Ahmed Sharif, Stabbed Cab Driver, Meets With Bloomberg

NEW YORK — A Muslim cab driver whose face and throat were slashed in a suspected hate crime attack appeared with Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Thursday as city officials sought to ease tensions in the debate over a plan to put a mosque near the site of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Meanwhile, investigators sought to unravel contradictions in the life of the suspect, a baby-faced college student who had traveled to Afghanistan with a group that seeks to promote interfaith understanding.

The Bangladeshi driver, Ahmed H. Sharif, said the proposed mosque and Islamic center north of the World Trade Center site did not come up in his conversation with the passenger accused of using a folding knife to slash his neck and face after asking whether he's a Muslim.

"Of course it was for my religion. He attacked me after he knew I was a Muslim," Sharif said at a news conference at City Hall.

Bloomberg said it is impossible to know the motive of the attack. But he made a pointed connection to the debate about the planned Islamic center, which has ignited intense emotions worldwide.

"This should never have happened and hopefully won't happen again," Bloomberg said. "Hopefully, people will understand that we can have a discourse. That's what the First Amendment is all about. That's what America is all about."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said authorities did not believe the cabbie's attack signified any trend in anti-Muslim crimes.

"We see it as an isolated incident," he said.

Passenger Michael Enright, of Brewster, N.Y., remained jailed without bail on charges of attempted murder and assault as hate crimes and weapons possession.

Sharif and one of his advocates at City Hall, the leader of a taxi drivers' labor group, said the conversation in the taxi turned from pleasant to disturbing as Enright began to make jokes about Ramadan.

Investigators were still trying to make sense of what they know about the 21-year-old visual arts student who once volunteered with a group called Intersections that promotes interfaith tolerance and has supported a proposal for the downtown mosque.

Robert Chase, Intersections' director, said the organization had helped pay to send Enright overseas to Afghanistan in April, a trip he took as part of a senior video project he was doing at the School of Visual Arts. As part of the work, Enright spent time embedded with U.S. troops.

Chase said Enright did not appear tormented or different when he returned from Afghanistan, but said "we knew he was witness to some really awful things over there."

"We could tell that he'd had an intense experience, but he was the same Mike we knew," Chase said. "He's always been professional, always been courteous, always been diligent."

Authorities say Enright uttered "Assalamu aleikum," Arabic for "Peace be upon you," and told the driver, "Consider this a checkpoint," before attacking him Tuesday night inside the yellow cab in Manhattan.

Enright was carrying two notebooks that contained details of his experiences in Afghanistan but did not appear to contain any anti-Muslim rants. The journals were in a backpack along with an empty bottle of scotch, Kelly said.

Enright told police he had been drinking since 2 p.m. Tuesday before his 6 p.m. arrest. He accused the arresting officers of violating his constitutional rights and falsely claimed to be Jewish, Kelly said.

Enright's attorney said at a court appearance Wednesday that Enright was an honors student, lived with his parents in the New York City suburbs and had volunteered in Afghanistan.

Sharif praised New York as a city where "all color, races, all religion," live "side by side peacefully." But he said the attack had made him feel unsafe and lonely. He said meeting with Bloomberg helped him feel more secure, and he welcomed the support from the city.

Supporters of the mosque – a group that includes Bloomberg – say it's a matter of religious freedom. Opponents argue that the site is too close to the place where Islamic terrorists attacked the World Trade Center site nine years ago.

Muslims have been worshipping at the Islamic center site since last year, but it received new attention after developers sought to move ahead on a planned expansion that includes a community center.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Washington-based advocacy group, said anti-Islam sentiment has bubbled up with new fervor during the debate about the mosque, leading to more bias incidents nationwide.

In addition to the cab driver stabbing, a mosque in Madera, Calif., was vandalized, and anti-Muslim graffiti was discovered in the parking lot of a Texas Islamic center, the group said.

"Hate rhetoric often leads to hate crimes, and I think that's what we're seeing now," spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said.

Including the attack on Sharif, there have been 10 hate crimes reported against Muslims in the city so far this year, up from six total last year, Kelly said. By comparison, the top hate-crime categories this year are 93 anti-Semitic, 36 anti-gay and 23 anti-black incidents, according to the NYPD.

The anti-Muslim total is so low, "I don't think you can draw any conclusions from these numbers," Kelly said.

The Anti-Defamation League said it had been tracking "an intensified level of anti-Muslim bigotry" in public forums over the past few months.

It cited scores of incidents involving either harassment, hate speech or outright violence, including a pipe bomb explosion at an Islamic center in Jacksonville, Fla., in May and a July fire at an Islamic center in Mareitta, Ga.

"The mood in the country, in general, is one of lack of civility and anger and rage," said ADL director Abraham Foxman. "When you raise the rhetoric on hate, there is always potential for violence."

The ADL itself opposes the construction of an Islamic community center near ground zero at the World Trade Center site, saying the location would unnecessarily agitate some 9/11 victims and families and would be "counterproductive to the healing process."

SILENCE = DEATH. HATE SPEECH = HATE ACTION. IT IS TIME to hold those who rhetoric inspires hate responsible for the hate action that follows. It is time for an amendment to the constitution that holds responsible the words people say if they indeed result in crimes by others. I am tired of this crap, whether it is Muslim haters or gay haters or women haters...all of this must come to an immediate grinding stop.

Regarding my post a few comments below: I've seen a video of Sharif, and it's clear the wounds are real. (They DON'T look real in the picture on this page; my mistake.)

But my other points remain.

The dismissal of presumption of innocence — with the staid New York Times running the headline “Rider Asks if Cabby Is Muslim, Then Stabs Him,” as if they KNOW the kid did what Sharif said — is a textbook example of media railroading.

Some ask, “What else could have happened?”

The possibilities are endless.

Example: the police said Enright was staggering drunk, with an empty liquor bottle in his pack, but Sharif insists Enright was sober. Why?

Did Sharif pick up Enright BECAUSE he was staggering drunk, planning to roll him; the kid fought back; and that's how Sharif got cut? Then Sharif makes up the hate crime tale for obvious reasons, and it suits the media and Bloomberg?

Just one of many possibilities. The point is: why the rush to conviction, prior to investigation? Why does the media ask NO questions about obviously suspicious circumstances -- such as the claim that an overweight, drunk guy, throwing himself head first from a moving cab, wearing polo shirt and shorts, gets no injuries, has untorn clothes, an unbroken liquor bottle in his backpack and unbroken glasses?

Presumption of guilt equals railroading. It's shocking that some here equate presumption of innocence with support for hate crimes.

Enright's behaviour should be denounced. However, can't people see that Enright is only a modest vehicle for Chistian belief - like all the other thousands of murderers and molesters in the United States? The United States is, after all, a Christian society! Not only must Christianity be held accountable for Enright's behaviour, it should be held accountable for the behaviours of the thousands of other US citizens who kill and maim: the behaviours simply articulate a devotion to Christianity - in the same way as Islamic beliefs are to be held accountable for 9-11 and the murders committed in its name! So, how can we consistently allow for churches? They should all be dismantled, and no further religious "houses" whatsoever should be permitted to be built - or, to compromise, none should be permitted to be built within a 2-block radius of a murder committed by a religious devotee.

The media line -- that the only mystery is WHY Enright attacked -- demonstrates a political agenda, since the only reason for believing the driver's account is unsupported trust.

The story smells absurd.

Examples:

* The difficulty of knifing the driver of a moving cab through the partition opening -- if it had one. (No media reports show a picture of the cab. Some don't have a decent sized partition opening.)

* To fight off his attacker the driver would have to turn around, leaving the cab moving uncontrolled in New York rush hour traffic, which is a madhouse.

* In the picture taken in court the next day, the kid has no blood on his shirt despite supposedly knifing Sharif's neck and struggling with him.

* The driver says he defeated the attack. But how? If he got the knife away from Enright, where's the knife? if he didn't, why isn't he dead?

* The driver claimed the kid threw himself out the window of the fast moving cab when the driver was rushing to the police station, having locked the doors. Meaning the cab had electrical door/window controls, operable from the front. So why didn't he lock the windows?

* If the kid jumped from a fast moving cab why are his face and shirt unscathed in the court picture?

* And I just noticed: IN THE PICTURE ILLUSTRATING THIS ARTICLE, SHARIF'S FACE IS UNSCATHED AND UNBANDAGED, WITH NO BANDAGE ON HIS NECK!

* The difficulty of knifing the driver through the partition opening is probably why he's still alive.

* If you've ever been in a NYC cab in rush hour, you know that it spends a lot of time not moving.

Enright needs to be locked up for good. His actions should not be excusable nor should there be articles of how "good of a person" he was before his act. I don't know why the media is trying to make it seem like he was good person...anyone that commits such an act should be punished to the fullest!

regarding the mosque issue, Sharif "was against it, that there was no need to put it there." be the reason that set Enright off? I'm sure liberals are having a field day trying to figure there story line around that. Enright's (who supported the building of the mosques) action shows the extreme of how far people go to create problems in this country.

One thing that needs to be done is Bloomberg and the left leaning media should apologize to the people who oppose the mosque for calling them violent. This act was commented by a supporter of the mosque and those facts should be reported correctly.

Although the RWNJs of this country are forever leaping to conclusions (e.g., Van Jones, Shirley Sherrod, etc.), let us strive not to emulate them. A college kid with no known criminal record from a middle-class background, a volunteer with an interfaith organization, suddenly and violently attacks a cab driver. So far, that is all we know about the case. That, and the fact that the kid's classmates have, apparently, spoken to the press and revealed that he had a serious drinking problem.

In order to combat crime, we study *why* people commit crimes. Most crimes are economic, crimes of opportunity, and are usually attributable to dysfunctional family circumstances combined with mental illness (according to a recent Science News article, this combination is the best predictor of future criminality). There is just no reason for this young man to commit this crime. Therefore, either there is something seriously wrong with his mental health, or he has a motive that is, so far, unknown to us. Let us wait for the details.

I wonder how many opposers knows this: "Muslims have been worshipping at the Islamic center site since last year, but it received new attention after developers sought to move ahead on a planned expansion that includes a community center."

If they do know, then it's the community part they have an issue with, not the actual worship part. Which as usual makes no sense.

Muslims are not going to be able to find safety anywhere, not in their home country or the United States.

On first reading, I couldn't quite understand your comment. However, my lack of understanding was effected by my specious assumption: the United States is the "home country" of millions of muslims. Thanks for the correction!

Obviously, Mr. Enright is a disturbed person. Anyone who startsdrinking at 2 p.m. in the afternoon and is so drunk four hourslater that he's lost his inhibitions and starts acting out hisracially-based hate is disturbed enough to be a menace to societyand should be locked up for a while, hopefully in a place where hismental health issues can be addressed. That said, my sympathy isfor Ahmed Sharif, a victim who apparently did nothing to provokehis attack. At this point, it's hard to say what motivated Mr.Epstein --- it's tempting to believe that his life experience, which included work in Afghanistan that deeply affected him. Butprobably the surrounding verbal violence and politicking around theproposed the Islamic Cultural Center may be a factor. In any case,Mr. Sharif seems to have been in the wrong cab at the wrong timewith the wrong passenger. I imagine the writing crews for one ofthe "Law & Order" franchises already has the first draft of thescript based on this incident written for next season.

I rarely agree with Bloomberg, but he's 100% right on the Islamic Center.

Still I think it sends the wrong message when the mayor meets with the victim of this attack and ignores other NYers who've been victimized by violent bigots. The mayor hasn't met with any other victims of bias crimes (that I'm aware of). He should either meet with all of them or none of them.
11:52 AM on 08/27/2010
In this case because tensions are so high between the haters and the Muslim community, it was appropriate for Mayor Bloomberg to meet with this victim to hopefully top other haters from attacking Muslims.

Hate crimes against Muslims are less common than hate crimes against jews, black men, gays and Latinos. There is increasing tension among the black and Latino communities.

The mayor and the media ignore this. He's making a mistake.

here's how you know that guys was fresh off the boat:

YOU NEVER TELL A W PERSON YOU'RE A MUSLIM IF THEY ASK OUT OF THE BLUE. even if the guy looks like your run of the mill tech geek. (in AZ it's "immigrant")

answering a question with a question will usually get you into a conversation which may or may not save you some trouble. dependent upon whether or not they like your accent.

this is just one of the simple rules you learn in this country if you are part of an "ethnic" minority. out of plain courtesy, or self preservation steer clear b/c you never know who's been listening to rush and has also gone off their meds that day, and avoid those pesky yes/no questions if you can. this poor dude didn't know to get out of the way, and it almost cost him his life.

you think they ask those types of questions for fun?
of course not all W people are like this, that would be generalizing. but this is definitely a case of one bad apple spoiling the whole bunch. it's hard to tell who is going to be violent these days. you can't profile the whole bunch but questions like: "are you muslim?" are a dead giveaway.

I *almost* want to agree, but NO ONE should be afraid to answer a question about who they are. Daniel Pearlman didn't lie about being a Jew, even though he knew he was signing his own death sentence. Mr. Sharif I'm sure knew that in this current environment answering the question truthfully would cause a scene of some sort, although I doubt he thought that this would be the outcome.

Both of them are brave men who deserve much better than being told "You should have known better".

Ok, right after you go over to an islamic country and try it there first. Both sides of the discussion need to be willing to tolerate the others belief system and culture and NOT threaten to kill them if they don't convert to the others belief in their fairy tale. The big problem most Americans have is that Moslems refuse to get into the melting pot.

This is not an issue between the US and any other country. This is an issue of one American attacking another American. And what do you mean be refusing to get into the melting pot? He's living in NYC, speaking English, and driving a cab, not living in a secret muslim camp in the hills. Does he have to convert to Christianity before you'll consider him American? Any particular denomination? Maybe if he had a "real American" job like flipping burgers? Should he bleach his skin for you?

Perhaps you need to be reminded that the majority of Muslims in this country are Black Americans or American citizens born in the USA. This IS their country. Just as much as it is yours.
