(RNS) By some accounts, the heated opposition to the so-called Ground Zero mosque has been drummed up by a telegenic blogger with a strong New York accent and even stronger opinions.

Pamela Geller, a Long Island native who writes the blog "Atlas Shrugs," said she was the "quintessential New York City career girl" before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Since then, she has co-founded groups dedicated to fighting the "Islamization" of America, sponsored anti-Muslim ads in several cities, and, more recently, become a near daily presence on television news programs.

Some even suggest that Geller deserves credit -- or blame -- for turning a local zoning decision about whether to build an Islamic cultural center and mosque blocks from Ground Zero into a national political spectacle.

"She's been instrumental," said Eric Boehlert, a senior fellow at Media Matters for America, a liberal watchdog group. "She has whipped up hatred in the right-wing blogosphere and now that's spilled out into the wider community."

Articles in The Washington Post and Salon.com this week have reported that the mainstream media picked up on angst about Park51, the planned cultural center and mosque in lower Manhattan, only after Geller began blogging about it. In recent weeks, Geller has become a chief spokeswoman against the project, appearing on ABC's "Good Morning America," CNN, NBC Nightly News, and Fox.

According to a recent Time magazine poll, 61 percent of Americans now oppose building Park51. Geller says the notion that she has single-handedly instigated the opposition is absurd.

"I think it's grossly unfair and condescending to the American people, as if they are lemmings and can't think and feel for themselves," she said in an interview. "I don't have that kind of influence."

Before she got into blogging and advocacy, Geller spent nearly a decade at the New York Daily News, starting as a financial analyst and making stops in the advertising and marketing departments. Later, Geller was associate publisher of The New York Observer for five years, she said.

Now, even Muslim groups reluctantly acknowledge Geller is front and center in the mosque debate. "People say don't give her too much credit, she's a fringe character," said Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations. "But she is a fringe character who every day is on CNN, Fox, The Washington Post, and The New York Times. She is the driving force behind the Islamic center campaign."

Some media experts doubt Geller's influence, though, and question why reporters have given her controversial views a platform. Postings on "Atlas Shrugs" have included a video suggesting Muslims have sex with goats, a doctored picture showing President Obama urinating on an American flag, and a fake image of new Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan in Nazi garb.

Geller has also accused Obama of anti-Semitism, said that he does the bidding of "Islamic overlords," and posted an essay suggesting that the president is the love child of Malcolm X.

Geller said not everything on her website should be taken seriously. She jokingly called CNN the "Crescent News Network," after it criticized her views, and her author photo shows Geller's head on Superman's body. "The blog is my living room, my kitchen, when I'm talking to my friends," Geller said.

Muslims, however, are not amused.

"I would say that she is the queen of the Muslim bashers," said Hooper. "I see her rise and the rise of these anti-Islam hate groups going hand in hand."

Diane Winston, an expert on religion and the media at the University of Southern California, said a perfect storm of circumstances has fueled opposition to Park51 -- but the media have settled for the simplistic narrative that one woman is behind it all.

"Pamela Geller is an attractive woman and she speaks simply and you can follow her and she gives good sound bites," Winston said. "She has definitely had an impact, but her perspective wouldn't be widely know if the mainstream media hadn't picked up on it."

Thirty years ago, before the advent of the Internet and cable news, it's doubtful the mainstream media would have given Geller any attention, Winston said. "Now, in its rush to be relevant and get an audience, the mainstream media basically whores itself out to the right wing."

Geller's groups, Stop the Islamization of America, and the Freedom Defense Initiative, have bought ads critical of Islam on public buses in New York, Miami, and San Francisco. After transit officials in Detroit refused to post the ads, Geller sued, and the litigation continues.

Geller says the ads, which carry messages like, "Fatwa on Your Head?" and "Leaving Islam?" are not intended to be anti-Muslim, but offer safe haven for people considering conversion. Geller would not say how many people have asked for the resources offered in the ads.

Geller's latest ad, which will run on buses and trains in New York, shows a plane about to crash into the World Trade Center and a rendering of the proposed Islamic cultural center.

"I have nothing against Muslims. I love people," she said. "But I am opposed to ideology that inspires violence."

Pamela Geller and Ann Coulter. Two mid-life rejects that are feverishly attempting to fashion a relevant position in history for themselves. It's sad and pathetic--why do these extremists continue to receive legitimate journalistic attention?

when the project was first proposed to the city, it was approved 29 to 1. this is before all the media hooplah surrounding it.
"The vote by the Lower Manhattan Community Board 1 was 29-to-1, with 10 abstentions. Although the vote was not binding, the meeting was contentious. Some of the speakers supporting the project were Muslims who lost family members in the attacks, and were booed by protesters."

months later, gellar started covering it on her hate speech blog and coined the term "ground zero megamosque" and slowly it became a 9/11 issue and in august it exploded into this worldwide controversty.

it just goes to show how one nutter has the ability to shock and awe people and turn them into a pitch-fork wielding mob.

It's funny, but the critics of Pam Geller are the ones bringing her to people's attention. I'd never heard of her until a few days ago when I read an article criticizing her and her website.

I also have to admit that I'd never heard of the "ground zero mosque" until Palin's "refudiate" gaffe. I think that one story being so blown up brought the "ground zero mosque" onto many people's radars.

Well this article actually has the answer to a question I posted in another thread:

Why are there so many attractive women with skewed world views out there, like Palin, Cordozza, Ingram, Bachmann, and Geller ?

I now believe the answer is that the media has a tendency to gravitate to physically pleasing women.
I still also think its natures way of compensating for the 'eccentric' views' of said women, so they can get a mate and feed themselves... but that is just me.

I love how every single one of the women say they have no hatred of a particular group but then immediately go on to explain why they think said group and everyone in it needs to go away or convert...

The two recent attacks on Muslims in NYC happened within 24 hours of the latest race riot at the Burlington Coat Factory. This is a direct result of the hate and ugliness deliberately stirred up by Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer. These are callous, irresponsible, hateful people. In a interview Robert Spencer was asked if he was being deliberately combative and provocative, Spencer chuckled. “Why not?†“It’s fun.†This is horrible. Nobody should stir up racism just because they think it is fun. People like this have something seriously wrong with their core values.

I've come to realize that there are probably more militant Muslims in our country than I had previously thought. But the fact that fear and hate are being preached on our shores in the guise of Islam makes it even more important to demonstrate how much "bigger" we, as a country, are than this radical movement. Opposing the "Mosque at ground zero" to deprive militants of a victory is a small-minded viewpoint. Most followers of Islam are not violent; this facillity will make peaceful Muslims feel more American. And wouldn't we rather the people with suspicious agendas gather there instead of some dark place where they can claim they're forced to hide from US fear and exclusion? Do we really think we can stop terrorism by stubborn resistance? How naive and short-sighted is that?.....This is an opportunity to show we're up to this challenge. I think I know what Jesus would do. And Niccolo Machiavelli would probably do the same thing....

I think it's going to be really hard to plot terror when one is swimming or exercising, or cooking or shopping or reading with a racially, religiously ethnically mixed bunch of other New Yorkers. A community center is a good thing. It promotes respect, it serves the community, it provides valuable facilities, it genders good will. If you still doubt that, think of your own Jewish Community Center or your own Y.

I don't doubt that plotting terror will be challenging during water aerobics. But let's face it: many opposing this issue aren't so sure about that. I see approval of the community center as a simple (and reasonable) affirmation of our freedom. But in trying to address specific unreasonable and fearful concerns, my post uses some language and ideas you may have misunderstood. But I think we're on the same page. And I'm not a nutcase. Really....I'm not.

When resentment and a lack of forgiveness grow within a person, hatred takes root and drives the individual's actions. This seems to be the case for Ms. Geller. I find that individual's like her provide good illustrations as to why it is important to not let anger and resentment fester in one's life.

No, they buy into PC easily. It's interesting that the tea party is labeled racist and violent...yet no one is willing to look at Islam and see that they have some serious problems relating to gays, women and Jews....yet no once will call them out, in fact they go out of their way to "honor" them.

Why is there no ability to look at the reality? Read the news around the world. Listen to some of the Imams as they are preaching in their mosques....there is plenty of proof, yet the tea party does nothing close, but they are considered worse. Funny, but naive.

And NO, not all Muslims follow these beliefs, but Sharia does.

As far as I know Muslims don't hold protests waving signs equating Obama with Hitler nor are they marching to DC with known racists to "reclaim the civil rights movement" as are the Tea Partiers as we speak. It is dishonest to compare the Tea Bags with what Muslims do foreign countries and then claim the Tea Bags are peaceful compared to Muslims in the US. We are not the naive ones.

Mrs.Korn -- You miss the point! By becoming what you protest-against, you lose your argument. It is not suggested that you become a Muslim nor that you practice Islam nor that you have to think it is a good or kind religion. it is only suggested that you do not become the same hateful person that you infer the Muslims might be.
