Obama's Smear Fighter Pens Memo For Dems Facing Smears Of Their Own

First Posted: 8/23/10 07:11 PM ET Updated: 5/25/11 06:25 PM ET

Obama Smear

The chief operative behind then-candidate Barack Obama's attempt to combat the smears he faced on the campaign trail has penned a memo for Democratic candidates around the country, advising them how to deal with similar attacks as the election approaches.

Will Bunnett, who was a senior e-mail writer and producer on the Obama for America campaign and the overseer of the Fight the Smears microsite, advises Democrats in a "working-paper" memo to engage their detractors rather than sit idly by.

"The number one rule of smear fighting is don't let a bad narrative about your candidate settle in. Because the anxiety a smear creates leads people to seek information, you have a window to make sure some of what they receive counters the smear."

But Bunnett's counsel is more nuanced than just arguing for direct engagement. For example, he urges candidates not to give up "refuting the facts of the smear."

"When a smear risks catching on, work on beating back the fear underlying the smear (like the fear that John Kerry is less than who he says he is)... You're more likely to successfully update the 'story' someone has in their head of John Kerry by appealing to someone's gut with a more generic character defense or counterattack than by peppering them with facts about medals and commendations."

He also stressed that smear targets frame their push-back "in moral language."

"In the [Fight The Smears] context, that means it's not "rumors are going around that Barack is a Muslim." Instead it's "shameful, shadowy attackers have been lying about Barack's religion." That second version involves morality in the forms of shame, cowardice, and deception and uses active voice to give people more of a sense of an opponent."

Culled from experiences of the Obama and Kerry campaigns, the memo's content provides an interesting window into the Democratic psyche heading into the closing months of the 2010 election. Not only does the party remain incredibly wary of Republican campaign tactics, they seem cognizant that the Internet community that helped propel them to office in the past two cycles could now be the conduit for the rumor mongering that facilitates their downfall.

The pushback advice is heavy on political psychology and broad messaging tactics as opposed to individual instructions for smears to come. But that may be because the memo is anticipatory in nature and meant for broad usage for any candidate who wants it.

"It is certainly preemptive," said Larry Huynh, a colleague of Bunnett's at Trilogy Interactive who contributed to the memo. "The point is to get it out before because people need to understand how to deal with this in an effective way because we expect this to be a pretty dirty cycle."

It seems that Robert Gibbs missed that memo as he alienated the Professional Left, the Progressive base of the Democratic party. Is it that the Goldman Sachs White House is determined to continue on the path of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory as they have in Health Care Insurance "Reform" or Financial "reform" or ending the wars?

It's shameful to see such ignorance in print. To brand a black man as Hitler is soo over the top. Hitler murdered MILLIONS of innocent men, women, and children. He instituted faux scientific studies and thoughts suggesting that blacks and other non-white people were scientifically and otherwise inferior. He used his belief of racial superiority as justification for his crimes against God and humanity. Please stop it with these posters and characterizations!! Stop giving these people a platform to spred their ignorance and hate!!! The smart and decent people are being drowned out by this non-sense. God is watching!!! God have mercy on the souls of these haters. But I would understand it if God just turned away.

But you'd also have to get Dems to step forward and speak in their defense. There's the rub. They are all busy digging hideeholes to crawl into.

AMEN! This is my one gripe with Obama and many Dems, they allow the Republican hate and slander machine control the media message. They don't hit back. I understand, as a dark skinned American - dare I say black, why Obama walks the tight rope. Heaven forbid he gives ammunition to the "angry black man in office" narrative portrayed by Rush and Beck; but at the same time his intellectual approach goes over many American's heads, and I argue rather stand "idly by" you need to confront GOP misinformation and talking points head on. This goes for the lies told about immigrants in Arizona to scare up support for the immigration bill (SB 1070), the death panel "kill granny" insanity, the Obama muslum/birther garbage, the twisting of the Bush tax cuts into Obama tax hikes, the mosque near ground zero, the list goes on and on and on...

I thought when Obama said he was ready to kick some BP buttocks it was a turning point; unfortunately my beloved president and the democrats in office still apparently lack the chutzpah to get the job done and combat GOP lies as they should.
05:21 PM on 08/24/2010
I think one of the biggest problems facing the Dems is that they allow themselves to always be on the defense (even with really stupid stuff that doesn't merit anything but a laugh, and an "are you serious?"). You are right that "they don't hit back." But Democrats are generally consensus builders and they are by nature, willing to compromise for the greater good. They just can't help themselves, which is why so many of us love being Democrats. However, for the better good, it is time they learn how to go on the offense, and stop being so soft.

"...push-back "in moral language." " It's virtually impossible to shame the shameless. When the Republicans, who have always played it nasty, have an attitude of "kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down, along with "winner takes all, but prisoners," what are we going to do? The right-wingers create and then frame their latest lie, crafted to be picked by the "media." By the time the moral outrage of the Left rises, a new lie is cast and propagated by the "media" Being always on the defensive and taking the high road will get you clobbered. You'll feel like a decent person, but you'll be a battered decent person. It's time to get tough, I'm curious about what others think we should do.

When it comes to lies, rumors and innuendo, a research is adequate to then post to any of the three.
If it is a private blog, however, then options become more limited.
Censorship isn't really a valid tactic as it breaks laws and produces a feeling of sympathy towards the poor right wingers.

Here's the thing.
We can't stop hatred.
But, in a public forum we can offer truth, or at least a different perspective to a view.
Huffington Post is a fairly good place to practice this concept, although some detractors are immensely involved with changing our minds.
(Will Roger's line was, "You can always tell a man who only reads one paper" )

Well, "truth"...that's a bit of a sticky wicket, but a worthwhile cause, none-the-less. If someone says Reagan was a hero, for example, I bring up his aiding bin laden, Iraq/Iran conflict, Sandinista s and rebel warfare...the gouging of the deficit, the European anger he single handedly wrought to our shores by those once considered friends and allies.
Geez...I was just using Reagan's hero worshipers as an example, and yet, the truth would fill this comment box.
but then, that's me.

Too many words, sometimes.
I don't think it's correct to alter a person's vote so much as present the truth (as close as we can) and then be happy with our work.

If you read George Lakoff, What Conservatives Know that Liberals Don't, this is exactly what he has been saying. We haven't understood the moral underpinnings of these smears and attacked them back with a moral message of our own. We often are too convoluted and don't come back with a simple message to counter - we go on and on. For example, with Kerry, we should have had a very simple phrase, like "John Kerry is a war hero. He fights for working people." And then go into the details, always. I've been thinking that the answer to this foolishness about Obama's religion is something like, "Obama is a Christian. Why are the Republicans pretending he's a Muslim? And is there something wrong with being a Muslim?" Then, on the shows the Dems say that over and over, like the Republicans keep repeating their lies. Is there something wrong with being a Muslim? Why are you pretending he's a Muslim? We need to develop and use catch phrases as well as they do.

Will Bunnett and his colleagues are right on.

Political candidates need to be ready to reply to dangerous charges with humor. Keep using the new word BIRTHER, for example, to get people laughing about how crazy the "Obama not born in America idea" really is. When we laugh enough we will also decide that those who use such charges are not fit for public office.

Second that the poster is offensive...
now about the gorilla tactics being used this very volatile election season is pretty much how democrats and republicans have lowered themselves to. Such a shame that elections are no longer about a candidates experience. Voting for candidates used to be a great privilege because there were actually candidates who people could take pride in voting for. Unfortunately now the process is just "I guess I have to" to vote for somebody.

with that said...let the smear campaigns season begin..
12:07 PM on 08/24/2010
As for the poster. It is inaccurate to portray Obama as a NATIONAL socialist as he is clearly an international socialist bent on transforming the US using international socialism as what Marx prescribed as the transition stage from capitalism to communism. Obama's wealth redistribution is not a domestic program, it includes government seizure of US wealth for shipment off-shore.

I agree it is a shame the electorate devalued experience in the 2008 Presidential election. Obama proved it is possible to ascend to the Presidency with no relevant experience. I trust the electorate will begin correcting that error this November.
