Albert Haynesworth Blasts Redskins After Preseason Loss

LANDOVER, Md. — Albert Haynesworth took his most defiant stand yet against Mike Shanahan on Saturday night, saying the Washington Redskins coach underplayed the two-time All-Pro's medical condition in recent days and that he intends to boycott next year's offseason conditioning program as well.

Speaking after the Redskins' 23-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Haynesworth also said that he shouldn't have been playing in the third quarter, when only backups were in the game.

Haynesworth stopped practicing early Tuesday at training camp and did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. Shanahan gave varying explanations for Haynesworth's idleness each day. The coach initially said Haynesworth "just was sick," then said the cause was dehydration, then finally said it was "more of a headache than anything else."

Haynesworth said he had something more, but he didn't specify what.

"You'll have to ask them, but I guess they'll tell you 'headaches' again," said Haynesworth, emphasizing the word by holding his fingers in the air to simulate quotation marks. "It was part of it, but it wasn't all of it. They left out a whole lot of stuff."

Why would the Redskins do that?

"I don't know. I guess make yourself look good, I don't know. Make me look bad for not going to their offseason conditioning program," Haynesworth said. "But, I mean, next year I'm not coming either. I'll be on my trainer again, and I'll get back in the same shape I'm in, and feel good about myself."

It was Haynesworth's boycott of the Redskins' offseason program that drew Shanahan's ire all spring. Haynesworth stayed away in part because he wanted to work with his own trainer, but also because he wanted a trade so he wouldn't have to play nose tackle in a 3-4 defense.

Because he didn't take part in the offseason work, Haynesworth was required by Shanahan to pass a conditioning test in order to practice at training camp. Haynesworth failed on his first attempts and didn't pass the test until the 10th day of camp.

Once he started practicing, Haynesworth was made to work with the second-stringers. He played with the backups in the first preseason game a week ago and again Saturday night, entering in the second half after all the starters had departed.

"Third quarter. I'm a ninth-year pro," Haynesworth said. "I don't think I should have been out there in the third quarter. But, for having 'headaches' again, that was what they wanted to do."

The Redskins said Shanahan will respond to Haynesworth's statements on Monday, when the team resumes practice. Addressing reporters before Haynesworth spoke, Shanahan reiterated his stance on Haynesworth's place on the team.

"He wasn't going to play with the first or second team for obvious reasons," Shanahan said. "He's going to have to earn his way to play with that group."

Sue him for breach of contract. Demand money to be repaid for failing to live up to the conditions of his deal.

That should make him listen a little more closely.

Haynesworth does like the D scheme they have in Washington now, Shanahan won't put up with this for long.

I'm with Haynesworth on this. $100 million is simply not enough to have to show some responsibility and commitment.

The Redskins paid $100 million for Cancer.
He is going to ruin that team's chemistry
09:48 PM on 08/23/2010
What chemistry?

The Skins, who have a pretty good legacy and traditions, might actually have worse chemistry than the Raiders.

Q: What do you call a no-class thug who has a $100 million contract to play professional sports?
A: A rich thug
Q: What do you call a rich thug after he has been placed on waivers or retired?
A: A thug without a future.

He got played in the 4th quarter of a pre-season game.

All he wants is to play defensive end. He's good enough to be a starter even with all this conditioning session and practice nonsense mucking the waters.

IT's not about that. The Redskins have had his attitude for almost a decade. Overpaid whiners who don't deliver. Shanahan is making an example of him and will cut him before the season starts.

This guy needs a lesson in humility, and I have a feeling before it's all over, Shanahan is going to teach him that lesson. I think he's cruisin to get traded or cut; but knowing Shanahan, he's gonna make Fat Albert suffer major humiliation, making his street value bupkus!

Haynesworth got played in the 4th quarter of a pre-season game. FIRST OF ALL, IS THAT ANYWAY TO TREAT SOMEONE WHO COULD START ON ANY TEAM HE WANTS???

SECOND OF ALL: He doesn't want to play nose tackle. I'm sure many players don't like playing a position at any given time in their professional careers, and complain, so this is not tabloid fodder.

He's a whiney spoiled brat. He is making millions upon millions to play a game. Apparently, he can't start for the Redskins, so I doubt he could start for many other teams. The article itself says he was so winded after a few snaps he had to come out.

I'm sure you don't watch football if you think many players with 100 million dollar contracts complain like this.

He worked with his own trainer, failed to pass a physical conditioning test, but wants to work with his own trainer again. He's playing with the ability of a second or third string player, but thinks he should be a starter. Something's not getting through to him.

foolish arrogance
11:31 AM on 08/23/2010
He plays like a starter, watch. Second, he could start on any team he wants. So don't put him in in the fourth quarter of a pre-season game.

He may be able to play for any team he wants except no other team seems to want him (at least not with his contract).
09:31 AM on 08/23/2010
Snyder, you really hit one out of the park with this signing. The guy is a system player, and will never be what he was in the Titans system.

I have to side with Haynesworth on this issue. Shanahan has no right to make this a public issue and embarrass this guy (He is a 9 year pro). Taking him a side, threatening to cut him, or fining him in private would have been a better solution. Now it's a pissing contest between the two.
10:24 AM on 08/23/2010
Shanahan has every right. if they're paying the fat arse a 100 mil they can expect him to come to camp and get his arse in shape.

Good thing you aren't the coach they'd walk all over you.

Bottom line is the guy wants to play but on his terms and it don't work that way until you reach folk hero status. And fat albert has a long way to go to get there. you

Mike Shanahan has undoubtedly heard Albert Haynesworth's claims that Shanahan minimized his health condition last week.

And so Shanahan has decided to minimize them some more, calling Haynesworth's bluff.

"One thing for sure that is clear to me is that Albert has gotten away in the past with playing without practicing,'' Shanahan told Thomas George of Fanhouse.com. "That will not happen under this regime. If he's going to play, he's going to practice, and that is the same with every player here. The days of him playing without practicing are over. And that, to me, says it all.''

It's over Albert
08:52 AM on 08/23/2010
What a crybaby. If I was making that kind of money I'd be at off-season conditioning camp with a smile on my face. Dude, you're getting paid millions to be a healthy adult and play a game. Grow up.
08:41 AM on 08/23/2010
Albert is about to talk his way off that team. Maybe that's what he's trying to do?

Ah well, what do I know. I'm still hoping the Rams can make a comeback, so I'm used to absolute failure. It's become very zen for me.
