma Majorca. My friend lives there with his wife (half Asian and Spanish-white) and he is African American. They've been having so much trouble lately. Kids have been spitting and beating up his kids and calling them monkeys and worst of all is that he is constantly being stopped and asked for his papers. I live in France and I can say it isn't much better. You might wanna rethink that move.

your friend is lucky he's not a "moro" (Arab)--often treated even worse than "negros"
i love spain but the racism is intense. when i lived there it was one of the most difficult things to deal with, some new friends you can't introduce to each other, because they already hate each other. entrenched racism in that culture... fueled by a lot of their own illegal immigration and unemployment issues.

I think we are entering a new "inquisition" period in all of the western world, it makes me sick. The htred of Mus-lim≠s in the US among the right wing is devastating to those of us who worked so hard after 911 to combat it.
