Woman Dumps Cat In Trash (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/24/10 05:11 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:25 PM ET

LONDON (AP) - The gray-haired woman gently pets the cat, occasionally glancing furtively at a garbage bin. Then she strikes, casually grabbing it by the scruff, tossing it in, popping the lid closed, and quickly strolling away. (Scroll down for video)

The surveillance video posted online by Lola the cat's owners takes only seconds, but it has outraged thousands of viewers around the world, some of whom posted angry messages pledging retribution. Now, police say they've identified the woman and posted guards outside her house in central England.

Investigators at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which prosecutes cruelty cases, said Tuesday that the gray striped cat was trapped for 15 hours before being rescued on Sunday morning by her owners, who told a British newspaper they heard Lola's muffled cries from inside the bin. The distressed cat was unharmed.

The society said it planned to interview the woman involved after it confirmed her identity, but declined to say whether she had been identified by a viewer of the clip online.

Police in the city of Coventry urged local residents to show restraint.

"Coventry Police are supporting the society's investigation and would urge the public to leave the matter to be dealt with in the appropriate manner by the authorities," the West Midlands police department said in a statement.

Lola's owner Stephanie Mann said she and husband Darryl couldn't find Lola on Sunday morning but followed the sound of her meows.

"We thought she might be trapped under the car because she sounded like she was hurt, so we followed her cries and eventually found her in the bin," she told the Coventry Telegraph newspaper.

The couple had previously installed a personal surveillance camera outside their home following a spate of thefts in the area.

Mann said they checked the video tape expecting to discover local youths, or a drunk, had thrown Lola into the bin late on Saturday evening, but were shocked to discover the culprit was a respectable looking woman.

"I was absolutely heartbroken to see how someone could just be so cruel," she told the newspaper. "I don't know what went through her head but it was just disgusting to watch and it broke my 8-year-old daughter's heart."

Mann later posted the clip online, where it has attracted tens of thousands of views.

Coventry police department said a small number of community support officers -- wardens who assist the police but have no powers of arrest -- had been stationed near the woman's home after a crowd gathered outside.

Wow, who would expect that a "respectable-looking" person would do such a thing?

Keep your hair looking "nice", wear "nice clothes", and you'll get away with anything until a surveillance camera catches you red handed (or until your 30-year
ponzi scheme finally catches up with you).

RRRETCH....

This woman should be charged and do jail time. She also should be fired from her job. Does anyone know which bank she works for?

Outrage is the only way to describe how we are feeling right now about this woman. She has the nerve to pick on a beautiful animal. It is a disgusting display from a absolutely disgusting woman. Just to look at her and the way that she is unkept shows how she is miserable in her own life and needs to lash out against a defensless animal. Lady...I use that term so lightly the law to be handed to you in a swift and hard manner. remember that God is watching and see's your dispicable actions and will be held accountable. Live your miserable life and leave beautiful precious animals alone. A great repayment? Is to to see you lose everything..if you have anything. (By the looks of it, it doesnt seem as thou you have much!) to have you thrown in a garbage can for 15 HOURS! That wouldn't even be enough ! You are a cruel person with a bitter devilish heart! This and you will never be forgotten for this cruel cruel behavior. You are a shell of a woman !

As Czech novelist Milan Kundera once wrote: “Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it.”

If she has children, the child welfare authorities should be investigating. What a creepy woman.

'A Safe Cat is a Happy Cat': The Myth of The Outdoor Cat - The Good News is that Cats DON'T need to wander to lead fulfilling lives. The bad news is that many cat caregivers believe the opposite. Free-roaming cats get a dangerous tradeoff: freedom to roam in exchange for the vastly increased likelihood of a premature, painful death. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that the average lifespan of a free-roaming cat is about three years, compared to 12–18 years for the average indoor-only cat. Even cats in “safe” suburban neighborhoods can meet untimely fates and never return home.

Safely confined cats avoid these hazards:

CRUEL PEOPLE. Shelters see cats burned, poisoned, tortured by disturbed children and adults.

TRAFFIC. Collisions with cars and other vehicles are common killers. Myth: Cats are “streetwise” about cars.

DISEASES. Rabies and other diseases that can be transmitted to humans are a serious public health concern. As many as 15% of sick cats are infected with feline leukemia or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), many have both.

POISONS. Poisons exist on treated lawns, in bait left out to kill rats or mice, and in auto antifreeze, which has an appealing taste for cats and dogs.

OTHER ANIMALS. Cats, dogs, wild predators such as coyotes, raccoons, and foxes are potential enemies of cats and often engage in fights that leave cats injured or dead.

That's the USA where people also declaw their cats for the OWNERS benefit.

I'm in the USA and my cats are not declawed and they're indoor-only. Most people I know with cats have indoor-only cats with claws fully intact. It may depend on the region, but where I live (Boulder, CO) it's viewed as a cruel and unnecessary practice.

I wouldn't want my cats outside due to foxes, coyotes, birds of prey and the occasional mountain lion. Which are all known to prey on cats. Not to mention- it's just plain rude to force your cat on your neighbors.

Oh, she’s a BANKER. Well, that’s not so surprising, then. They take a certain pleasure in tossing human beings into the dust bin, as well.

Why was the cat loose on a busy roadway? Should the owners not share some of the liability?
07:33 PM on 08/25/2010
No.

Owners bear no liability for a sociopath or her behavior.
05:16 PM on 08/25/2010
Some people have less humanity than animals. You'd think someone would feel bad about hurting a defenseless animal, but this lady obviously lacks a conscience. This was the act of a sociopath and this woman should be charged with a crime.

What's interesting is that more people will respond and comment about cruelty to animals than cruelty to other human beings. People love their pets and spend billions a year on the care of those pets. Many people will even have pet portraits commissioned, so that they will always remember their pets. This is an example of the value people place on their pets: http://www.bossik.com/#Pet_Portraits Some people even place the same value on a pet as they would a child. Pets strike up emotions in human beings that cannot be ignored.

She did this in England--LOL NOT a good idea. In Great Britain they love cute animals quite a bit more than children, to judge from the newspapers and TV. Cute animal story always headlines. They are very sentimental about kitties, puppies, and duckies. This woman's life is going to be difficult for a long long time. I won't be surprised to find out that someone has taken some kind of retribution entirely out of proportion to the "crime"--like the people here demanding that she be sentenced to life in prison--I mean come on, really.
