Seeking out sun, surf, and sand is an easy enough task, but is it possible to stir seclusion into the mix, too? ShermansTravel.com editors say "shore"! They've dug deep into their arsenal of secret sands to present their top picks for secluded U.S. beaches, where quiet coasts invite in-the-know sunbathers to savor their relative solitude. You'll just have to plan a visit soon - while these semi-private sands remain undiscovered for the moment, the cat's officially out of the bag. Bowman Beach, Florida

The secret's out about the beauty of Sanibel Island’s linen-white sand beaches – situated about 25 miles southwest of Fort Myers, Florida – so you won’t be alone in searching for a stretch of a secluded U.S. beach to call your own. But that’s just what you’ll get when you leave your car and make the quarter-mile walk to Bowman’s Beach, Sanibel’s most peaceful place. The island is well-known as one of the best shelling spots in the country, but you’ll find little competition here. There’s minimal development and ditto on amenities – though Bowman’s does have one perk not found on any other beach on Sanibel: barbecue grills.

If you folks decide to come to Maui please do NOT buy the book "Maui Revealed".

At least 2 people have diied following its directions.
It has you trespassing over people's property -- and they are so fed up that you might be met with a shotgun
It tells you to go to places that are very, very dangerous - life-threateningly so
The person who wrote this, wanted to make big bucks but is universally haated here on Maui

If are in the Ft. Myers area and looking at Bowman Beach and Sanibel, it is worth taking a trip to Cayo Costa State Park, it is available only via boat, from Pine Island but it is nice. Low population, good shelling, it is nice. You can even camp over night if you would like

Just a thought - I think there are probably few or no photos of the really secluded beaches.

Re: Sandbridge Beach. I thought 15 miles south of VA Beach puts you in North Carolina. Must be right on the border.

sandbridge is in vb, but it's 15 miles from the resort area. their details are a bit misleading, ha its also not secluded. just crowded with locals who are avoiding tourists.

Popham Beach State Park is also a great secluded beach. You can walk out to the rocky islands at low tide, and there are great shells there also. Just watch the tide or you may get stranded - it comes in very fast.

I am glad to not see any of the beaches on Lake Michigan or Lake Superior even though I'd rate many of them among the finest in the Western Hemisphere, and yes, I've been to some of the ones on this list. Fine, we'll keep them to ourselves.

Where's green sand beach, Hawaii? That was incredibly secluded... had to walk over 2 miles across lava fields and climb down a cliff to get to it. The green is from the semiprecious gem Peridot within the lava there (also called olivine).

You missed all the beautiful, mostly secluded, beaches that outline the gorgeous island of Puerto Rico!

Hey HP, you do know that Puerto Rico is part of the United States!

We stumbled on a lovely, unpopulated beach last weekend at Peribonia, Romania. Barrier arm that remided me a lot of N.C.'s outer banks before the tourists discovered them

If you have one near you and provided you can walk, bike or drive to one of those on the list, the last free place of total solitude left on earth.

Well, I guess it is not really free if you have to drive when you factor in gas and parking. But you still get the solitude.

I would add the beaches located North of La Push, WA on the Olympic Peninsula.
Breathtaking Vistas and Solitude on the Pacific Ocean.
